It is not a standalone electric-car motor sold to the public, but the electric machine developed for the production-specification Gemera hybrid. Its unusual “Raxial Flux” layout combines elements associated with radial-flux and axial-flux motors in an exceptionally compact package.
The headline figures are impressive, but the more important engineering story is packaging. One Dark Matter motor works with the Gemera’s Light Speed Tourbillon Transmission to support the hybrid drivetrain, front-axle electric contribution, all-wheel drive and four-wheel torque vectoring. The published figures are peak specifications; no independent efficiency map, continuous-output rating or customer-car teardown has established how the motor performs under sustained load.

Dark Matter specifications at a glance
| Specification | Koenigsegg-published figure | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Motor type | Six-phase “Raxial Flux” electric motor | A Koenigsegg term for a mixed radial- and axial-flux design, not a standardized industry category |
| Peak power | 800 hp | Approximately 596.6 kW; this is a peak figure, not a verified continuous rating |
| Peak torque | 1,250 Nm | Also a peak figure; it should not be assumed to occur at the motor’s maximum speed |
| Maximum speed | 8,500 rpm | A high rotational-speed limit for a road-car traction motor |
| Dimensions | 383.3 mm high × 381.5 mm wide × 135.5 mm long | The published motor envelope; it is notably short in the axial direction |
| Mass | 39 kg, approximately 86 lb | The published motor mass, not necessarily the mass of the complete motor, inverter and cooling system |
| Gemera high-voltage battery | 850 V, 14 kWh | A vehicle-system specification for the Gemera Client Specification |
| Hot-V8 Gemera combined output | 2,300 hp and 2,750 Nm | A published system figure; peak engine and motor values cannot simply be assumed to be simultaneously available in every condition |
Koenigsegg’s official English-language Gemera technical information uses 800 hp. Some secondary reports use “800 PS” instead. Horsepower and PS are close but not identical units, so the figures should not be mixed without labeling the conversion.
What “Raxial Flux” means
“Raxial Flux” is Koenigsegg’s name for a motor that combines radial-flux and axial-flux characteristics. It is not a universally accepted motor category in the same way that “radial-flux” and “axial-flux” are commonly used engineering descriptions.
In a conventional radial-flux motor, the principal magnetic flux crosses the air gap in a radial direction relative to the rotating shaft. The familiar cylindrical motor shape is closely associated with this arrangement: a rotor sits inside or outside a stator, and the magnetic interaction takes place around a cylindrical circumference.
In an axial-flux motor, the main flux crosses an air gap in a direction parallel to the shaft. The motor often takes on a disc-like or “pancake” appearance, with rotor and stator surfaces facing one another. This can produce a short axial package and a large effective rotor diameter, although the real benefits depend on the electromagnetic design, cooling system, materials, inverter and operating cycle.
| Architecture | Typical flux direction | Common packaging tendency | General engineering consideration |
|---|---|---|---|
| Radial flux | Across a cylindrical air gap, outward or inward relative to the shaft | Longer cylindrical form | Mature manufacturing and extensive automotive experience |
| Axial flux | Across a disc-like air gap, broadly parallel to the shaft | Shorter axial length and larger diameter | Potentially high torque density, with demanding structural and thermal design considerations |
| Raxial Flux | A combined arrangement using features of both | Koenigsegg’s compact, high-power packaging approach | A proprietary implementation that should not be treated as proof of automatic efficiency or reliability gains |
Contemporary technical descriptions portray Dark Matter as primarily axial in appearance, while modifying the rotor diameter and stator geometry to introduce a meaningful radial-flux contribution. The intended compromise is understandable: axial-flux geometry can help create high torque density and a short motor, while radial-flux principles are associated with mature, robust and high-speed motor designs.
That does not mean every axial-flux motor is inherently better at torque or every radial-flux motor is inherently better at power. Those outcomes depend on details such as magnetic loading, winding design, rotor strength, cooling, electrical switching, control strategy, materials and the precise duty cycle. “Raxial Flux” describes the design direction; it does not, by itself, prove a performance advantage over every conventional motor.
Why the 39 kg figure matters
The most striking combination in the specification is not simply 800 hp. It is 800 hp in a motor Koenigsegg says weighs 39 kg and measures only 135.5 mm in length.
Using the published figures, 800 hp is approximately 596.6 kW. Dividing that by 39 kg gives a peak specific power of roughly 15.3 to 15.4 kW/kg, or about 20.5 hp/kg. That is a calculation from Koenigsegg’s peak output and published motor mass—not an independently measured benchmark and not a continuous-power density figure.
Recommended Free Tools
The same caution applies to torque. Dividing 1,250 Nm by 39 kg produces roughly 32 Nm/kg, but peak torque density is not a complete measure of a motor’s usefulness. A motor must also survive the heat, mechanical stress and electrical demands associated with repeated operation. The public information does not show how long Dark Matter can sustain its headline output before thermal protection or control-system limits reduce it.

