What makes the KTM 390 Enduro R an all-purpose dual-sport?
KTM introduced the 390 Enduro R for model year 2025 as a smaller member of its Enduro R family. The company positions it for dirt, mountain trails and urban riding, pairing a six-speed single-cylinder motorcycle with a 21-inch front and 18-inch rear spoke-wheel setup. That combination makes it a plausible choice for riders splitting time between pavement and unpaved routes, rather than a dedicated street commuter or a specialized competition enduro.
Engine figures depend on the market specification. KTM South Africa’s 2026 page lists a liquid-cooled 398.7 cm³ single-cylinder four-stroke producing 45 PS and 39 Nm. KTM India lists 398.63 cc, 46 PS at 8,500 rpm and 39 Nm at 6,500 rpm. These are region-specific published figures, not one number to apply to every version. Suspension and ground clearance
The South African 2026 specification lists 230 mm of travel at both ends and 272 mm of ground clearance. India’s specification page lists 200 mm front travel, 205 mm rear travel and 253 mm clearance. Bajaj Auto’s India launch announcement described the 200/205 mm version and said a 230/230 mm variant would be available soon. Seat height and weight
The international figures of 890 mm in South Africa and 892 mm unloaded in the owner’s manual make fit an important consideration, especially for shorter riders or anyone who frequently stops on uneven ground. India’s listed 860 mm saddle height is a distinct market specification. Likewise, 159 kg without fuel, 159.2 kg dry and 177 kg kerb refer to different stated weight bases; none should be treated as an apples-to-apples comparison without a common measurement convention.
How capable is it on pavement and trails?
The 21/18-inch spoke wheels provide a dirt-oriented format while remaining part of a road-and-trail package. KTM North America’s 2025 announcement highlights long-travel suspension, a TFT dashboard, selectable ride modes and the ability to switch off MTC and ABS. KTM India lists traction control, riding modes, switchable ABS and Quickshifter+. The 2025 owner’s manual specifies Metzeler Karoo 4 tires: 90/90 R21 front and 140/80 R18 rear, along with a 520 X-ring chain. It advises that replacement tires comply with local road-approval rules and recommends consulting a qualified tire dealer or authorized KTM dealer. The South Africa specification and owner’s manual list an approximately 9 L fuel tank. That modest capacity is documented, but it does not establish fuel economy or real-world range.
Is the 390 Enduro R the best choice for you?
It may fit riders who want
- A single road-legal motorcycle for urban riding and trail days.
- A 398.7 cm³-class single and a 21/18-inch wheel package.
- Long suspension travel in markets where the 230/230 mm version is specified.
- Selectable riding aids, including off-road-related settings where available.
Look closely at fit and use before buying
- Check the locally sold seat height and sit on the bike in riding gear. The cited 890–892 mm international figures are tall enough to matter at stops.
- Confirm whether your market’s version has 200/205 mm or 230/230 mm suspension travel and which electronics are included.
- Consider the type of dirt you ride and your comfort managing the bike’s mass. Published weights use different conventions and cannot substitute for handling the motorcycle in person.
- For frequent highway use, evaluate road comfort, wind exposure and service support locally; the cited specifications do not settle those ownership questions.
How does its price compare with other dual-sports?
Cycle News reported a U.S. base MSRP of $5,499 before taxes and fees in its July 2025 review. In that publication-era price context, it described the KTM as $149 above the Honda CRF300L and Kawasaki KLX300, and below the Suzuki DR-Z400S and DR-Z4S. Verdict: a strong all-rounder, not a proven universal winner
The KTM 390 Enduro R is a credible “best for riders who want it all” choice if that means a road-and-trail motorcycle with a larger single, dirt-capable wheel sizes and useful selectable electronics. The case is strongest for buyers whose local version and personal fit meet their needs. The tall international seat-height figures, differing regional suspension and weight specifications, and absence of a controlled head-to-head test make a blanket claim that it is the best middleweight dual-sport unjustified.
