Kia Soul Problems Commonly Reported: Best and Worst Generations to Buy (2009–2023)

The best used Kia Soul targets are generally 2017–2019 2.0 MPI models, followed by verified 2020–2023 examples. Here is what to know about engine recalls, oil consumption, fire risk, theft, Soul EV issues, and pre-purchase inspections.

Short answer: For a used U.S.-market Kia Soul, the best risk-adjusted choices are usually a 2017–2019 Soul with the naturally aspirated 2.0-liter MPI engine, followed by a 2020–2023 Soul with the 2.0-liter MPI engine after recall, security, and engine-condition checks. The years requiring the most caution are 2014–2016 Souls with the 2.0-liter GDI engine, certain 2021–2023 2.0-liter MPI Souls with unresolved recall work, and any key-operated Soul with no confirmed anti-theft upgrade or factory immobilizer.

These are risk-adjusted used-buy recommendations, not absolute reliability rankings. A well-maintained, properly repaired example can be a better purchase than a newer Soul with an unknown history, excessive oil consumption, theft damage, or an open safety campaign.

The Kia Soul years worth targeting

For most shoppers, the buying order is:

  1. 2017–2019 2.0-liter MPI Soul: the preferred second-generation target when maintenance is documented and recall and theft-deterrent work is complete.
  2. 2020 2.0-liter MPI Soul: a newer-generation alternative with a relatively simple naturally aspirated powertrain.
  3. 2022–2023 2.0-liter MPI Soul: attractive for newer equipment, but only after confirming completion of the applicable piston-oil-ring-related recall.
  4. 2012–2013 Soul: worth considering only when the price reflects its age and the car has unusually strong records, a clean inspection, and completed fire-related recall work.

The most important exception is the engine. Do not identify a Soul solely by its trim badge or model year. The same generation can have different engines and different risk considerations. Confirm whether the car has a 1.6-liter GDI, 2.0-liter GDI, naturally aspirated 2.0-liter MPI, or 1.6-liter turbocharged GDI engine.

Best and worst Kia Soul generations at a glance

U.S. model years Generation What to know Used-buy verdict
2009–2013 First generation Older suspension, brake, electrical, paint, seal, and interior wear are now major variables. Certain 2011–2013 cars were recalled for a possible ABS-module electrical short and engine-compartment fire risk. Key-operated examples may also have theft exposure. Buy only on condition and records, not simply because the price is low.
2014–2016 Early second generation Certain 2.0-liter GDI Souls are covered by a knock-sensor detection-system campaign related to connecting-rod-bearing damage. Certain 2014–2015 2.0-liter Nu GDI Souls also had a separate engine-compartment-fire recall. The main caution group. Require VIN verification, a cold-start inspection, and convincing engine documentation.
2017–2019 Late second generation Many buyers prefer the naturally aspirated 2.0-liter MPI configuration because it avoids the most clearly documented GDI-specific campaigns discussed above. Owner reports still include oil consumption, brake wear, trim and paint problems, and occasional electrical or transmission complaints. Best second-generation target when equipped with the 2.0 MPI and properly maintained.
2020 Third generation Most trims use a naturally aspirated 2.0-liter MPI engine; the GT-Line Turbo uses a 1.6-liter turbocharged GDI engine with a dual-clutch transmission. Qualifying 2020 configurations earned an IIHS Top Safety Pick designation. A sensible newer choice after security and VIN-specific recall checks. The safety award is not a reliability rating.
2021–2023 Third generation Certain 2.0-liter MPI Souls were recalled because of a supplier-related piston-oil-ring quality deviation. Buyers should investigate oil use, warning lights, stalling, and any engine replacement. Potentially good purchases after recall completion and an independent inspection; avoid unresolved symptoms.

Production and model-year boundaries can overlap. Kia identifies the first-generation AM platform as beginning production on January 8, 2009 and continuing through October 2, 2013, and the second-generation PS platform as running from July 21, 2013 through December 24, 2018. The third-generation SK3 platform began production in late 2018, but the new generation launched in the United States for the 2020 model year. For a specific vehicle, the VIN and build information are more useful than a generic generation label.

