In a November 2024 interview at electronica in Munich, NXP Semiconductors CTO Lars Reger connected three shifts shaping the automotive industry: continued vehicle electrification, the move toward software-defined vehicles (SDVs), and more capable AI at the edge. He also described a future populated by many small intelligent robots and warned that localizing electronics supply chains carries costs in a globally interdependent industry.

Are EV sales slowing permanently?

No conclusion that electrification has ended follows from a slowdown in EV sales. The EE Times interview reported slower sales over the preceding year in most regions, with China as the exception, while presenting electrification as a continuing trend. It gave no sales totals, forecast percentages or market-size figures, so the interview supports a directional account, not a numerical forecast. EE Times’ November 13, 2024 interview with Reger also reproduced Infineon CEO Jochen Hanebeck’s statement: “The trend towards electrically driven vehicles is unbroken.” Infineon’s 2024 statement expresses that company’s view; it is not itself proof that sales are rising in every market.

What is a software-defined vehicle?

A software-defined vehicle (SDV) is one in which software plays a central role in vehicle functions and how they evolve. Reger’s interview frames the work ahead around scalable platforms and improved hardware-and-software architectures that can lower barriers to development. In practical terms, that points to building reusable foundations for vehicle software rather than treating every function as an isolated, fixed feature. The interview does not specify a reference architecture, software version, development procedure or performance benchmark, so it should not be read as a technical blueprint. EE Times’ interview describes the direction, not a particular implementation.

How could cars use edge AI?

Edge intelligence means processing information near where it is generated—in a vehicle, for example—rather than relying entirely on a remote cloud service. Reger discussed edge intelligence alongside power-efficient AI as an enabling direction for future automotive systems. That makes local computing relevant to the SDV conversation: vehicle platforms need architectures that can support software and intelligent functions within the car as well as connections beyond it. The interview does not identify specific AI tasks, chips, vehicle deployments or measured benefits, so it does not establish how a particular car will use edge AI or how much faster or more efficient it would be.

Why discuss robots alongside cars?

Reger’s reference to “lots of little intelligent robots” is an industry vision, not an announcement of a named machine or product. The connection to automotive technology is the emphasis on edge intelligence and power-efficient AI: both vehicles and robots are potential settings for intelligent systems that operate close to the physical world. The interview names no robot model, kit, price or deployment, and it does not describe a consumer product readers can buy. The interview’s robotics discussion is about a broad technological direction.

What does geopolitics mean for the electronics supply chain?

The interview closes on geopolitics and the globally connected electronics design and manufacturing chain. Reger emphasized that localizing production and design—summed up as “local for local”—has costs in a system built on interdependence. That is a trade-off, not a claim that localization is impossible or never desirable: the source offers no cost figures or country-by-country comparison. Its point is that supply-chain decisions involve more than choosing a location; efforts to make each region self-contained must contend with the global nature of electronics production. EE Times’ report does not quantify those costs.

DIY Robot Car Soldering Kit, ICSTATION Robot Kit Soldering Project with Time & Expressions Display STEM Science Experiment Robotics Car Kit for Back to School Education Students Adults Ages 15+
  • 5 Dynamic Expressions: ICSTATION’s intelligent robot is equipped with 5 built-in dynamic facial expressions, designed to enhance its interactivity and personality. By default, these expressions cycle automatically on the robot’s LCD screen, creating a dynamic and engaging visual presence. Users also have full control over the display—allowing them to select a single expression or multiple expressions to better suit specific environments, moods, or application scenarios
  • Time Display: In addition to showcasing 5 dynamic facial expressions, the multifunctional robot is also capable of displaying real-time clock information once it is successfully connected to the internet. By default, the system displays Pacific Standard Time (PST), but users can easily adjust the time settings to match their local time zone. This feature enhances the robot’s practicality, making it not just expressive, but also useful in daily environments
  • 2 Control Modes: The ICSTATION smart robot offers dual control options for maximum convenience. It can be operated using a traditional remote control or through WiFi connectivity. As long as your smartphone is connected to a WiFi network or hotspot, you can easily control the robot via your phone. This flexibility allows users to switch seamlessly between manual remote operation and smartphone-based control, catering to a wide range of users from beginners to robotics enthusiasts
  • Active Arms: To enhance its entertainment value, we’ve equipped the robotic car with two "little arms" on either side. These arms can be controlled to adjust their angles using a remote controller or a smartphone.
