Jason Oppenheim, founder of The Oppenheim Group, said he gave his Bentley to his father and plans to get Tesla vehicles equipped with Full Self-Driving (FSD) for 10 employees. A Hindustan Times report published October 4, 2026, describes the employee cars as a plan; it does not confirm they were bought or delivered. Oppenheim praised the technology as “life-changing,” but Tesla says its current product, FSD (Supervised), is not autonomous and requires an attentive driver.
What Oppenheim said he was doing
In an Instagram video described by Hindustan Times, Oppenheim used FSD during a drive from Newport Beach to his Los Angeles office. He said he had given his Bentley to his father and did not expect to drive it himself. He also said: “I’m going to get all 10 of my employees a Tesla with full self-driving capability.”
That is a stated intention, not confirmation that Oppenheim purchased or handed over 10 Teslas. The report establishes what he said, not whether the plan was later completed.
What “life-changing” means in this story
The “life-changing” description is Oppenheim’s praise of the driving feature, based on his own experience. It is not an independent finding about the system’s safety. Hindustan Times also reported his statements that FSD was “eight times safer than the average driver” and “25 times safer than the average distracted driver.” Those multipliers are attributed to Oppenheim; the report does not provide supporting methodology that independently validates them.

Oppenheim also cited an annual figure of around 40,000 traffic deaths. Because the report does not identify the original statistical source or specify a year for that number, it should be treated as his statement rather than a verified current annual total.
Is Tesla Full Self-Driving actually self-driving?
Tesla’s current name for the product is Full Self-Driving (FSD) (Supervised). Tesla says it can perform driving tasks such as lane changes, route choices, turns and parking, but it also explicitly says the feature does not make a vehicle autonomous. The driver must actively supervise it, pay attention and remain responsible for controlling the vehicle.

That distinction matters: “Full Self-Driving” is the product name, not permission to stop monitoring the road or to treat the car as driverless. Tesla’s description of FSD (Supervised) requires the driver to remain engaged.
What regulators have said about supervision
NHTSA’s Office of Defects Investigation described its preliminary evaluation of systems labeled “FSD (Supervised)” and “FSD (Beta)” as a review of a Level 2 partial-automation system. Its notice says the driver must remain attentive, supervise the system and intervene when necessary, while retaining responsibility for driving and obeying traffic laws.

The notice is relevant context for the supervision requirement, not a final finding or a statement about the investigation’s current resolution. It also does not establish that FSD is safer than a human driver.

Oppenheim’s personal praise, his safety multipliers and Tesla’s own safety messaging are different kinds of claims. Tesla separately advertises fewer collisions when FSD is engaged, but its cited support page does not provide a dated comparison in the material reported here. That company claim should not be treated as independent confirmation of Oppenheim’s specific “eight times” or “25 times” figures.

None of those points changes the practical requirement for the driver: monitor the road, supervise the assistance system and be ready to take control.
