The announced North American JuiceBox service shutdown was scheduled for October 11, 2024—not an upcoming event. As of October 8, 2026, the available official records establish that Enel X Way North America planned to cease operations, but do not establish whether a successor now supports JuiceBox apps or cloud features. Enel X said a charger that loses data connectivity will continue charging at its previously selected current; that does not guarantee continued app access, scheduling, or monitoring.
What happened to JuiceBox connectivity?
On October 2, 2024, Enel X Way North America communicated that it would cease operations in the United States and Canada effective October 11, 2024. In its opening record for Preliminary Evaluation PE24028, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) said the closure could affect the charging app and supporting software. NHTSA’s PE24028 opening resume documents the announcement; it does not establish the current status of any North American app or cloud service.
Enel X Way USA’s assets were transferred to an assignee for liquidation on October 11, 2024, according to an asset-assignment notice on the JuiceBox North America domain. That legal record does not identify a current cloud-service operator. Because no current successor-service status is established here, owners should not assume either that connected features still work or that every feature has definitively disappeared.
Will a JuiceBox still charge without Wi-Fi?
Enel X’s official connectivity FAQ says that when data connectivity is lost, the JuiceBox continues operating and charging at the current value previously set in JuiceNet Dashboard or the JuicePass App. The statement addresses charging at that selected current; it does not promise that the app, cloud connection, schedule, energy limits, or remote controls will continue working.

The FAQ is published on Enel X’s Nordics support site. It is evidence of the company’s stated offline behavior, not confirmation of current North American service or identical behavior across every model and software version. If you rely on scheduled charging or a current limit, check the behavior of your particular unit rather than assuming an offline charger will follow the same routine as when connected.
Which features depend on connectivity?
The February 2023 JuiceBox 40 datasheet lists app and web control, scheduled charging, charging measurement, and Wi-Fi status indication among its connected features. The JuiceBox 40 is a residential Level 2 charger; the datasheet specifies a maximum of 40 A, 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi, and a J1772 output connector. It also lists plug-in versions with NEMA 14-50 or 6-50 plugs and a hardwire pigtail.
Rank #2
- WORKS WITH EVERY NON-TESLA EV: Standard J1772 connector plugs straight into Ford, Chevrolet, Hyundai, Kia, Nissan, BMW, Volkswagen, Audi, Rivian, Lucid and every other EV or plug-in hybrid sold with a J1772 port - no adapter needed. Tesla drivers can charge too, using the J1772 adapter that comes with the car.
- PLUG IN, NO HARDWIRING: Level 2 charger delivers up to 40A to fully charge most EVs overnight. Plugs into a 240V, 4-prong NEMA 14-50 outlet (the RV/range type - NOT a dryer outlet) on a dedicated 50A circuit. The extra-long 25 ft cable easily reaches across a garage or driveway. Before ordering, check your car's port type and that you have the right outlet.
- CONTROL & SAVE FROM YOUR PHONE: A stronger built-in antenna keeps the charger online even in a garage or basement. Use the free app to start/stop charging, set speed (6-40A), get reminders, and track energy use and cost. Schedule off-peak overnight charging to cut your electric bill. Requires 2.4 GHz WiFi.
- SAFETY-CERTIFIED & WEATHERPROOF: Independently tested and certified (UL, ETL, FCC, Energy Star). A fully sealed IP66 / NEMA 4 housing stands up to rain, snow, heat and dust indoors or out, and internal steel shielding protects the electronics for years of reliable use.
- GLOW-IN-THE-DARK HOLSTER: The included high-visibility holster glows in the dark so you can find and dock the plug easily at night. Holds the connector securely when not in use.
Those product specifications help distinguish the charger’s connected controls from its basic charging function. Losing data service is not the same as losing power to the unit, but the official offline statement supports only continued charging at a previously selected current—not a guarantee about all settings, models, or connected features.
What should owners do?
- Check the charger itself. Note its model, whether it is plugged in or hardwired, and the vehicle connector. The JuiceBox 40 datasheet’s specifications do not establish the configuration of your individual installation.
- Review settings that matter to your routine. If you depend on app-based scheduling, remote controls, or monitoring, verify what the unit currently does when it is disconnected. Do not rely on historical pre-shutdown volunteer guidance as proof of present device behavior.
- Look for a current service notice before changing anything. The 2024 shutdown announcement and asset assignment do not say whether a successor restored app access or which models or functions it might support.
- Do not replace a functioning charger solely because of the 2024 announcement. Decide based on your charging needs, the unit’s observed behavior, and any installation or safety concerns.
Enel X also posted that it had identified and updated an issue involving maximum offline current settings. The support notice says some users with offline chargers and load-sharing or current-limit settings might need to reconnect to Wi-Fi to receive the update. It is a specific software notice, not general electrical installation advice.

Does the NHTSA investigation mean JuiceBoxes are unsafe?
No blanket conclusion follows from the opening record. NHTSA opened Preliminary Evaluation PE24028 on October 3, 2024, after complaints alleging electrical arcing and thermal events involving Enel X Way USA residential Level 2 chargers. The opening resume estimated a population of 180,000 and listed six complaints, seven total incidents, and three crash or fire incidents in its summary table. Those are recorded reports and counts, not a finding that every unit is defective or that the product caused each reported event.
Owners with a specific safety concern should treat it separately from the connectivity shutdown question and consult current official safety information for their charger. The opening evaluation alone does not determine whether an individual unit is safe or defective.

What to check before replacing a JuiceBox
If you decide to replace your charger, the JuiceBox 40’s documented options show why matching the replacement to the actual installation matters. Its datasheet lists plug-in and hardwired configurations, but it cannot tell you the capacity of your circuit or which replacement is appropriate for your home and vehicle.
- Confirm whether the existing unit is plug-in or hardwired, and identify the receptacle or wiring arrangement.
- Check the vehicle’s connector compatibility and the replacement charger’s connector.
- Match charger current to the installed circuit; the JuiceBox 40’s 40 A maximum is a product specification, not a statement about your circuit’s capacity.
- Decide whether you need scheduling or energy monitoring, and ask how those functions behave without cloud service.
A replacement choice may call for an electrician’s assessment, particularly when changing a hardwired installation or when circuit capacity is uncertain.