The 8,500-rpm maximum is another reminder that the headline numbers represent different parts of the motor’s operating envelope. As a simple physics conversion, 800 hp at 8,500 rpm would correspond to approximately 670 Nm if those values occurred at the same operating point. That is well below the separately published 1,250 Nm peak, illustrating why maximum power, maximum torque and maximum speed should not be treated as simultaneous ratings.
Koenigsegg says the single-motor production arrangement is lighter and smaller than the earlier three-electric-motor concept. That comparison comes from Koenigsegg’s own production-history and Client Specification material. No independent teardown or component-by-component comparison is available in the researched sources, so the claim should be understood as a manufacturer-reported packaging result rather than an independently verified weight study.
Dark Matter’s role in the Koenigsegg Gemera
The Gemera’s electric powertrain changed substantially between its 2020 introduction and its production-form Client Specification.
The original 2020 concept
When Koenigsegg first introduced the Gemera in 2020, the hybrid architecture centered on the company’s 2.0-liter, three-cylinder “Tiny Friendly Giant” engine and multiple compact Quark electric motors. That layout used several electric machines to provide propulsion and torque distribution.
The 2023 production-form change
Koenigsegg’s July 2023 Client Specification announcement introduced a major revision. The production-oriented Gemera adopted Dark Matter in place of the earlier three-motor electric arrangement for the relevant powertrain. The revised drivetrain also used the Light Speed Tourbillon Transmission, or LSTT.
For the hot-V8 version, the Gemera combines:
- 5.0-liter twin-turbocharged V8: 1,500 hp and 1,500 Nm;
- Dark Matter electric motor: 800 hp and 1,250 Nm;
- Published combined system output: 2,300 hp and 2,750 Nm;
- High-voltage battery: 850 V and 14 kWh;
- Vehicle drivetrain: four-wheel drive and four-wheel torque vectoring.
The 2,300-hp and 2,750-Nm numbers are system specifications. They should not be interpreted as a guarantee that the engine and motor can deliver their individual peak numbers together at every vehicle speed, battery state of charge or thermal condition. Hybrid systems coordinate several energy sources, and maximum power and maximum torque typically occur at different operating points.
The 14-kWh battery also places the motor’s 800-hp headline in context. If the battery could theoretically provide the motor’s approximately 596.6 kW continuously and with no losses or reserve, 14 kWh would represent only around 1.4 minutes of energy. That is an illustrative calculation, not a claim about the Gemera’s actual discharge capability or driving range. It shows why a high-output hybrid motor is designed for a vehicle’s complete energy system rather than judged as though it were a battery-powered motor operating at peak output indefinitely.
How one motor supports all-wheel drive and torque vectoring
The Gemera’s official technical information lists four-wheel drive and four-wheel torque vectoring. Those are vehicle-level drivetrain capabilities, not a claim that Dark Matter independently drives all four wheels by itself.