Why 2014–2016 Souls deserve the most caution

The 2014–2016 model years overlap with the Soul’s most significant documented engine concerns, particularly when the vehicle has the 2.0-liter GDI engine.

Kia’s knock-sensor detection-system campaign covers certain 2014–2016 Souls with that engine. The update is intended to detect symptoms associated with connecting-rod-bearing damage. Kia’s 2025 renotification states that, after the qualifying update is completed, Kia will provide coverage for qualifying long-block repairs caused by connecting-rod-bearing damage for 15 years or 150,000 miles from the first service date, for both new and used owners. That should not be interpreted as a blanket warranty for every engine problem. The vehicle must qualify, the campaign must be completed, and the failure must meet the applicable terms.

A separate recall covered certain 2014–2015 Souls with the 2.0-liter Nu GDI engine. The remedy process involved checking for fuel or oil leaks, testing the engine, and repairing or replacing the engine when necessary. The two actions address related engine-risk concerns but are not interchangeable; a seller saying that one campaign was completed does not prove that every applicable recall or coverage action is closed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Kia’s engine-litigation settlement also included specified 2012–2019 Soul vehicles equipped with certain 2.0-liter Nu GDI and 1.6-liter Gamma GDI engines. Inclusion in a settlement is not the same as an open recall, a guarantee of failure, or proof that a particular vehicle is eligible for a repair. Ask a Kia dealer to check the exact VIN and retain all campaign and repair paperwork.

What to look for on a 2014–2016 inspection

  • Engine knock, especially during a cold start or under light acceleration.
  • Low oil on the dipstick, repeated oil top-offs, or a seller who cannot explain the car’s oil-use history.
  • Oil pressure, check-engine, or other warning lights.
  • Blue exhaust smoke, rough running, hard starting, or stalling.
  • Evidence of a short-block or long-block replacement without a detailed invoice.
  • A cleared fault-code history or recently disconnected battery that prevents a useful scan.

A clean 10-minute test drive cannot rule out internal engine wear. If the car is otherwise attractive, arrange a genuinely cold start and pay for an independent inspection before committing.

Commonly reported Kia Soul problems by category

1. Engine damage and oil consumption

Engine trouble is the most consequential category because it can turn an inexpensive used car into an unaffordable repair. The documented connecting-rod-bearing campaign affects certain 2014–2016 2.0-liter GDI Souls, while the separate 2014–2015 recall involved inspection and possible repair or replacement of certain 2.0-liter Nu GDI engines. Owner-survey and complaint material also identifies oil consumption and major engine trouble on some Soul model years.

Oil consumption is not a VIN-specific diagnosis by itself. A buyer needs to establish how much oil the engine uses, whether the owner monitored it between changes, whether warning lights occurred, and whether the engine has already been replaced. An engine replacement can reduce risk if it was performed correctly, but it can also create uncertainty when the seller has no invoice, mileage record, or warranty documentation.

2. Fire-related recalls

Fire references attached to the Soul do not all describe the same defect:

Ultra bright display stays perfectly readable in the harshest sunlight, no squinting or shielding required.
  • 2011–2013 Souls: a recall involved possible internal brake-fluid leakage in the ABS module. The fluid could create an electrical short and increase the risk of an engine-compartment fire. At the time of the NHTSA alert, Kia knew of one engine-compartment fire, three fires in the unit, and six melting incidents.
  • Certain 2014–2015 Souls: the engine-related recall involved the 2.0-liter Nu GDI configuration and called for leak inspection, engine testing, and repair or replacement where required.

Do not apply either issue to every Soul of the same year. Use the NHTSA VIN recall lookup and have a Kia dealer confirm the manufacturer’s campaign history. The completed-remedy record matters more than a broad internet list of affected model years.

3. Theft, immobilizers, and insurance

Theft risk is a practical ownership problem, not merely a security footnote. Many key-operated U.S.-market Hyundai and Kia vehicles lacked an engine immobilizer, and theft attempts were amplified by widely shared social-media methods. NHTSA says Hyundai and Kia developed free anti-theft software for millions of vehicles that lacked immobilizers.

