The 2025 model pairs a 291-hp V6 with strong IIHS safety results; its trade-offs include fuel use and recalls or service campaigns buyers should verify by VIN. Kia now presents a separate 2027 generation, so 2025 specifications should not be carried forward to a new Telluride.

1. The 2025 model earned strong IIHS ratings
The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety names the 2025 Kia Telluride a Top Safety Pick+. Its listed evaluations include Good ratings for small overlap front, updated moderate overlap front and updated side crashworthiness tests, as well as headlights, standard pedestrian front crash prevention, seat-belt reminders and LATCH ease of use. These results apply to the 2025 model and the tests IIHS lists; check ratings for the specific model year you are considering.
2. The 2025 offers a conventional V6
Kia lists a 3.8-liter gasoline-direct-injection V6 across the 2025 trims, rated at 291 hp and 262 lb-ft of torque. That is a relevant advantage for shoppers who specifically want a gasoline V6 rather than a hybrid powertrain. It is a 2025 specification, not a description of the newer generation.
3. You can choose front- or all-wheel drive
Kia’s 2025 lineup lists both front-wheel drive (FWD) and all-wheel drive (AWD), with availability varying by trim. Compare the exact trim and drivetrain on the vehicle you are pricing: drivetrain choice affects both availability and the manufacturer’s fuel-economy estimate.

4. Kia advertises lengthy warranty coverage for the 2027 model
Kia’s current U.S. 2027 Telluride specifications page states a 10-year/100,000-mile powertrain limited warranty and a 5-year/60,000-mile basic limited warranty. These are Kia’s advertised terms, not a guarantee that every owner or used vehicle receives identical coverage. Review the warranty document for eligibility, exclusions and transfer terms, and confirm coverage for the specific vehicle.
5. It is a credible option if you are comparing three-row SUVs by configuration
The Telluride’s available drivetrains and trim-specific equipment give buyers options within the lineup. That flexibility is useful only if you compare like with like: model year, trim, drivetrain, safety results, warranty terms and the price of the actual vehicle. The evidence here does not establish that it is cheaper to own, more reliable long-term or a better value than every rival.

5 reasons to think twice before buying
1. The 2025 V6 uses more fuel than many efficiency-focused shoppers want
Kia’s manufacturer estimates for the 2025 Telluride are 22 mpg combined with FWD and 20 mpg combined with AWD. These are estimates, not a promise of real-world mileage, and the applicable figure depends on configuration. If fuel savings are a priority, compare a hybrid or another three-row alternative using equivalent model-year and EPA data rather than treating the 2025 figures as representative of the 2027 generation.
2. A large fire-risk recall covers many 2020–2024 Tellurides
In a July 9, 2026 alert, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) said Kia issued a park-outside recall affecting 462,869 model-year 2020–2024 Tellurides. The power-seat motor may overheat and catch fire. NHTSA said the vehicles had previously been recalled for the same issue and that the new remedy should be completed. The recall population does not mean every example remains unrepaired: check the VIN and obtain documentation that the required repair was completed. If an affected vehicle has not been repaired, follow the agency’s park-outside instruction until it is.

3. Certain 2025 vehicles have a separate power-seat recall
NHTSA report 26V105 concerns certain 2025 Tellurides equipped with power front seats and built from November 1, 2024, through August 8, 2025. It identifies 85,448 potentially involved vehicles and an estimated defect rate of 1%. Those figures describe the report’s population and estimate; they do not determine whether an individual vehicle is affected. Confirm status by VIN and ask for repair records.
4. Some 2020–2025 Tellurides are covered by an emissions campaign
Kia’s February 20, 2026 notice describes a voluntary emissions service campaign for some 2020–2025 Tellurides. Under certain conditions, engine calibrations may result in emissions above federal and California standards; the campaign calls for a free electronic control module (ECM) software update. This is a service campaign, not the safety recall described above. Ask a seller or Kia service department whether the update applies to the vehicle and request evidence of completion.

5. A new Telluride is not the same proposition as the 2025 model
Kia’s current official pages present the 2027 Telluride, including a hybrid. That makes the 2025 V6 output and fuel-economy estimates unsuitable as stand-ins for the newer generation. If you are shopping new, compare the 2027 powertrain, fuel economy, pricing and warranty using Kia’s current documentation for the specific version you are considering.

- Identify the model year and configuration. Confirm the year, trim, FWD or AWD, and any relevant seat equipment from the vehicle documentation.
- Check the VIN for open recalls. Pay particular attention to the applicable power-seat recall for 2020–2024 or certain 2025 vehicles. A recall population is not a substitute for a VIN-specific status check.
- Request repair documentation. Ask for records showing completion of applicable recall remedies, especially the park-outside fire-risk recall.
- Ask about the emissions update. Confirm whether the Kia campaign applies and whether the ECM update was completed; request a service record.
- Compare the exact vehicle’s fuel use, safety information and warranty. Use model-year-specific material and review warranty terms rather than assuming all years and owners have the same coverage.
- Compare the actual price and condition. The available evidence does not establish a universal ranking for depreciation, long-term repair costs or reliability, so evaluate the individual vehicle and its records.
How to decide whether the Telluride is right for you
The 2025 Telluride is worth shortlisting if you want its V6, value its IIHS results and have found a trim and drivetrain that fit your needs. It is a weaker fit if fuel economy is a leading priority or you are unwilling to verify recall and campaign status on a used example. For a new Telluride, assess the 2027 generation on its own specifications rather than extrapolating from 2025.
Before settling on a vehicle, compare model year and generation, drivetrain, fuel economy, seat and trim equipment, safety test year, warranty terms, campaign status and the out-the-door price. On a used Telluride, a clean VIN check and documented repairs matter more than a general claim that the model has been fixed.
