Kia’s sporty-car story is less a sudden sales surge than a deliberate shift in brand identity. The company frames the 2017 Stinger as the start of an accessible-performance push and the EV6 GT as its electric-era continuation. Kia’s recent sales growth is real, but the published figures cover all its vehicles—not sporty models specifically.
Why are Kia cars getting sportier?
Kia’s own account traces its performance positioning from the Stinger to the EV6 GT. In the company’s retrospective, the Stinger launched in 2017 as a statement that sporty performance need not be confined to premium brands. Kia sums up that arc this way: “That challenge began with Stinger, evolved with EV6 GT, and keeps driving Kia forward.” Kia Heritage Archive
That is Kia’s interpretation of its own history, not an independent assessment of the market. The archive says its account was reconstructed from stakeholder interviews and historical records and may include partial dramatization. It supports a claim about the brand’s intended positioning, not proof that Kia has overtaken rivals or that performance cars have driven its growth.
What happened to the Kia Stinger?
Kia says the Stinger’s journey ended in 2023. The company presents the EV6 GT as carrying its performance legacy forward, but that is a link in brand positioning—not evidence that the cars are direct substitutes. One is a discontinued model; the other is an electric vehicle, and the available sources do not provide a matched comparison of price, handling, range or ownership costs. Kia Heritage Archive

Is the Kia EV6 GT a performance car?
Kia’s Korean-market reference brochure dated May 1, 2026 lists the EV6 GT at 650 PS and says it can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 3.5 seconds when Launch Control is used. These are manufacturer specifications, not independent test results; Kia also cautions that specifications vary by trim and options. The figures describe the Korean-market brochure and should not be assumed to apply unchanged in other markets or model years. Kia EV6 GT brochure
Do Kia’s sales figures prove its sporty models are rising?
No. Kia Corporation reported 3,135,873 global vehicle sales in 2025, up 1.5 percent year over year. Kia America separately reported 852,155 U.S. vehicle sales in 2025, up 7 percent over 2024. Both totals cover the brands’ vehicles overall; neither source breaks out sporty models or shows that they caused the increase. Kia Corporation’s 2025 results Kia America’s 2025 sales announcement

Where does performance fit in Kia’s wider strategy?
Kia’s 2026 investor strategy release emphasizes continued electrification and identifies the Sportage as a strategic volume model. That context helps explain why the company can promote a high-performance EV while also relying on mainstream vehicles for scale. It does not establish growth in the sporty-vehicle segment. The evidence supports a story about changing image and product positioning: Kia says the Stinger began its accessible-performance effort, and it now casts the EV6 GT as the next chapter. Its recent sales totals show company-wide growth, not a measured rise in sporty-car sales. The distinction matters: Kia’s performance narrative is clear, while the size of any sporty-model sales boom is not established by these figures.