The motor works as part of the hybrid drivetrain and is integrated with the LSTT. The transmission and associated control systems determine how combustion and electric torque are combined and distributed. That arrangement allows the electric side of the system to provide the front-axle contribution needed for the Gemera’s stated all-wheel-drive capability, while the broader drivetrain manages torque distribution and vectoring across the vehicle.
This is a key reason the packaging story matters. Koenigsegg was not merely trying to build a powerful motor on a test bench. It was trying to fit a high-output machine into a road-car hybrid system while reducing the number of electric motors and enabling the revised V8 drivetrain. The single Dark Matter motor therefore has a system-level job: deliver electric propulsion and torque-control capability without requiring the earlier three-motor arrangement.
Why six phases are significant
Most readers encounter three-phase electric motors, so Dark Matter’s six-phase design is an important technical distinction. In broad terms, a six-phase motor has six electrical phase windings or phase channels rather than the more familiar three. The exact winding and inverter arrangement matters, and Koenigsegg has not publicly disclosed enough detail to reconstruct the complete topology from the available sources.

Additional phases can create engineering opportunities, including:
- more flexibility in controlling the rotating magnetic field;
- possible fault-tolerance strategies if part of the system is disabled;
- the ability to continue producing reduced output after certain electrical faults, depending on the winding and inverter design;
- potential control and torque-ripple benefits in a properly engineered system.
Those are possible advantages of multiphase machines, not confirmed Dark Matter performance results. The researched technical material does not provide a full independently audited efficiency map, inverter topology, fault-mode analysis, continuous-output rating or thermal derating curve. Six-phase operation should therefore be described as a notable design choice—not automatic proof that Dark Matter is more efficient, more reliable or more durable than a three-phase motor.
What the patents reveal—and what they do not
Koenigsegg has pursued patent protection around axial-flux motor structures and related electric-powertrain technology. A published international application titled “Radially or axially enhanced electric motor” identifies Koenigsegg Automotive AB as the applicant and describes an electric motor that may use axial-flux architecture. A separate U.S. publication from 2026 concerns an axial-flux stator core and lists Koenigsegg Automotive AB as the assignee.
These publications are useful evidence that Koenigsegg is protecting motor architecture and component design. They are not, however, a complete public blueprint for Dark Matter. Patent documents describe protected embodiments and can cover alternatives or broader concepts that are not all used in a particular production component. The available research does not establish that every feature described in either publication appears in the specific Dark Matter motor installed in a customer Gemera.

Automotive reporting available for this article stated that Gemera production had begun by March 2026. The model was reported as limited to 300 cars, with customer allocations already accounted for. Later reporting in June 2026 described a first customer V8 Gemera appearing publicly.
The careful conclusion is that the Gemera had entered its initial customer-build phase by 2026. The available official material does not provide a complete production tally or delivery schedule, so it would be too strong to say that all 300 examples had already been delivered.

Efficiency
No verified efficiency map was found in the researched sources. The Raxial Flux name does not justify saying that Dark Matter is more efficient than a conventional radial-flux motor. Efficiency varies with speed, torque, temperature, inverter losses, cooling strategy and operating point.
Continuous power
The published 800-hp rating is a peak figure. Without a continuous rating or thermal-performance curve, it cannot establish how long the motor can sustain that output. This distinction is especially important for comparing a lightweight hypercar motor with motors designed for commercial vehicles, endurance racing or industrial duty cycles.
Carbon fiber and lightweight materials
Secondary coverage discusses extensive lightweight construction and carbon-fiber use in the Gemera and its components. Those descriptions should remain attributed to the relevant secondary sources. The official Dark Matter technical specification reviewed here does not itemize the motor’s complete material content, so carbon-fiber details should not be presented as a fully documented official motor specification.
Independent validation
No independent dyno test, teardown or instrumented road test of a customer Dark Matter motor was located in this research pass. Performance anecdotes and promotional descriptions should not be repeated as measured facts.

