Ultraviolette Automotive chose to develop premium, high-performance electric motorcycles before pursuing more affordable products. Chief Product Officer Vinayak Bhat says the approach was intended to build an aspirational Indian brand while forcing the company to solve demanding range and power challenges early. It is a rationale for Ultraviolette’s strategy—not proof that premium-first is the best route for every vehicle maker.
Why did Ultraviolette start with premium electric motorcycles?
In an October 10, 2026 interview with Electrive, Bhat described two goals behind the premium-first approach. It does not mean that Ultraviolette has already made every lower-priced segment accessible. Bhat’s account describes a direction: establish the brand and develop core technology first, then use that foundation across products with different purposes and levels of accessibility.

Why tackle range and power challenges first?
Bhat says that designing for high range and power makes engineering substantially harder. His argument is that once a company has addressed those demanding requirements, it can scale its technology down more easily than it can start with a basic product and later create a credible premium one.
He points to the F77’s battery and powertrain as examples of the engineering foundation. In the interview, Bhat says the F77 has a range of more than 300 kilometres, but the article does not specify a test cycle or provide independent validation. Treat that figure as his reported claim, not as a range result that can be compared directly with figures measured under a different standard.
The company’s work also reflects the demands of use beyond its home market, according to Bhat. He says European customers’ sustained high-speed riding exposed thermal constraints, while cold-weather use provided battery data that informed software, thermal management, cell balancing and longevity work. The interview reports these as company learnings without supplying independent measurements.

How do shared platforms support a wider range?
Rather than developing every motorcycle from scratch, Bhat says Ultraviolette uses a common platform as a basis for multiple products. He describes the X47 and SuperStreet as using the F77 platform. That reuse can provide a technological starting point for different models, although it does not by itself establish that products will have the same price, performance or market reach.
Bhat also discussed a next-generation 100-volt platform intended to span scooters through powerful motorcycles. The company is developing platforms in parallel with individual products, according to the interview. What do the F77 and F99 figures tell buyers?
They illustrate the performance-led positioning Bhat described, but they are not all the same kind of evidence. Does a premium-first strategy guarantee a successful mass-market expansion?
No. A premium product can establish a clear identity and give engineers demanding requirements to solve, but moving into more accessible segments still requires products that meet those buyers’ needs and can reach them at suitable prices. The interview explains why Bhat believes Ultraviolette’s sequence makes sense; it does not compare the company’s results with mass-market-first competitors or prove that the strategy will succeed.
Platforms may help the company extend its technology across motorcycles and scooters, while international riding experience may inform engineering changes. Neither point establishes the economics, sales volumes or timing of a broader rollout. Those outcomes remain dependent on products and plans that were still developing at the time of the interview.