Kia lists 2010–2022 Souls among vehicles eligible for a free theft-deterrent hardware measure when the vehicle is not eligible for the software upgrade. Depending on the vehicle, the protection may involve a software update, an ignition-cylinder protector, or factory equipment. Do not assume that every Soul of a particular year has the same protection. Kia’s equipment information shows that immobilizer availability can vary by trim; a base LX may differ from higher trims.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A physical Kia Soul steering wheel lock can serve as a supplemental deterrent for a key-operated car, but it is not a replacement for checking Kia’s official software or hardware campaign. Before buying, verify the exact security equipment, obtain an insurance quote using the VIN, and ask whether the vehicle’s location, trim, theft history, or completed retrofit affects coverage. Some owners face insurance or financing complications even when the vehicle itself is mechanically sound.

4. Air-bag and electrical concerns

Certain 2017–2019 Soul and Soul EV vehicles were recalled because damage to the air-bag control unit circuit could deactivate the air bags. This is a safety-system issue that deserves separate verification from ordinary electrical complaints.

Consumer survey material for the 2018 Soul also records reports involving paint and trim, brake wear, noises and leaks, body hardware, steering or suspension, exhaust components, oil consumption, and electrical accessories. These reports are useful prompts for an inspection, but they are not controlled failure rates for every 2018 Soul. A complaint pattern tells you what to examine; it does not predict that a particular car will fail.

5. Soul EV-specific problems

The Soul EV has additional systems that do not apply to gasoline models. Certain 2015–2019 Soul EVs were recalled for a high-voltage battery short-circuit risk. Other EVs in that range were subject to a parking-mechanism issue that could allow unintended movement when the vehicle was powered on and not secured with the parking brake.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For an EV, ask for documentation showing that every applicable battery and parking-mechanism remedy was completed. During the inspection, check charging behavior, battery warning messages, range consistency, charge-port condition, and whether the vehicle enters or remains in a reduced-power mode. A gasoline-Soul inspection checklist is not enough for an EV.

6. Age-related wear and everyday complaints

Even a Soul without a major recall history can need substantial work because of age or neglect. Inspect brakes, tires, shocks and struts, steering and suspension joints, exhaust heat shields, oil and coolant leaks, hatch operation, weather seals, paint, door hardware, air conditioning, windows, locks, lights, infotainment, and warning-light operation.

The unique led flashlight has 3 modes, including flash light, strobe light and sos light, which will help you in time when you encounter an emergency situation outdoors.

On an older first-generation car, these ordinary repairs may matter more than a single model-year reputation. A low purchase price does not make a worn suspension, rust, poor previous collision repair, or neglected maintenance inexpensive to correct.

Best Kia Soul years and configurations to buy

2017–2019 2.0-liter MPI: best second-generation target

These are the most attractive second-generation Souls for a risk-conscious buyer when they have the naturally aspirated 2.0-liter MPI engine, complete maintenance records, no unexplained oil consumption, and completed security work.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The recommendation is comparative. It reflects the desire to avoid the most clearly documented 2.0-liter GDI engine campaigns associated with the earlier second-generation cars; it is not evidence that every 2017–2019 Soul is trouble-free. Check the VIN, engine, service history, accident history, and current condition.

2020 2.0-liter MPI: newer packaging with a simpler target powertrain

Most 2020 Soul trims use a naturally aspirated 2.0-liter MPI engine. The GT-Line Turbo uses a 1.6-liter turbocharged GDI engine paired with a dual-clutch transmission. If minimizing powertrain complexity is the priority, the naturally aspirated 2.0-liter version is the more straightforward target. That is a mechanical-risk inference from the configurations, not a published comparative failure rate.

The 2020 Soul was an IIHS Top Safety Pick when equipped with specified headlights and optional front-crash-prevention equipment. Check the actual equipment on the car being considered; the award does not apply identically to every trim or headlight configuration, and it says nothing by itself about engine reliability.

2022–2023 2.0-liter MPI: newer, but verify the piston-ring recall

Certain 2021–2023 Souls with 2.0-liter Nu MPI engines were recalled after Kia identified a supplier-related piston-oil-ring quality deviation. NHTSA recall material describes engine-replacement claims, stalling allegations, and a small number of fire allegations in the field information reviewed by Kia.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A 2022 or 2023 Soul can still be a good candidate, but the VIN must show that the applicable remedy was completed. Inspect for abnormal oil use, engine noise, warning lights, stalling history, and evidence of an engine replacement. Do not treat a newer model year as a substitute for recall verification.

