Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteFor the G4ED timing-belt procedure described in the available service-manual material, set cylinder No. 1 at compression top dead center (TDC): align the crankshaft pulley groove with the timing cover’s “T” mark and the camshaft sprocket mark with the mark on the cylinder-head cover. Fit the belt with the specified spans taut, set tension using the procedure for the exact vehicle, then rotate the crankshaft two turns in its operating direction and recheck both marks and tension. Confirm the year, market and engine variant before applying any specification; the available manual copies do not establish one universal procedure for every G4ED application.
Find and align the G4ED timing marks
Start with cylinder No. 1 at TDC on its compression stroke. The G4ED service-manual procedure identifies two marks to align:
- Crankshaft: align the groove in the crankshaft pulley with the “T” timing mark on the timing-belt cover.
- Camshaft: align the camshaft sprocket mark with the timing mark on the cylinder-head cover.
The Kia Rio G4ED manual result also describes aligning the camshaft and crankshaft marks with No. 1 at compression TDC. These references support the mark locations, but they do not establish that every year, market or engine variant uses identical parts or procedures. See the G4ED service-manual timing-mark procedure and the Kia Rio G4ED manual reference.
Install the timing belt without shifting the marks
- With the engine positioned at compression TDC and both marks aligned, route the belt in this order: crankshaft sprocket, idler pulley, camshaft sprocket, then timing-belt tensioner.
- Keep the belt taut across the spans between the crankshaft, idler and camshaft as you fit it. Slack can move a sprocket and put the marks out of alignment.
- Adjust the tensioner according to the exact vehicle’s service procedure. The manual copy gives a tensioner mounting-bolt torque of 19.6–26.5 N·m (14.5–19.5 lb-ft), but that value should not be assumed to apply to every G4ED installation.
The belt route and bolt torque come from a third-party-hosted G4ED engine manual copy; check the applicable factory information and illustrations for the vehicle being repaired. G4ED belt installation procedure.

- AISIN's Water Pump/Timing Belt Service Kit is the common-sense combo as these components should always be replaced at the same time regardless of which component needs replacement
- The work involved in replacing one of these components is about the same as replacing all of them - save yourself time and money in the long run by replacing all components at the same time
- AISIN's kit includes OE matched components, just like the ones your vehicle left the assembly line with - no generic parts here, just the brand names you know and trust - AISIN, Mitsuboshi, Toyo, NTN, and more
- AISIN is the #1 OE manufacturer of water pumps in the world; each pump features an advanced diecast aluminum housing and premium internal components with carbon ceramic seals for superior durability
- Kit includes OE matched components: Water Pump, Timing Belt, Tensioner, Pulleys, Gasket, Bolt, and Installation Instructions - all packed in one convenient box, ready to install
Set and verify belt tension carefully
The available manual material includes two forms of tension check, but the figures are source-specific rather than universal G4ED specifications. One method applies approximately 49 N (11 lbf) horizontally to the tensioner and the belt’s tension side; it describes the belt cog end as roughly half the tensioner mounting-bolt head radius from the bolt-head center. Another method measures the free-vibration frequency at the middle of the tension-side span and lists 70.4–87.9 Hz for the belt specifications stated in that manual.
The sonic-gauge excerpt says to rotate the crankshaft clockwise to No. 1 TDC, then turn it counterclockwise 90 degrees before measuring. The same manual material warns against counterclockwise crankshaft rotation, so the excerpts conflict. Do not infer a safe direction or reconcile those steps by guesswork: use the complete, vehicle-specific factory procedure and its illustrations before carrying out either measurement method. Rotate the engine and recheck alignment
After tension is set, the described procedure calls for turning the crankshaft two turns in the operating direction, then checking that the crankshaft and camshaft marks realign and that belt tension remains correct. The manual warns: “Avoid rotating the crankshaft in a counter clockwise direction. Engine damage could occur.” Treat that warning as manual text whose applicability must be confirmed for the exact vehicle; the separate counterclockwise instruction in the sonic-gauge excerpt makes it especially important to consult the full applicable procedure before turning the engine.

G4ED alone is not enough to confirm a timing-belt kit or specification. Check the vehicle’s year, market and engine variant against reliable parts and service information. For a belt kit, verify which belt, idler and tensioner components are included and whether the vehicle procedure calls for other replacement items. The available sources do not establish a universal kit or part number, nor do they verify any particular retailer listing.
