The project appears to be aimed at the Ford Maverick and Hyundai Santa Cruz, and Toyota executives have described a RAV4-based pickup as a possible opportunity. There is still no official name, reveal date, price, engine specification, or production schedule.
What Toyota has confirmed
Toyota has acknowledged that it is developing a pickup positioned below the Tacoma. In a 2025 interview, Toyota North America product-planning chief Cooper Ericksen said decisions had been made and that the project was not a question of “if,” but when Toyota could fit it into production.
That is meaningful confirmation that Toyota is pursuing a smaller truck. It is not confirmation of a finished vehicle or a model called Stout.
In May 2026, Toyota North America CEO Tetsuo “Ted” Ogawa described a RAV4-based pickup as an opportunity for the company. He also said dealers were waiting for such a truck, while cautioning that development would take time.

Is the new Toyota pickup officially called Stout?
No. Toyota has not announced the Stout name for the upcoming truck.
The name entered the conversation because Toyota previously sold a compact pickup called the Stout, and automotive reports suggested that the company might revive a historic truck name. That suggestion was speculation, not a Toyota announcement.
Toyota’s current U.S. truck page lists the Tacoma, Tundra, 4Runner, Land Cruiser, and Sequoia. Stout appears as part of Toyota’s truck history, not as a current or announced model.
What was the original Toyota Stout?
The original Stout was a compact Toyota pickup sold in the United States from 1964 through 1969. It predates the modern Tacoma by several decades and was part of Toyota’s early push into the American truck market.
That history makes Stout a logical heritage name for a smaller pickup. However, a historical name appearing on Toyota’s website does not mean the name has been reserved or approved for the new vehicle. Until Toyota identifies the truck by name, “Stout” should be treated as a nickname used by enthusiasts and the media.

Is it Corolla-based or RAV4-based?
The earlier rumor described a possible Corolla-based or Corolla Cross-related unibody pickup. Reports from 2023 suggested a truck that could arrive around 2027 and challenge the Ford Maverick and Hyundai Santa Cruz.
The more recent information points instead to a RAV4-based design. If that description is accurate, the truck would likely use Toyota’s TNGA-K unibody architecture rather than the body-on-frame construction used by the Tacoma and Tundra.
That distinction matters. A unibody pickup would likely prioritize everyday usability, fuel economy, maneuverability, and purchase price over the heavy-duty towing and off-road hardware associated with a midsize truck.

What could power the Toyota compact pickup?
Toyota has not confirmed the truck’s engine, motor arrangement, battery size, drivetrain, or output.
A hybrid powertrain is plausible because the U.S.-market 2026 RAV4 is offered only with hybrid or plug-in-hybrid powertrains. The RAV4’s standard hybrid system produces up to 236 horsepower, depending on configuration, while the RAV4 plug-in hybrid is rated at 324 horsepower.

Those figures belong to the RAV4. They should not be treated as specifications for the pickup. A truck may require different cooling, gearing, suspension tuning, payload calibration, and battery packaging, even if it shares an engine family or platform with the SUV.
How would it differ from the Tacoma?
The smaller truck would probably be less capable than the Tacoma in conventional truck duties, but that does not necessarily make it a weaker product for its intended buyers.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteA RAV4-based pickup could offer a lower step-in height, better fuel economy, easier parking, and a more carlike ride. Those traits would suit buyers who need an open bed for home-improvement supplies, recreation gear, landscaping work, or occasional hauling rather than serious towing.
Its likely limitations are just as important. Toyota has not published:
- Maximum towing capacity
- Payload rating
- Bed length or bed width
- Ground clearance
- Four-wheel-drive or all-wheel-drive details
- Off-road equipment
- Fuel-economy or electric-range figures
Until those numbers are released, it is not possible to say whether the truck would be a genuine alternative to a Tacoma or primarily a lifestyle pickup competing with the Maverick and Santa Cruz.

Toyota’s comments indicate that production timing remains a challenge, not that a specific launch year has been locked in.
The same applies to price. Estimates near $30,000 would place the truck close to the Ford Maverick and give Toyota a strong entry point below the Tacoma, but Toyota has not announced an MSRP. A hybrid-only lineup, higher equipment levels, or a plug-in-hybrid option could push the price well above that figure.

What to watch for next
The most important future announcement will be Toyota’s confirmation of the truck’s production program and name. After that, the details that will determine its position in the market are the platform, bed dimensions, payload, towing rating, hybrid system, and whether all-wheel drive is standard or optional.
Toyota may also clarify whether the truck will be sold in the United States alongside the RAV4 or built as a separate vehicle at another North American plant. Those manufacturing and packaging decisions will affect availability, pricing, and how closely the final product resembles the current SUV.
FAQ
Is Toyota definitely bringing back the Stout?
Toyota is developing a smaller pickup for North America, but it has not confirmed that the truck will be called Stout. The name remains speculation based on Toyota’s past compact pickup.
Will the new Toyota pickup be based on the RAV4?
Recent comments from Toyota’s North American CEO describe a RAV4-based pickup as an opportunity. Toyota has not released a complete technical description or confirmed that the truck will use the RAV4’s exact platform, engines, or battery system.
When will the new Toyota compact pickup go on sale?
There is no official reveal date, model year, production date, or on-sale date. A 2027 launch has been reported by some outlets, but it is an estimate rather than a Toyota commitment.
How much will the Toyota Stout cost?
Toyota has not announced pricing. Reports suggesting a starting price near $30,000 are projections based on the truck’s expected competition with the Ford Maverick and Hyundai Santa Cruz.
The Bottom Line
Toyota is pursuing a compact pickup below the Tacoma, and the latest information points toward a RAV4-based unibody truck for North America. That makes the project more credible than the old Corolla-pickup rumor, but the vehicle is still officially unnamed. Calling it the “Toyota Stout” is convenient shorthand for a possible heritage-name revival—not confirmation that Toyota is bringing back the Stout badge.
