A June preview promoted a two-day public programme for 29–30 October; the organiser’s later report describes the full three-day schedule, including Friday activities.
When was the Joondalup Festival of Motoring?
The inaugural festival took place from Friday 28 to Sunday 30 October 2022. The distinction between a two-day and three-day event reflects how the sources framed it: PerthNow’s June preview focused on the public programme planned for Saturday and Sunday, while the organiser’s post-event report counted a Friday corporate go-kart challenge and motoring movie marathon as part of the three-day series. The 2022 dates are historical, not an announcement of a future edition.
The preview described the event as free to attend. Neither it nor the organiser’s report confirms current ticketing, registration or merchandise availability.
What was on the programme?
Friday: corporate karting and a movie marathon
According to the organiser’s retrospective account, Friday’s activities included a PowerPlay corporate go-kart challenge and a motoring movie marathon.

Saturday: Coffee and Cars, displays and festival activities
The preview advertised Coffee and Cars, art and photography activities, an autokhana, food and entertainment, and an evening Cars and Cocktails gathering. The organiser’s report records Coffee & Cars and associated festival activities on Saturday, 29 October. Rain that day later featured in the organiser’s explanation of attendance.
Sunday: the Joondalup City Sprint and themed precincts
Sunday’s headline attraction was the Joondalup City Sprint, a street-course competition. The June preview described a planned 2.5-kilometre course and five themed display precincts: Route 66 (US), Old Blighty (UK), The Continent (Europe), The Orient (Asia) and Land Down Under (Australia). The organiser’s post-event report confirms that the sprint took place on Sunday, 30 October.
How did the car displays differ from the sprint?
The festival brought together two distinct ways to experience motoring. Static displays let visitors view a broad range of vehicles at their own pace; the sprint put competing cars on a timed street course. The preview forecast about 1,000 vehicles overall and 150 race cars. In its later report, the organiser said more than 1,000 cars were on static display and 150 cars competed in the inaugural sprint. These retrospective figures are the organiser’s, not independently audited counts.

The same report says a changed event date conflicted with several local and national motorsport events, affecting volunteer availability and attendance and display numbers. The organiser also said rain on Saturday, 29 October substantially reduced attendance, particularly among owners of classic or valuable cars. It identified attendee access and flow, signage, role clarity and coordination with the City as areas to improve. These are the organiser’s assessment of the event, not independent findings.
In the report, event director Justin Hunt wrote: “Overall, I feel that the Event concept is good, the vibe during the weekend was great, and our audience were satisfied.”

Why was the festival tied to Joondalup’s motorsport history?
Before the event, Joondalup Mayor Albert Jacob said the aim was to re-establish the city’s historic links to motorsport. Event director Justin Hunt described a broader ambition: “Our vision is for this event to be Perth’s biggest celebration of car culture and a major drawcard for the Joondalup area.” Those comments appeared in PerthNow’s preview on 3 June 2022; they describe the event’s stated goals, not proof that it achieved them.
The organiser’s report acknowledges the Whadjuk people of the Noongar nation as Traditional Custodians.