2012–2013 1.6-liter or 2.0-liter: only with excellent records

These first-generation cars can be inexpensive and practical, but they are now old enough that condition dominates the decision. Confirm the ABS-related recall remedy, investigate theft protection, check for oil leaks and suspension or brake wear, and budget for age-related repairs. A particularly clean, well-documented example can work; it is not the default recommendation for a buyer seeking the lowest risk.

Which Kia Soul years and versions should buyers approach cautiously?

  • 2014–2016 2.0-liter GDI: the highest-priority caution group because of the connecting-rod-bearing protection campaign and separate engine-related recall activity affecting certain vehicles.
  • 2015–2016 cars with unexplained oil use, engine knock, or an undocumented replacement engine: require dealer campaign confirmation and an independent inspection before purchase.
  • 2010–2021 key-operated Souls without confirmed security protection: assess theft exposure and insurance availability before paying a deposit.
  • 2021–2023 2.0-liter MPI Souls with an open recall or unresolved stall or engine symptoms: do not accept a low price as compensation for an unresolved safety or powertrain issue.
  • 2015–2019 Soul EVs with incomplete battery or parking-mechanism recall records: verify the high-voltage and parking-system remedies before buying.
  • Any Soul with a salvage, flood, theft-recovery, or poorly repaired collision history: title and repair quality can outweigh the apparent advantages of a preferred model year.

How to inspect a used Kia Soul before buying

1. Check the VIN before negotiating

Run the VIN through the NHTSA recall lookup. Then ask a Kia dealer to check completed recalls, manufacturer campaigns, service actions, and any applicable engine coverage. Public recall results do not necessarily answer every question about a manufacturer campaign or extended coverage program.

For a specific listing, a Kia Soul VIN history report can help uncover title branding, reported theft, salvage history, odometer events, prior collisions, and an engine replacement. It does not replace a mechanical inspection and may not contain every repair or accident.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

2. Identify the exact engine and transmission

Confirm the engine using the VIN, original window sticker, service records, and under-hood information. Record whether it is the 1.6-liter GDI, 2.0-liter GDI, 2.0-liter MPI, or 1.6-liter turbocharged GDI configuration. Also note whether the car has the dual-clutch transmission used with the third-generation turbo configuration.

This step prevents a common mistake: treating a recommended model year as though every trim and engine within that year had the same risk profile.

3. Verify the engine campaigns

  • For a 2014–2016 2.0-liter GDI Soul, verify the knock-sensor detection-system update and ask the Kia dealer whether the 15-year/150,000-mile qualifying long-block coverage applies based on the first service date and the vehicle’s records.
  • For a 2014–2015 2.0-liter Nu GDI Soul, verify the separate inspection and remedy history for fuel or oil leaks and engine condition.
  • For a 2021–2023 2.0-liter MPI Soul, verify completion of the piston-oil-ring-related recall and ask whether there is any history of stalling, excessive oil use, or engine replacement.

4. Arrange a true cold start

Ask the seller not to warm up the Soul before arrival. On a cold start, watch for extended cranking, loud tapping or knocking, rough idle, smoke, warning lights, or a check-engine light that appears and then disappears. Check the oil level before driving and look for fresh oil or coolant leaks.

During the drive, test low-speed acceleration, highway merging, braking, steering, reverse, air conditioning, and all electrical accessories. Listen for engine noise that changes with load or engine speed. Do not use a quiet idle and a short drive as proof that the internal engine is healthy.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

5. Scan the car, but do not mistake a scan for a diagnosis

An OBD2 scanner for used-car inspection can reveal stored trouble codes and help identify whether warning systems were recently reset. Check readiness monitors as well as active and pending codes. A scanner cannot measure every internal engine problem, confirm oil consumption, or substitute for compression, leak-down, oil-pressure, or other professional tests where appropriate.

Be cautious if all monitors are incomplete, the battery was recently disconnected, or the seller refuses to allow an independent scan. Those facts do not prove wrongdoing, but they reduce the usefulness of the test drive.