The public specification establishes that Dark Matter is unusually powerful for its published mass, but it leaves several questions open:
Best Value
- Principle: The simple motor model assembly kit fully demonstrates the working principle of the motor.
- Easy to use: Easy to assemble and disassemble, very suitable for school science projects or teaching.
- Working voltage: The working voltage of the motor model is 3v-6v. The demonstration motor equipped with a power cord will rotate like a real motor after it is connected to the 3-6V power supply.
- Widely used: Suitable for electronics enthusiasts and DIY beginners to learn, simple design is easy to use.
- Test: After assembling the kit, there is no problem with the test power supply, but it still does not work, then please check the armature coil and brushes. If they are in poor contact, please adjust them to be in close contact (turn the rotor bracket to make the gap between the two brushes) Located in the middle).
- Thermal endurance: How much power can the motor sustain on a track, and how quickly does output derate?
- Efficiency: What does the efficiency map look like across speed and load, particularly outside the narrow peak-power region?
- Cooling: How are the stator, rotor, bearings, magnets and power electronics cooled under repeated high-load use?
- Fault tolerance: How does the six-phase system behave after a winding, inverter or sensor fault?
- Durability: What service life and maintenance requirements apply to the motor in customer use?
- Serviceability: Can major components be repaired or replaced separately, or is the motor treated as a sealed assembly?
- Scalability: Can the Raxial Flux approach deliver similar benefits in a higher-volume vehicle, or are its manufacturing requirements best suited to a 300-car hypercar program?
Those unanswered questions do not diminish the engineering achievement. They define the boundary between a compelling published specification and a complete independent technical validation.
Verdict: why Dark Matter is genuinely notable
Dark Matter is notable because Koenigsegg combined a very high published peak output with a remarkably low published mass and integrated the result into a production-intended hybrid drivetrain. The motor’s mixed-flux architecture, six-phase electrical design and compact dimensions all support the same goal: extract a major amount of propulsion and torque-control capability from a small package.
The strongest description is not that Raxial Flux eliminates every compromise in electric-motor design. The public evidence does not establish that. The defensible conclusion is that Koenigsegg used a proprietary mixed-flux topology, high-speed operation, multiphase electronics and aggressive drivetrain packaging to replace a more complex three-motor concept in the Gemera’s revised powertrain.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Koenigsegg Dark Matter a standalone electric car motor?
No. Dark Matter is Koenigsegg’s in-house electric motor for the production-specification Gemera hybrid. It works with the Light Speed Tourbillon Transmission and the rest of the vehicle’s hybrid system rather than functioning as a consumer-replaceable motor.
How powerful is the Dark Matter motor?
Koenigsegg lists 800 hp, 1,250 Nm and a maximum speed of 8,500 rpm. These are peak manufacturer specifications, not independently verified continuous-output figures.
Is Raxial Flux the same as axial flux?
No. Raxial Flux is Koenigsegg’s terminology for a design combining radial-flux and axial-flux characteristics. It is not a standardized motor category, and the name alone does not prove superior efficiency or reliability.
Does Dark Matter drive all four wheels by itself?
No. The Gemera’s four-wheel drive and four-wheel torque-vectoring capabilities come from the complete drivetrain, including the motor, transmission and control systems. Dark Matter provides an important electric contribution, including the front-axle contribution described for the revised hybrid system.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsCan Dark Matter really produce 800 hp continuously?
The available public specifications do not establish that. The 800-hp figure is a peak rating, and Koenigsegg has not publicly supplied a complete continuous-power rating, efficiency map or thermal derating curve in the researched material.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Koenigsegg Dark Matter is best understood as a packaging and power-density exercise. Its published 800 hp, 1,250 Nm, 39 kg mass, six-phase operation and proprietary Raxial Flux layout make it technically unusual, but the public record does not yet prove a universal efficiency, reliability or durability advantage. Its real significance is how one compact motor helps transform the Gemera from the original three-motor hybrid concept into a production-oriented V8 hybrid with all-wheel drive and torque vectoring.
