KTM has introduced the 390 Adventure R as its more off-road-focused 390 Adventure, making the Royal Enfield Himalayan 450 a natural comparison—not a proven “killer.” The key distinction is that KTM’s U.S. announcement covered the 2025 range, while its currently indexed U.S. price is for the 2026 R.
What KTM announced for America
KTM North America announced the 2025 390 Adventure range on January 30, 2025, including the R and X. The company said the models were expected in showrooms in early 2025. Its May 22, 2025 brand update later said the R and X would begin arriving at authorized KTM dealerships worldwide during 2025; that statement does not establish present U.S. dealer inventory.
KTM cast the R as the range’s most off-road-focused model, citing a new chassis, long-travel suspension, rally-inspired design, and a 21-inch front/18-inch rear wheel combination. These are manufacturer descriptions, not independent test conclusions. KTM’s January 30, 2025 North American announcement called it “the most off-road focused adventure bike of the segment to date”—promotional positioning, not a comparative test result.
How the 390 Adventure R differs from the X
KTM presents the R as the more dirt-oriented choice and the X as a more approachable option. The distinction matters for riders comparing the KTM range itself, not just the Himalayan.

| Model | KTM’s stated positioning and features |
|---|---|
| 390 Adventure R | More off-road-focused; new chassis, long-travel suspension, rally-inspired design, and 21/18-inch wheels. |
| 390 Adventure X | More approachable; lower seat, cast wheels, LCD dashboard, and ABS. |
KTM said both 2025 models have a 3.69-gallon (14-liter) metal fuel tank and LED lighting. Its announcement does not establish that every feature listed for the X is exclusive to it, or provide enough detail here to compare every item of standard equipment across trims.
How it compares with the Royal Enfield Himalayan 450
The Himalayan 450 is a reasonable rival to consider, but the available evidence supports a comparison of positioning and equipment—not a verdict that one motorcycle beats the other. A February 3, 2025 Autocar India specification comparison examines areas including display, connectivity, riding modes, cruise control, seat adjustment, and tank capacity. Its market context is India, so its prices should not be applied to U.S. buyers.

Terrain and wheel setup
KTM explicitly positions the R for off-road use and specifies a 21-inch front and 18-inch rear wheel. Compare those claims against the exact Himalayan 450 variant you are considering; the available comparison material does not establish a controlled U.S. riding result or a universal winner on trails.
Fit and ergonomics
KTM distinguishes the X with a lower seat, while Autocar India includes Himalayan seat adjustment among its comparison points. Rider height, inseam, and intended riding position can make fit more consequential than a feature list. Check the specific variant and sit on the motorcycle before treating either model as the easier fit.

Equipment and controls
Useful items to compare on the exact bikes and variants include the dashboard, ABS, riding modes, cruise control, and connectivity. The sources identify these as comparison areas, but do not establish one complete, U.S.-specific, trim-by-trim feature matrix. Confirm standard versus optional equipment with the manufacturer or dealer for the model year in question.
Fuel capacity and range
KTM gives the 2025 R and X a 3.69-gallon (14-liter) tank. Tank capacity alone does not establish real-world range: fuel consumption, terrain, speed, load, and riding style also matter. The cited material does not provide a controlled range comparison between the two motorcycles.

U.S. price context—and why the years matter
The available U.S. figures are not a same-year or out-the-door comparison. KTM’s current U.S. page lists the 2026 390 Adventure R at $7,699 base MSRP plus $600 freight. Royal Enfield’s current U.S. Himalayan page lists variant MSRPs from $5,799 to $6,099 and excludes destination and handling, tax, title, license, and registration. Royal Enfield also notes that MSRP varies by model year and dealer prices may vary.
| Motorcycle and source context | U.S. listed price | Price basis |
|---|---|---|
| 2026 KTM 390 Adventure R; KTM U.S. page | $7,699 base MSRP | $600 freight listed separately; this is not the announced 2025 model’s price. |
| Royal Enfield Himalayan 450; current U.S. page | $5,799–$6,099 MSRP | Variant-dependent; destination/handling, tax, title, license, and registration excluded. MSRP varies by model year and dealer prices may vary. |
These figures provide current listed-price context, not final transaction totals or an exact comparison between 2025 motorcycles. For a 2025 R or X, ask a U.S. authorized KTM dealer about current availability and the price for the specific bike; the published arrival statements do not confirm stock today. KTM’s current U.S. 2026 390 Adventure R page and Royal Enfield’s U.S. Himalayan page provide the cited price bases.

What the “Himalayan killer” label gets wrong
“Killer” implies a decisive advantage in performance, value, or sales. The cited material does not establish one. KTM’s announcement supplies manufacturer claims and specifications; the India-market comparison supplies equipment-comparison axes, not a controlled U.S. head-to-head ride test. A buyer can compare the R’s stated off-road hardware, the Himalayan variant’s equipment, personal fit, and current local quotes—but should not read KTM’s launch language as proof that it outperforms the Royal Enfield.
