If your Kawasaki FH500V runs only with the choke on, treat that as a clue to investigate fuel delivery and the engine’s air-fuel mixture—not proof that a particular jet is clogged. Check when the engine stalls, confirm its full specification, and use the matching Kawasaki service information before cleaning or replacing parts.
What the choke symptom can tell you
A choke changes the mixture supplied to the engine. Needing it to keep running suggests the engine may not be getting its normal fuel-air mixture, but that symptom alone does not identify the cause. Kawasaki’s service material distinguishes the carburetor’s pilot circuit, which meters fuel and air at idle and light load, from its main circuit, which serves moderate to heavy load. That distinction can help frame an inspection; it is not a published fault diagnosis for every FH500V that stalls with the choke off. Kawasaki service-manual material on fuel circuits
Note exactly when it stalls
Before changing settings or removing parts, observe the conditions. The operating range can help narrow what a mechanic should inspect, but the following are diagnostic questions rather than a Kawasaki-published troubleshooting sequence:
- Immediately as the choke opens: Note whether the engine stops at once or runs briefly first.
- At idle only: Record whether it stays running when the throttle is opened slightly.
- Under load: Note whether it idles with the choke off but stalls when the equipment is working.
- After warming up: Record how long it runs before the symptom begins and whether the choke changes the result.
These observations are more useful than assuming a blocked jet or ordering a carburetor based on the symptom alone. The available evidence does not establish whether this particular engine has stale fuel, a restricted filter or passage, an intake leak, or another fault.

Check the engine identity before ordering parts
“FH500V” alone may not be enough to identify the correct carburetor or service parts. Kawasaki’s official download page lists multiple FH500V parts catalogues and instructs users to confirm the correct specification. Find the full model or specification code and serial information on the engine or equipment identification label, then match them to Kawasaki’s catalogue and service information. Do not choose a carburetor, jet, or rebuild kit solely because a listing says it fits an FH500V. The correct part depends on the engine’s specification.

Use care if servicing the carburetor
Kawasaki’s Quick Reference Guide covers carburetor disassembly and assembly for the FH451V, FH500V, and FH531V. It says: “There are several passage plugs (Ball plugs) in the carburetor body. Do not remove them.” The guide also directs technicians to mark choke and throttle valve orientation before disassembly and warns against bending the linkage during installation. Follow the guide that matches the engine specification rather than treating disassembly as a simple adjustment. Kawasaki Quick Reference Guide
Check the fuel shut-off solenoid only if fitted
The service-manual material describes a fuel shut-off solenoid on electric-starter models: it opens in RUN and closes the fuel supply in OFF. First confirm that your engine has an electric starter and the relevant solenoid; do not assume every FH500V has this equipment. If fitted, use the specification-matched manual to check its operation. Service-manual material on the fuel shut-off solenoid

When to get help
If you cannot identify the exact engine specification, lack the correct service information, or are unsure how to reassemble the carburetor without damaging its passages or linkage, have a small-engine mechanic inspect it. Provide the mechanic with the full model/specification and serial details, and describe whether the stall occurs at idle, under load, immediately after opening the choke, or only after warming up.
