Yes. The Honda Prelude is back as a production sixth-generation hybrid sports coupe. Honda calls the North American car the 2026 Prelude, but the model’s return did not wait until calendar 2026: sales in Japan began September 5, 2025.
When does the new Honda Prelude come out?
The answer depends on the market. Honda announced Japanese-market sales beginning September 5, 2025. In North America, Honda identifies the car as a 2026 model. Those dates are compatible: a 2026 model-year vehicle can go on sale in 2025.
Honda’s announcements confirm a production vehicle, not merely a concept. The Japanese-market MSRP was ¥6,179,800, including Japan’s 10% consumption tax. Honda said insurance premiums, taxes other than consumption tax, and registration-related costs were excluded, and that dealerships set their actual selling prices. That Japanese price is not a U.S. MSRP; the cited U.S. materials do not establish one.
What is the 2026 Prelude like?
The returning Prelude is a front-wheel-drive hybrid coupe, not a conventional manual-transmission sports car. Honda pairs a 2.0-liter Atkinson-cycle gasoline engine with its two-motor hybrid system. Honda quotes 200 hp of combined system output and 232 lb.-ft. of traction-motor torque.

Is it a sports car or a practical coupe?
Honda presents the Prelude as both a sports coupe and a grand tourer. Its listed hardware includes adaptive dampers, a dual-axis strut front suspension, and Brembo four-piston aluminum front calipers. Honda also lists leather-trimmed heated front sport seats, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and an eight-speaker Bose audio system as standard equipment.
Its everyday-use details include two rear seating positions, folding rear seatbacks, and 15.1 cubic feet of cargo space. The 2+2 layout is useful for occasional passengers or extra storage, but it is not the same as a roomy four-door cabin.

How does the new Prelude compare with the old one?
The original Prelude entered production in November 1978, and the previous five-generation run continued through the 2001 model year, according to Honda. The new car is the sixth generation and the first electrified Prelude. Its biggest change is therefore not just a new body or a modernized cabin: the nameplate has returned with a hybrid powertrain and front-wheel drive.
How does it compare with the Toyota GR86?
The Prelude and Toyota GR86 serve different sports-coupe priorities. The Prelude combines hybrid efficiency, front-wheel drive, and more cargo capacity; the GR86 offers rear-wheel drive and an available manual transmission. An Associated Press-republished Edmunds comparison published August 26, 2026, described the GR86 as having more sporting character and praised the Prelude for comfort and practicality.
Rank #4
| Comparison point | Honda Prelude | Toyota GR86 |
|---|---|---|
| Powertrain and shifting | Two-motor hybrid; S+ Shift simulates stepped shifts | Conventional engine; manual transmission available |
| Drive layout | Front-wheel drive | Rear-wheel drive |
| Fuel economy | EPA-estimated 44 mpg combined | Not stated in the cited Edmunds comparison |
| Cargo volume | 15.1 cubic feet, per Honda’s 2026 specification guide | 6.3 cubic feet, as reported in the Edmunds comparison |
| 0–60 mph test | 7.2 seconds in Edmunds’ test | 6.0 seconds for the manual GR86 in Edmunds’ test |
The acceleration results are Edmunds test results, not universal performance guarantees. The comparison team also said it matched the Prelude’s 44-mpg EPA combined rating in its real-world driving; one team’s result does not predict every owner’s fuel economy. For a buyer choosing between them, the key question is whether hybrid efficiency, comfort, and cargo utility matter more than rear-drive dynamics and a conventional manual option.

Honda’s U.S. materials establish the 2026 model’s identity and specifications, while the Japanese announcement gives a Japan-specific price and launch date. They do not establish a U.S. MSRP or current dealer inventory. Do not use the Japanese MSRP or a currency conversion as a substitute for U.S. pricing; check Honda or a local dealer for current market availability and pricing.
