What the latest 2026 U.S. sales figures actually show
Toyota Motor North America published its September results on October 1, 2026. Lexus sold 29,837 vehicles in the United States that month, up 11.4% by volume year over year. The division sold 93,056 vehicles in the third quarter, up 1.6% year over year. Those are Lexus-wide figures, not RX sales figures. Toyota Motor North America’s September and third-quarter 2026 sales release does not establish a cumulative RX count or an RX ranking against rival SUVs.
Is the RX the best-selling luxury SUV this year?
The available official figures do not answer that question. They do not compare the RX with competing luxury SUVs over the same U.S. reporting period, and they do not identify a 2026 year-to-date RX leader. A defensible ranking would need model-level unit sales for the same market and dates, plus a consistent definition of the segment being compared. Lexus division growth alone cannot prove an RX sales lead.
What Lexus’s 2025 records say—and do not say
Lexus sold a record 370,260 vehicles in the United States in 2025, up 7.1%, according to Toyota Motor North America. The release names Lexus models that set best-ever annual records; the RX is not among them. The brand’s record therefore should not be described as an RX record. Toyota Motor Corporation reported 882,231 Lexus sales worldwide in 2025, equal to 104% of the previous year. North America recorded 408,070 Lexus sales, or 107.5% of the previous year, and the company named the RX alongside the NX and TX among core models leading regional sales. These global and regional results show the RX is part of Lexus’s broader sales picture; they do not give a U.S. RX total or a 2026 U.S. competitor ranking. How to interpret the sales claims
- “Lexus sales are up” refers to division-wide results when based on the September and third-quarter 2026 figures.
- “The RX is a core Lexus model in North America” reflects Toyota Motor Corporation’s description of regional sales, not a model-level ranking.
- “The RX is the best-selling luxury SUV” requires same-market, same-period model data that the cited figures do not provide.
Andrew Gilleland, senior vice president of Toyota Motor North America’s Automotive Operations Group, said in the September 2026 release, “Our third-quarter results reinforce a simple truth—customers want choices.” That is company commentary on its multi-path vehicle strategy, not an explanation of RX-specific sales performance.
