For a Land Rover Freelander TD4, the Haynes Freelander workshop manual is the clearest DIY repair-book match: its coverage explicitly includes the 2.0L TD4 (1951cc) in Freelander models from 1997 through October 2006. That is Freelander 1 coverage, not Freelander 2. Identify your vehicle’s generation and model year before using any manual, then check the edition and engine or transmission variant against the vehicle.
Does the Haynes Freelander manual cover the TD4?
Yes. Haynes lists its Freelander manual for vehicles from 1997 through October 2006 and specifically names the 2.0L TD4 (1951cc). The listing describes a printed DIY repair manual with step-by-step procedures, fault-finding information and wiring diagrams. Its contents extend beyond the engine to cover such systems as diesel fuel and exhaust, preheating, cooling and heating, clutch, manual and automatic transmission, intermediate reduction drive unit, driveshafts, brakes, steering, suspension, bodywork and electrical systems. See Haynes’ Freelander coverage and availability.
Haynes also lists petrol 1.8 and L-Series diesel coverage. The product excludes the 2.5L V6 and the Freelander 2 range. The page showed the printed book as out of stock when accessed in 2026, so check the listing for current availability before ordering.
Check the generation before choosing a manual
Haynes’ listed coverage ends in October 2006; the Freelander 2 range began in November 2006. A manual for Freelander 1 should not be treated as coverage for Freelander 2, even if both vehicles carry the Freelander name. Confirm the model year and generation from the vehicle’s documents or identification details, and make sure the manual’s stated coverage matches.

How the Land Rover system-description manual differs
A Land Rover-published PDF is labeled “FREELANDER 2001 TO 2004 MY ONWARDS WORKSHOP MANUAL – SYSTEM DESCRIPTION AND OPERATION.” Its front matter identifies Part No. LRL0351 NAS, 5th Edition, and ©2003 Land Rover. The publication’s stated purpose is system description and operation; that is not evidence that it is a single, complete DIY repair manual. The copy is hosted on a third-party site, so its presence there does not establish an official current download channel. View the hosted Land Rover publication.

Search-indexed service data gives the TD4 engine displacement as 1,951 cm³, but power figures can vary by model year and gearbox. A reference page listing general data does not establish that every specification applies to every TD4. Consult the indexed TD4 service data, then verify specifications, torque values and procedures in a manual that matches your model year, transmission and market. Do not apply a torque figure or repair step solely because the engine badge says TD4.
