Lamborghini has shelved plans to put the all-electric version of its Lanzador concept into production. CEO Stephan Winkelmann says acceptance of full-electric cars in Lamborghini’s segment is “going almost to zero,” but that phrase is his description of dealer discussions and market and customer data—not a published survey result. The company now describes its planned fourth model as a plug-in hybrid and says it will keep developing full-electric capability.
What Lamborghini changed
Lamborghini unveiled the Lanzador as an electric concept in 2023. In February 2026, Winkelmann said the company had shelved the battery-electric production plan. The change is about the powertrain planned for the fourth model, not necessarily the end of the Lanzador name or direction: reporting says Lamborghini plans to make that model a plug-in hybrid instead.
In a June 2026 interview with Autocar Professional, Winkelmann said the fourth model would be a plug-in hybrid, while the earlier plan had been for a battery-electric vehicle. He said Lamborghini would continue developing its ability to build full-electric cars, but was postponing its first production EV. The interviews and reports reviewed do not establish a firm launch date for a future Lamborghini EV.
Why the company says it changed course
Winkelmann said Lamborghini reviewed market and customer data and spoke with dealers. He described acceptance of full-electric cars in Lamborghini’s segment as flattening and approaching zero. Speaking to WIRED, he said, “it was clear not only that the acceptance of full electric cars is flattening worldwide for our type of cars, it’s going almost to zero—if not to zero.”

That is the CEO’s characterization of the company’s findings, not a quantified measure of buyer interest: the reporting does not provide a numerical customer survey or other published demand statistic. His explanation also reflects Lamborghini’s view of its own market, not a measured conclusion about all luxury-car buyers.
Winkelmann has also emphasized the emotional experience Lamborghini customers expect, including the sound and feel associated with combustion engines. In remarks reported by The Guardian, he called heavy investment in a full EV before the market and customer base were ready “an expensive hobby” and “financially irresponsible” toward shareholders, customers, employees and their families. He argued that plug-in hybrids combine electric assistance with the emotion and power of an internal-combustion engine.

Is Lamborghini giving up on electric cars?
No. The company has postponed its first full-electric production model, but Winkelmann said it will continue working on full-electric development capability. That leaves open the possibility of a production EV later; it does not establish that one will launch, or when.
The decision also sits alongside Lamborghini’s recent business performance, but that figure should not be mistaken for evidence of the CEO’s demand assessment. The company reported 10,747 global deliveries in 2025, calling the total a record; The Guardian reported that Lamborghini said hybridization contributed to its results. Those company-level deliveries do not independently verify “close to zero” interest in an electric Lamborghini.