6. Pay for an independent inspection

A Kia Soul pre-purchase inspection is especially valuable for a 2014–2016 GDI car, a 2021–2023 car with any engine symptom, a vehicle bought remotely, or an example with an engine replacement. Tell the inspector about the specific recall and ask for written comments on oil consumption evidence, engine noise, codes, leaks, prior repairs, underbody damage, brakes, suspension, tires, exhaust, and collision repair.

7. Verify theft protection and insurance

Ask Kia to document whether the Soul has a factory immobilizer, the official anti-theft software update, an ignition-cylinder protector, or another applicable security measure. Equipment can vary by trim, so do not infer the answer from the model year.

Before paying a deposit, obtain a Kia Soul insurance quote using the exact VIN and your actual address. Confirm comprehensive coverage, theft-related terms, and whether the insurer will cover the particular vehicle. Never assume that a security retrofit guarantees a standard premium or coverage decision.

8. Use the right checklist for a Soul EV

For a Soul EV, add high-voltage battery recall completion, charge-port condition, charging performance, battery warning messages, range behavior, and parking-mechanism software work to the inspection. Never rely only on the gasoline-Soul recall list.

A practical pass, negotiate, or walk-away framework

Finding Decision Why
VIN campaigns closed, security protection confirmed, complete service records, clean cold start, no significant oil-use evidence, and an independent inspection with no major findings Consider buying This is the combination that matters more than a favorable year by itself.
Cosmetic wear, worn tires or brakes, minor leaks, or deferred routine service with a fair price Negotiate These may be predictable ownership costs if the powertrain and safety systems check out.
Open engine or safety recall, unexplained knock, repeated low-oil warnings, severe oil consumption, stalling, or no repair documentation Walk away The risk and repair cost are not adequately controlled.
Key-operated Soul with no confirmed security upgrade and an insurance quote that is unaffordable or unavailable Usually walk away A mechanically sound vehicle can still be a poor ownership decision if theft and insurance exposure cannot be managed.
Soul EV with incomplete battery or parking-mechanism recall documentation Walk away until verified Do not purchase first and investigate high-voltage safety work later.

What matters more than the model year?

On an older Kia Soul, the following factors can easily outweigh a one- or two-year difference:

  1. Engine configuration: MPI, GDI, and turbocharged GDI versions should not be treated as identical.
  2. Recall and campaign completion: a VIN-specific repair record is more meaningful than a generalized year ranking.
  3. Oil-use history: repeated top-offs, low oil, knock, or an undocumented replacement engine should change the decision.
  4. Security equipment: immobilizer status and completed anti-theft work affect theft exposure and potentially insurance.
  5. Maintenance quality: regular oil changes, documented repairs, and prompt warning-light response are major positives.
  6. Title and collision history: theft recovery, flood damage, and poor structural repairs can create problems unrelated to the Soul’s normal model-year pattern.
  7. Inspection quality: a paid independent inspection is more useful than a seller’s assurance that the car drives normally.

Routine maintenance parts such as a cabin or engine air filter can be inexpensive ways to establish a baseline after purchase, but fit is year-, engine-, and trim-dependent. Verify compatibility before ordering rather than assuming every Soul uses the same part.

Bottom line for used Kia Soul shoppers

The safest general shopping strategy is to start with a 2017–2019 2.0-liter MPI Soul, then consider a 2020–2023 2.0-liter MPI Soul with every applicable recall closed and its security status confirmed. Treat the 2014–2016 2.0-liter GDI Soul as a high-verification purchase rather than an automatic bargain. Older first-generation Souls can work, but only when condition, records, recall completion, and price compensate for their age.

Whatever the year, do not buy until the VIN has been checked, the exact engine has been identified, insurance has been quoted, and an independent inspector has looked for engine noise, oil-use evidence, codes, leaks, prior repairs, theft or collision damage, and unresolved recall-related work.

The Bottom Line

Best bet: a documented 2017–2019 2.0 MPI Soul. Newer alternative: a 2020–2023 2.0 MPI model after VIN-specific recall and security verification. Biggest caution: 2014–2016 2.0 GDI cars, plus any Soul with unexplained oil consumption, engine noise, an open recall, or no confirmed anti-theft protection.
