Kia’s plan is to broaden its electric-vehicle lineup, make EVs more accessible and localize production—not simply to sell two smaller cars. The EV3 is a compact electric SUV, while the EV4 serves passenger-EV demand. Kia says it aims to offer 14 EV models and sell 1 million EVs annually by 2030; those are company targets, not achieved results.
What Kia’s EV strategy includes
At its April 2026 CEO Investor Day, Kia described three pillars for its EV strategy: product competitiveness, improved accessibility and a stronger EV supply chain. It also said it is developing next-generation EV platforms to improve performance and cost competitiveness. These initiatives span passenger EVs, SUVs and purpose-built vehicles (PBVs), alongside plans involving accessibility and charging infrastructure. Kia’s 2026 CEO Investor Day announcement presents the goals as part of a broader growth plan.
Kia President and CEO Ho Sung Song said, “EVs, HEVs, autonomous driving, and robotics will serve as key drivers for Kia’s fastest growth to date.” The statement underscores that EVs are one part of Kia’s growth strategy, rather than the whole of it.
Kia’s 2030 targets—and what they mean
Kia’s 2026 announcement sets a target of 1 million annual EV sales by 2030, equivalent to a company-stated 3.8% of the global EV market. It also targets a 14-model EV lineup: two passenger vehicles, nine SUVs and three PBV models. These are forward-looking company targets, not current sales or confirmed market outcomes.

For context, Kia reported 749,000 electrified-vehicle sales in 2025, up 17.4% year over year. That total includes hybrid-electric (HEV), plug-in hybrid-electric (PHEV) and battery-electric vehicles; it is not an EV-only sales figure. Kia’s 2026 company results and strategy materials distinguish the broader electrified total from its EV ambitions.
Where the EV3 and EV4 fit
EV3: a compact SUV aimed at wider access
The EV3 is a compact electric SUV, not a hatchback. Kia’s global brand page calls it a strategic model designed to make EVs more accessible through affordable pricing. That describes Kia’s positioning; it does not establish that the EV3 will cost less to own for every buyer or in every market. EV4: a passenger EV for a different role
Kia places the EV4 within passenger-EV demand, distinct from the small-SUV role it assigns to the EV3 and EV2. The two models therefore broaden the lineup in different directions rather than serving as direct equivalents. Kia’s investor presentation lists the EV3 launch timeline as July 2024 and the EV4 timeline as March 2025. Those are launch-timeline dates in the presentation, not a guarantee of availability in every country on those dates. Kia’s investor-day materials show the volume-EV lineup timeline.
How production supports the plan
Kia’s strategy treats regional production as part of EV execution. The company identifies Europe as a planned production region for the EV2 and EV4, and describes Korea as a global development and production hub. It also says it uses a mix of flexible facilities and EV-dedicated plants. Its 2026 investor presentation counts 13 mixed-production plants—seven domestic and six overseas—and two EV-dedicated plants. These are figures from Kia’s presentation, not an independent assessment of production capacity. The investor-day materials outline the production approach.

Localization can help Kia adapt supply to regional markets, but a planned production location alone does not establish a country’s price, delivery date or availability. Those details depend on market-specific announcements.
What Kia’s affordability claims do—and don’t—establish
Kia links the EV3 to improved accessibility and says its next-generation platforms are intended to improve cost competitiveness. Those statements explain the company’s direction; they do not prove that either vehicle is cheaper than a particular alternative once local incentives, taxes, financing and ownership costs are considered.

Kia Korea’s announcement for 2026 EV3 and EV4 trims lists retail prices in Korean won under a specified basis: a 3.5% individual consumption tax and eco-friendly vehicle tax benefits. The figures apply to the Korean market and the listed configurations. They should not be treated as global prices or compared directly with another country’s sticker price without accounting for tax treatment, incentives, trim and date. Kia’s 2026 presentation forecasts 157,000 units of combined EV2 and EV3 sales in Europe’s B-SUV EV segment in 2030, corresponding to a 20.6% segment share. What buyers can reasonably compare
The strategy information establishes a meaningful distinction in body style and intended segment: EV3 is a compact SUV, while EV4 belongs to Kia’s passenger-EV lineup. It does not provide a like-for-like, cross-market comparison of range, charging, performance or current pricing. Buyers should use the specifications and prices published for their own country and model year rather than infer those details from Kia’s global strategy targets.
