Jeep dates the custom to summer 2020, when Allison Parliament left a duck on a parked Wrangler; Stellantis’s account says she wrote “Cool Jeep” on it and shared a photo online.
What Jeep ducking means
In Jeep ducking, one owner leaves a rubber duck on another Jeep, usually to compliment the vehicle or brighten its owner’s day. Jeep UK defines it simply as “placing a rubber duck on someone else’s Jeep®.” It is an optional community gesture, not a required tradition or a special Jeep accessory.

The duck can be an ordinary one. A handwritten card or short message is optional; themed or seasonal ducks are personal touches, not requirements.

Jeep UK places the beginning in summer 2020. Stellantis North America gives a more specific account: Allison Parliament had rubber ducks in her Wrangler when she spotted a lifted, customized Wrangler in a parking lot. She left a duck with “Cool Jeep” written on it and posted a photo with #duckduckJeep. Parliament recalled: “I saw a really nice Jeep Wrangler in the parking lot, it was tricked out and lifted. So I grabbed a duck, wrote ‘Cool Jeep’ on it and left it on the door,”

Stellantis reported that the photo received more than 2,000 Instagram likes on its first day. The two accounts agree on the 2020 origin and the basic gesture; they do not establish a more precise date or location. Parliament described the motivation simply: “A smile can change someone’s day.”
How to leave a duck on a Jeep
- Choose a small rubber duck. No particular brand, style, or specialized accessory is needed.
- Add a friendly note if you like. A brief compliment is enough; a note is optional.
- Place it where it is easy to notice and safe. Jeep Peru gives the hood, side mirror, or windshield as examples, while advising that the duck should not obstruct the driver’s view. Use judgment for the specific vehicle and placement.
- Share a photo only if you want to. Participants may post with #duckduckJeep, but posting is not necessary to take part.
Stellantis’s account says Parliament regarded any Jeep brand vehicle, new or old, as a possible recipient. The gesture is best kept considerate: leave the duck where it will not interfere with visibility or vehicle use, and do not assume every owner wants to participate.

How the custom spread—and what the old numbers mean
Social media and Jeep fan communities helped the practice travel beyond its initial parking-lot gesture. In an article published January 13, 2022, Stellantis reported more than 54,000 members in the Facebook group, more than 108,000 Instagram posts using #duckduckJeep, and more than 57,000 miles driven by Parliament since leaving the first duck. These are figures reported in that 2022 article, not current counts.

What happened to Allison Parliament?
The Duck Duck Jeep website says Allison Parliament died on June 22, 2024. The site names her mother, Cheryl Parliament, and her longtime partner, Jason, as the people entrusted with leadership of the movement afterward.
