The 2025 KTM 390 SMC R made a strong case on its original U.S. price and equipment: RevZilla reported a $5,499 MSRP, a claimed 45 hp, adjustable suspension and several electronic riding aids. That launch price is historical, not a current quote. Whether the bike is worth buying now depends on its local asking price, your fit on a 33.9-inch seat, and your confidence in the dealer and parts support available where you live.
What the 2025 KTM 390 SMC R offers
The 390 SMC R is KTM’s small-capacity supermoto, not the larger and substantially more expensive 690 SMC R. Its 398.7 cc liquid-cooled single is listed with claimed output of 45 hp at 8,500 rpm and 28.7 lb-ft at 7,000 rpm, paired with a six-speed gearbox and chain final drive. These are published specifications, not independent test results. RevZilla’s January 15, 2025 first look reported the figures.
Suspension and equipment
RevZilla reported a 43 mm WP APEX inverted fork and monoshock with about 9.05 inches of travel. The fork has compression and rebound adjustment; the shock has rebound adjustment. The reported package also includes 17-inch wire-spoke wheels, Michelin tires, ByBre brakes, and a 4.2-inch TFT with phone-connectivity features through KTM Connect.
Electronic features include Road and Sport ride modes, switchable traction control, and two-channel ABS with Standard, Supermoto and Supermoto+ settings; rear ABS can be switched off. Verify the specifications on the specific bike and in your market, since equipment can vary by country or individual model.

Fit, fuel and weight
The reported seat height is 33.9 inches, which can make a test sit especially important for riders who prefer to place both feet securely on the ground. RevZilla lists fuel capacity at 2.37 U.S. gallons and claimed weight at 339 pounds without fuel. That weight is not a ready-to-ride figure, so it should not be compared directly with wet weights for other motorcycles.
Was the launch price competitive?
At its introduction, the 390 SMC R’s reported $5,499 U.S. MSRP looked aggressive against some small-bore supermoto alternatives. RevZilla’s January 17, 2025 comparison listed the 2025 Kawasaki KLX300SM at $5,849 and the final-year 2024 Suzuki DR-Z400SM at $7,899. At that time, the 2025 Suzuki DR-Z4SM price had not been announced. These are dated list prices, not current dealer quotes or a like-for-like statement about performance and ownership cost. For a purchase today, compare actual local quotes rather than relying on launch MSRP. Ask for the out-the-door total, including freight, setup, documentation charges and taxes, and check whether a quoted bike is new, used, discounted or leftover inventory. Also compare model years and condition: a lower sticker price on an older motorcycle is not directly equivalent to a new 2025 bike.

The 690 SMC R is not a direct substitute simply because it shares the KTM supermoto name. RevZilla’s January 2025 price comparison cited historical U.S. figures of $12,999 for the 2024 690 SMC R and $12,499 for the 2024 990 Duke, alongside the 390 SMC R’s reported $5,499 launch MSRP. Those figures refer to different models and model years, not current prices.
What buyers should verify before purchasing
The published launch coverage does not establish current inventory, transaction prices, ownership costs or a long-term reliability record for the 2025 390 SMC R. KTM support concerns also appeared in RevZilla’s February 2025 coverage of the brand; the article asked, “Will KTM close shop? Will there be parts support for this bike in five years?” Those were questions reflecting buyer uncertainty at the time, not evidence of a current corporate outcome. The February 2025 discussion does not settle today’s support outlook.

- Get a written, itemized out-the-door quote and compare it with other local options.
- Ask the selling dealer about warranty coverage, scheduled service, parts access and who will perform warranty work.
- Check dealer status and parts availability in your area rather than assuming national conditions apply locally.
- Test sit or ride where permitted, paying particular attention to seat height, control reach and low-speed confidence.
Who is it a good fit for?
The 390 SMC R deserves consideration if you want a small-capacity supermoto with a notably equipped published specification and you find a local price that makes sense. It is less compelling if the seat height is uncomfortable, the dealer network near you is weak, or the seller’s price no longer compares favorably with available alternatives. The cited material offers no measured reliability rate or independent performance test, so neither should be treated as established proof for or against the KTM.
