For a small household that rarely carries rear passengers or much luggage, the 2026 three-door Mahindra Thar OG can work as a daily car. As the only family vehicle for regular trips with children, older relatives or bags, it is a poor fit: the rear seat is for two, access takes extra effort, and the boot is limited when all seats are in use. The “OG” here means Mahindra’s three-door Thar launched in September 2026—not the five-door Thar ROXX.
What the Thar OG offers—and what it does not
The Thar OG is a three-door, four-seat SUV, not a conventional five-seat family vehicle. Autocar India describes the rear bench as a two-seater, so households needing three people across the back should rule it out. Mahindra introduced the model with upgrades to the platform, rear suspension, damping and electric power steering, and says these improve ride refinement. Those are manufacturer claims, not a substitute for living with the vehicle over time. In its first-drive review, Autocar India found sharp, low-speed bumps less harsh than before, while noting that a bad bump can still toss occupants around.
Can family members use the rear seat comfortably?
Getting into the back is a daily-use compromise. Passengers must enter through the front-door openings, with the front seats moved to make room. Mahindra’s own Thar OG versus Thar ROXX comparison acknowledges that rear entry and exit take more effort in the three-door model.

That matters most if you regularly buckle in children, help older relatives into the car, or make frequent trips with rear passengers. Mahindra lists rear AC vents and a soft second-row armrest, which improve amenities once passengers are seated; they do not make entry easier or add a third rear seat.
Is there enough room for family luggage?
Luggage is the other major limitation. Autocar India says the boot is inadequate for long trips or airport runs unless the second row is folded. Folding it creates a direct trade-off: more cargo room means fewer passenger seats. No authoritative boot-volume figure was established in the cited sources, so judge the space by loading your own bags rather than relying on an assumed capacity.

For a family that often travels with a stroller, several suitcases or shopping alongside rear passengers, test the actual load with the seats in use before deciding. A short everyday trip with little cargo is a different proposition from a full family holiday.

Which equipment and safety details depend on the trim?
Convenience and safety equipment varies by variant. Mahindra lists items such as a rear-view camera, front parking sensors and six airbags total on the ZXT feature set; lower variants have different equipment. The launch specification and variant details are in Mahindra’s launch announcement. Check the current official list for the exact trim you are considering rather than assuming every OG has the same features.

An equipment list is not a crash-test result. The cited material does not establish an independent crash-test rating specifically for the 2026 Thar OG, so no star rating should be inferred from the number of airbags or other listed features.

Mahindra positions the five-door Thar ROXX as the in-brand alternative for buyers who need easier rear access and more luggage space. Its comparison guidance is a useful starting point, but test the exact models and variants with your own passengers and cargo.
