The 2025 Suzuki DR-Z4SM counters with longer suspension travel, fully adjustable KYB suspension and a gravel traction-control mode. Neither is categorically better: the right choice depends on fit, riding priorities and the current price in your market.
What the published specifications show
The model years and measurement bases matter. KTM’s US technical page is for the 2026 390 SMC R; Suzuki’s US page is for the 2025 DR-Z4SM. KTM lists weight both without fuel and fully fuelled, while Suzuki gives curb weight, so those figures do not establish which bike is lighter.
| Specification | 2026 KTM 390 SMC R (US) | 2025 Suzuki DR-Z4SM (US) |
|---|---|---|
| Engine displacement | 398.7 cm³ (KTM specifications) | 398 cc (Suzuki specifications) |
| Claimed output | 45 PS and 39 Nm, as stated by KTM | Not stated on Suzuki’s cited US specification page; 1000PS reported 38 hp and 37 Nm in its 2025 comparison (1000PS comparison) |
| Gearbox | Six-speed | Five-speed |
| Seat height | 860 mm | 890 mm |
| Suspension travel, front/rear | 230/230 mm | 260/277 mm |
| Front brake | 320 mm disc; radial two-piston ByBre caliper | 310 mm disc; dual-piston caliper |
| Weight | 154 kg without fuel; 161 kg fully fuelled | 154 kg curb weight |

Five reasons the KTM may suit a street-focused rider
1. More stated output and an extra gear
KTM specifies 45 PS and 39 Nm for the 390 SMC R, along with a six-speed gearbox. Suzuki’s US specification confirms the DR-Z4SM’s five-speed transmission but does not state output; 1000PS reported 38 hp and 37 Nm for the Suzuki in its 2025 comparison. Those figures come from different sources, so treat them as a useful reference rather than a controlled, like-for-like power test. The extra ratio gives the KTM another gear to work with, but the available evidence does not establish a performance advantage in acceleration or top speed.
2. A lower seat to consider for fit
KTM lists an 860 mm seat height, 30 mm below Suzuki’s 890 mm. That difference may make it easier for some riders to reach the ground, particularly when stopping or manoeuvring. Seat shape, suspension sag, inseam and riding boots also affect reach, so the measurement cannot guarantee that the KTM will fit every shorter rider better. Sit on both if possible.

3. A larger front disc and a radial caliper
The KTM has a 320 mm front disc and radial two-piston ByBre caliper; Suzuki lists a 310 mm disc and a dual-piston caliper. These are hardware differences, not evidence of a stopping-distance winner: no comparable braking test is established here. Their ABS choices are also described differently. KTM lists a Supermoto ABS option, while Suzuki provides a rear-ABS-off setting; those labels do not by themselves show which setup is safer or preferable for a particular rider.
4. A more information-rich screen
KTM’s 4.2-inch TFT supports music, incoming calls, navigation and USB charging according to its 2026 model page. Suzuki uses an LCD with a fuel gauge and its S.I.R.S. rider-aid settings. The KTM is the more feature-rich display proposition; the Suzuki still includes electronic controls rather than being a no-electronics alternative.

5. A potentially lower price in particular markets and dates
In a comparison published August 30, 2025, 1000PS listed German prices of €6,299 for the KTM and €9,699 for the Suzuki. Those are historical, country-specific list prices, not current universal retail prices. Suzuki GB announced a UK on-the-road price of £7,999 in June 2025 (Suzuki GB announcement). Before deciding on value, compare current local dealer quotes, taxes, fees and included equipment for the exact model year.
Where the Suzuki has the stronger case
Longer suspension travel and full adjustability
Suzuki lists 260 mm of front and 277 mm of rear travel, compared with 230 mm at both ends for the KTM. Its official page describes the KYB suspension as fully adjustable. KTM also has suspension adjustment, but the cited specifications do not establish directly comparable adjustment ranges or hardware. The Suzuki’s longer travel is a clear specification advantage for riders prioritizing suspension movement over the KTM’s lower seat.

Traction control with a gravel setting
The DR-Z4SM’s S.I.R.S. includes three power modes and traction control with a G (Gravel) mode, as well as the ability to turn traction control off. That gives the Suzuki a defined electronic setting for loose surfaces. The KTM’s Street and Sport modes and Supermoto ABS option serve a different feature mix; neither list makes one bike’s electronics universally superior.
A more traditional character, according to one comparison
In its 2025 head-to-head, 1000PS described the Suzuki as having stronger low-to-mid-range character and a more classic supermoto feel. Those are that publication’s riding impressions, not a universal outcome or a controlled instrumented comparison. They matter most if you value engine response and feel over the KTM’s specification-led advantages.

How to choose between them
- Lean toward the KTM if its lower seat, six-speed gearbox, stated output, TFT features or current local price best match your priorities.
- Lean toward the Suzuki if longer suspension travel, fully adjustable KYB components, a gravel traction-control mode or the riding character reported by 1000PS appeals more.
- Compare in person if seat reach or suspension feel is decisive; published dimensions do not substitute for a fit check or a ride.
- Get a current, local quote for the model years available where you live. The cited prices are from specific markets and dates, not a live price comparison.
No comparable fuel-economy, acceleration, stopping-distance or reliability test is established by the cited material, so those should not be used as proven tie-breakers. KTM’s North American launch release called the model a “welcome addition” to the segment, but that is manufacturer language rather than an independent verdict (KTM North America release, January 14, 2025).
