NHTSA later expanded the recall: its November 4, 2025 alert covered 320,065 vehicles and reported 19 battery fires. If you own a Jeep Wrangler 4xe or Grand Cherokee 4xe, check the vehicle’s status by VIN and follow the current official instructions. NHTSA advised owners of affected, unrepaired vehicles to park outdoors, away from structures and other vehicles, and not to charge until the vehicle is remedied.
How the recall numbers changed
The original campaign and the later expansion have different vehicle populations, model years, and reported fire counts. The figures below are campaign totals in NHTSA alerts, not an estimate of an individual vehicle’s chance of catching fire.

The later campaign is not simply the original count restated: it added specified model years and more vehicles, and NHTSA reported additional fires. Its totals do not mean every listed Jeep has a defective battery. Coverage depends on the individual vehicle’s VIN.
What the battery problem is
NHTSA said the high-voltage battery could fail internally and cause a fire, including while the vehicle is parked or being driven. In its 2025 alert, the agency said separator damage in battery cells could lead to fire. The associated recall report said the earlier software remedy did not detect certain abnormalities that could lead to a fire. NHTSA recall 25V-741

The reported fire counts are not a usable personal risk estimate. NHTSA’s alerts provide campaign totals and reported incidents, but the cited information does not establish a probability for an individual Jeep or a comparable fire rate against other vehicles.
What Jeep 4xe owners should do
- Check the VIN. Use NHTSA’s recall lookup to see whether your specific vehicle has an open recall. A model name and year alone cannot confirm inclusion.
- Follow the latest notice for that VIN. If the recall is open, contact Jeep/Mopar or an authorized Jeep dealer for the instructions and remedy status that apply to your vehicle. NHTSA says open recall repairs at a manufacturer dealership are free.
- Take the interim precautions if your vehicle is affected and unrepaired. NHTSA advised owners to park outdoors, away from structures and other vehicles, and not to charge until the remedy is completed. The agency said risk is higher when the battery is charged and reduced when depleted.
- Do not assume the earlier repair closes the later recall. NHTSA specifically told owners who received the prior remedy to check whether their vehicle is included in the expanded campaign and follow its instructions.
The October 2024 alert described a software update to the battery pack control module, a dealer inspection, and battery replacement if necessary. That earlier process should not be treated as proof that the vehicle is clear of the expanded 2025 campaign: NHTSA reported fires in vehicles that had received the earlier software remedy.

Is the expanded recall repair available now?
NHTSA’s November 4, 2025 alert said the remedy for the expanded campaign was still being developed. That is a dated status, not confirmation of availability in October 2026. Check the VIN lookup and contact Jeep or an authorized dealer for the current remedy status before deciding how to use or charge an affected vehicle.
