No public announcement says Oscar Piastri is leaving McLaren or that Max Verstappen will replace him. The replacement story is speculation, while Piastri, his manager Mark Webber, McLaren CEO Zak Brown and Team Principal Andrea Stella have all publicly pushed back on claims that Piastri is trying to quit or that McLaren is preparing to replace him.
Is Oscar Piastri leaving McLaren?
The public comments reported in July 2026 point the other way. On July 16, Piastri said he expected to remain with McLaren the following season and described himself as happy with the team. He said he trusted Brown and Stella and appreciated the team’s belief and support, according to Formula1.com.
That is Piastri’s stated expectation, not a guarantee of a future line-up. The reviewed public material contains no announcement of a departure, but it also does not disclose every contractual term or rule out private conversations.
Who is supposedly replacing him?
The replacement rumour centres on Max Verstappen joining McLaren. It has also been framed as Piastri potentially moving to Red Bull, but the reported speculation is not evidence that either driver has agreed to a transfer.

The distinction matters: a question raised in the paddock or online is not a team announcement. The FIA transcript of the Friday press conference at the 2026 Canadian Grand Prix records a question about reports of Piastri going to Red Bull. Stella responded that McLaren was very happy with Piastri and wanted stability; the exchange establishes that the rumour was being discussed, not that a negotiation had occurred (FIA transcript).
What do Piastri, Webber and McLaren say?
Piastri says he has a contract and reassurance
On July 3, Piastri told Formula1.com that he had a contract, had received multiple reassurances from McLaren, and was happy with the team. Formula1.com reported that the deal ran at least through the end of 2027; its exact terms are not public in the cited material (Formula1.com).

Webber rejects claims that Piastri wants out
Piastri’s manager, Mark Webber, rejected the idea that his driver was trying to leave. Formula1.com reported Webber’s response on July 10, and RACER quoted him calling talk of Piastri “agitating to leave” nonsense (Formula1.com; RACER).
Brown says McLaren has its drivers
RACER reported Brown saying he was happy with Lando Norris and Piastri, that McLaren had its two drivers, and that there was no seat to offer Verstappen. These are Brown’s public comments as reported by RACER, not proof of what may or may not have been discussed privately (RACER).

Stella backs stability
At the Canadian Grand Prix press conference, Stella said McLaren “couldn’t be happier” with Piastri and described stability as the team’s direction. That public position is consistent with the team backing its current driver, rather than announcing a replacement plan (FIA transcript).
What is behind the quit rumours?
The public speculation appears to have mixed talk of Verstappen joining McLaren with the possibility of Piastri moving to Red Bull. RACER also reported that the online speculation intensified around teasers for Scott Dixon’s McLaren IndyCar switch, and that McLaren sources described the IndyCar announcement as the only announcement planned. That explanation is RACER’s reporting, not an independently confirmed account of every rumour’s origin (RACER).

There is also a firm contract backdrop, but it should not be mistaken for a transfer story. McLaren announced a multi-year Piastri extension on March 11, 2025, after an earlier extension made later in 2023 had been due to run through 2026. The 2025 announcement did not publish the precise end date. Piastri said he was proud to continue representing McLaren and wanted to fight for major titles with the team (McLaren). The at-least-through-2027 detail comes from Formula1.com’s July 3, 2026 report, not from that McLaren announcement.

Bottom line on the McLaren replacement story
As of the latest direct Piastri comments in the cited reports, dated July 16, 2026, the public evidence supports a rumour—not a confirmed replacement or a decision by Piastri to quit. Piastri expects to stay, his manager denies he is trying to leave, and McLaren’s senior figures have expressed support for him and stability. Developments after those July statements could change the picture; none of the cited reports proves what may have been discussed privately.
