That is substantial depreciation, but it does not by itself make an i8 a bargain to own. The purchase estimate is not a guaranteed deal, and the available figures do not establish the car’s repair, maintenance, insurance, or battery-replacement costs.
How much is a used BMW i8?
Kelley Blue Book’s national fair-purchase estimates, accessed in 2026, put a typical 2020 BMW i8 below half its original MSRP for either body style. KBB describes these estimates as typical dealer purchase prices, updates them weekly, and cautions that an individual car’s price can vary with mileage, condition, location, and equipment. Treat them as a market reference, not a promised transaction price.

The percentages are arithmetic comparisons of the original MSRPs and KBB’s estimates; they are not percentages published by KBB. The Roadster had the higher original sticker and also has the higher current estimate in this comparison. These figures do not show that one body style is a better investment.
For another point of reference, KBB’s current snapshot for a 2016 i8 Coupe lists a $41,100 resale value and a $36,700 trade-in value. Those are different valuation types, and the cited figures do not include a comparable original MSRP; they cannot establish that model’s depreciation percentage.

How much has the BMW i8 depreciated?
The 2020 examples show a large gap between original MSRP and today’s estimated dealer purchase price. KBB’s separate depreciation page shows a 2020 resale value of $59,456 for 2025 and $57,900 in the snapshot accessed in 2026, with $1,556 listed as depreciation. KBB describes its depreciation figure as an estimate based on similar vehicles and market data, and states: “This is not a guarantee of actual depreciation.”
That short, dated comparison is not evidence of a dependable future resale floor. A buyer should not assume that the value will keep declining at the same rate—or stabilize at a particular price.

What kind of car is the BMW i8?
The i8 is a discontinued plug-in hybrid sports car, not a battery-only electric car. BMW says the Coupe and Roadster are no longer in production and describes the layout as a front electric motor paired with a 1.5-liter turbocharged gasoline engine over the rear axle. BMW also says the car can be driven without an electric charge because the gasoline engine runs on petrol. Its legacy i8 information describes the car’s carbon-fiber-reinforced body.
Those features explain what the i8 is, but they do not establish how much a particular example will cost to maintain or repair. The available sources do not quantify i8-specific maintenance, repair, insurance, or battery-replacement expenses.

What to check before buying a used i8
A large discount from MSRP is only one part of the purchase decision. Compare candidate cars using the same valuation basis, and have the individual vehicle assessed rather than relying on a national average.
- Compare Coupe with Coupe or Roadster with Roadster, and distinguish dealer asking or purchase prices from private-party, resale, and trade-in values.
- Check mileage, condition, equipment, and location: KBB identifies these as factors that can affect an individual price.
- Ask BMW to verify warranty coverage for the specific VIN, including the applicable market and model-specific terms, the vehicle’s original in-service date, and mileage.
- Review the service history and arrange an inspection by a qualified professional familiar with the vehicle.
Does the i8 battery warranty make a used one less risky?
BMW of North America’s current US warranty page gives high-voltage battery defect-warranty wording of 8 years or 100,000 miles from the vehicle’s in-service date, whichever occurs first. That general wording does not confirm that a particular used i8 remains covered; verify the VIN-specific, model-specific terms and the car’s in-service date and mileage with BMW.

BMW notes that high-voltage battery capacity decreases over time and with use. Its current warranty materials also discuss capacity coverage for newer certified electric vehicles; those separate terms should not be assumed to apply to an i8. BMW’s current warranty booklet says high-voltage battery repairs should be handled by authorized BMW centers, but that current general guidance does not establish that an individual i8 still has active coverage.
