Kia’s Tasman is the automaker’s first pickup, unveiled in full on October 29, 2024. Kia claims up to 3,500 kg of towing capacity and up to 1,151 kg of payload, while the Australian-market version announced by Hyundai Motor Group uses a 2.2-liter diesel. Those figures make the Tasman worth watching, but they do not prove it will outperform the Ford Ranger: the available Kia and Ford specifications cover different markets and configurations.
What is the Kia Tasman?
The Tasman is Kia’s first pickup truck. At its October 29, 2024 world premiere in Jeddah, Kia showed Baseline, X-Line, and X-Pro Double Cab models and announced a global launch plan for 2025. Hyundai Motor Group said Korea was to be the first market in the first half of 2025, followed by Australia, Africa, and the Middle East. These were launch plans, not confirmation of current availability in every market. Kia’s global specification page also cautions that specifications can vary by region and change.
How large is the Tasman?
Kia’s global specification page lists the Tasman at 5,410 mm long, 1,930 mm wide, and with a 3,270 mm wheelbase. Listed height is 1,870 mm for the standard version and 1,920 mm for the off-road version. Confirm the dimensions for the specific regional model before comparing it with another pickup or checking garage clearance. Kia notes that specifications vary by region.
What are the Tasman’s towing, payload, and off-road claims?
Kia lists maximum towing capacity of up to 3,500 kg and maximum payload of up to 1,151 kg. It also claims the truck can wade through water up to 800 mm deep at 7 km/h. These are manufacturer-published maxima, not guarantees for every Tasman configuration. Kia directs drivers to follow local law and the owner’s manual; check the applicable vehicle’s ratings and conditions rather than assuming every maximum applies at once. Which engine does the Tasman have?
For the Australian-market Tasman, Hyundai Motor Group announced a 2.2-liter diesel producing 210 PS and 441 Nm, paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission. The company stated a 0–100 km/h time of 10.4 seconds. These figures describe the announced Australian-market powertrain, not every market or trim; Kia’s regional specifications should be checked for the version being considered.
What does Kia say about the bed and durability testing?
Kia’s 2024 reveal release advertised 1,173 liters of cargo volume, a sliding cargo floor, corner steps, and an illuminated outlet in the bed. The published cargo-volume figure is Kia’s claim; the release does not establish that it is directly comparable with how another manufacturer measures bed volume.

Kia’s global page says development involved approximately 18,000 test rounds across 1,777 test types, with the number of rounds varying by test. It also describes 30,000 km of testing in the Australian outback. These are Kia’s descriptions of its own testing, not independent durability results.

The Ford Ranger comparison available here is specific to the 2024 North American model, so it is not a like-for-like verdict against the Tasman’s market-dependent figures. Ford says a properly equipped Ranger Crew Cab 4×2 with a 2.3-liter engine and tow package can reach 7,500 lb of towing and 1,805 lb of payload. Ford’s footnote says those maxima are independent and may not be achieved simultaneously. The same corporate page lists an available 2.7-liter EcoBoost V6. Ford’s 2024 Ranger specifications identify the North American model and the configuration attached to those maximums.

Comparing the Tasman’s kilogram ratings directly with the Ranger’s U.S. pound ratings would be misleading without matching market, model year, trim, drivetrain, cab, and measurement conditions. A useful buyer comparison should assess towing and payload separately, then look at engine and transmission, bed dimensions, off-road equipment, safety, warranty, and price for the same market. The figures cited here do not establish a universal winner, predicted sales, or proof that Ford is losing ground.
