But the available evidence does not establish that the hybrid is “far better” overall—or verify the test implied by that claim. Fuel use, towing, off-road ability, price and equipment depend on the specific model and configuration.
Which Tacoma is the comparison about?
The V6 comparison is with an earlier-generation Tacoma, not the current gas-powered truck. Toyota’s fourth-generation gas Tacoma uses a 2.4-liter turbocharged four-cylinder i-FORCE engine, rated at up to 278 hp and 317 lb.-ft. of torque. The i-FORCE MAX is a different powertrain: a turbocharged 2.4-liter four-cylinder paired with an electric motor integrated into the eight-speed transmission.
Toyota Canada describes the hybrid system as using a 48-hp motor and a 1.87-kWh nickel-metal hydride battery. Toyota rates maximum system output at 326 hp and 465 lb.-ft. of torque. Those figures identify the powertrain’s maximum output; they do not show how a particular truck performs in a head-to-head test.
How much more torque does the hybrid have?
Toyota says the i-FORCE MAX delivers 75% more torque than the previous-generation V6 Tacoma. That is Toyota’s stated specification comparison, not an independently measured test result. The higher peak torque is a meaningful advantage on paper, but it does not by itself establish faster acceleration in every situation or greater capability in every configuration.

Toyota Canada says the electric motor delivers output at low engine speed and lists Tow/Haul mode as standard on its i-FORCE MAX vehicles. These details help explain the hybrid’s design and equipment; they are not proof that every hybrid Tacoma can tow more than every V6 Tacoma.
Does the hybrid use less fuel?
Fuel figures vary by market, grade and drivetrain, so Canadian consumption figures and U.S. MPG estimates should not be combined as though they came from one comparison. Toyota Canada’s 2024 figures for the i-FORCE MAX are:

For the U.S. 2025 lineup, Toyota’s model page lists estimated city/highway figures of 22/24 MPG for TRD Sport and TRD Off-Road i-FORCE MAX grades, and 23/24 MPG for the Limited i-FORCE MAX. These are manufacturer estimates, not controlled head-to-head results against a V6 Tacoma. The figures do not establish how much fuel a particular driver will save.

The test referenced in the headline is not identified here. The vehicles, trims, route, conditions and methods are unknown, as are any measured acceleration, fuel consumption, towing or off-road results. Without those details, the specifications support a torque advantage over the earlier V6 but not a broad verdict that the hybrid is better in every respect.

A fair buyer comparison needs the exact model years and configurations. For towing or payload, check the published rating for the specific truck; Toyota warns owners not to exceed its rated capacity. For off-road or everyday use, compare the actual equipment and tires as well as the powertrain. Price and availability also depend on grade, model year and market.

What to compare before choosing
- Powertrain: Distinguish the older V6 from the current gas i-FORCE turbo-four and the i-FORCE MAX hybrid.
- Fuel use: Compare the same market, model year, grade and drivetrain, and treat manufacturer estimates separately from observed results.
- Towing and payload: Use the ratings for the exact cab, bed, drivetrain and grade rather than inferring capacity from torque.
- Equipment: Check the individual truck’s tow, off-road and convenience features; availability varies by grade.
- Test claims: Look for the vehicles and methods behind any acceleration, fuel, towing or trail comparison before treating a broad conclusion as established.
