Some Volkswagen Phaeton W12s are advertised for less than €10,000 in Germany, making the discontinued flagship look like a remarkable bargain. But those are asking prices, not completed-sale values—and they say nothing by themselves about the cost of owning a particular car. The latest dated snapshot available here is from September 14, 2026, not 2025.
What is the Volkswagen Phaeton W12?
The Phaeton was Volkswagen’s premium saloon, positioned as a luxury flagship. Volkswagen UK dates the W12 range to 2003–2011 and lists a 6.0-litre engine producing up to 440 bhp, with 0–62 mph in 6.1 seconds and an electronically limited top speed of 155 mph. Volkswagen España’s historical technical information gives the displacement as 5,998 cc. Specifications can vary by model year and market, so check the details of the individual car rather than assuming every W12 has identical output.
Volkswagen UK describes the broader Phaeton as largely hand-built. That helps explain its original premium positioning, but it is manufacturer framing—not an independent assessment of a used example’s condition or value.
What do Phaeton W12s cost?
On September 14, 2026, German marketplace mobile.de displayed an indicative “good price” range of €8,875–€19,445 for the Phaeton W12 and showed 11 used listings. This is a marketplace estimate and a snapshot of asking prices, not a national average or a record of completed sales.

| Example listing on mobile.de | Asking price | Year and mileage | Listed output |
|---|---|---|---|
| Used Phaeton W12 | €8,300 | 2003; 291,000 km | 309 kW (420 hp) |
| Used Phaeton W12 | €9,450 | 2007; 181,309 km | 331 kW (450 hp) |
| Used Phaeton Individual W12 | €20,000 | 2008; 260,000 km | Not stated in the listing details cited |
These examples were listed on mobile.de as of September 14, 2026; prices and listing details may change. The figures show that some German asking prices are low relative to the Phaeton’s original luxury positioning. They do not establish what a buyer will pay, whether a car is fairly priced, or what it will cost to put right.
Does a low asking price make it a steal?
Only if “steal” means a low purchase price for a rare, formerly flagship Volkswagen. The available figures do not support calling the Phaeton W12 inexpensive to own. They include no completed-sale study, typical repair-cost estimate, or model-specific reliability statistic, so a low listing price cannot be translated into a dependable total-cost calculation.

For a specific car, compare its model year and market specification, mileage, location, documented condition, asking price, and the completeness and credibility of its service records. There is no evidence-based weighting formula here that can turn those factors into a universal fair-value figure.
What to check before buying
- Verify the exact car. Confirm its model year, market version, engine specification, mileage, and equipment against its documents and identification details; published W12 specifications vary by year and market.
- Review the service history. Ask for verifiable invoices and records rather than relying on a seller’s summary. An AUTO BILD article published August 31, 2026, described an €8,800 listing with 291,000 km and 309 kW (420 PS), but also contained an apparent inconsistency: it said a major Volkswagen service took place at 36,200 km in August 2026. Do not treat that service claim as verified without checking the underlying advertisement and records.
- Arrange a knowledgeable inspection. Have the individual car inspected by a technician familiar with the Phaeton and its W12 configuration. This is prudent buying guidance, not evidence of a particular failure rate or predictable repair bill.
- Check local service and parts access. Before committing, establish that qualified repair capability and any parts the car may need can be sourced where you live. Volkswagen’s general service guidance recommends certified technicians and Genuine VW Parts, but does not confirm local Phaeton W12 parts availability or quantify costs.
What the price snapshot can—and cannot—tell you
The mobile.de figures are useful as a dated view of German advertised prices. They are not a 2025 market observation, do not represent every country, and cannot prove that a particular car is a bargain after inspection and repairs. Volkswagen’s service pages likewise offer general guidance, not Phaeton-specific ownership-cost data. Treat each listing as a lead to investigate, not as a verdict on value.
