Yes—home charging can work well for an electric SUV in Kerala if you have dependable access to a parking space near a safe charging point and your home’s approved electrical load and wiring can support the equipment. Kerala permits domestic EV charging outlets up to 8 kW under specified conditions, but that is not a guarantee that every home can install an 8 kW charger. Check the exact vehicle, property and current supply rules before choosing a charger.
What determines whether home charging will work?
Start with the parking arrangement, then check the home’s electrical capacity and the vehicle’s charging limits. A charger’s rated power alone does not determine how quickly an SUV will charge: the vehicle’s onboard AC charging limit, battery size, starting charge and the time the vehicle can remain connected all matter.

- Parking: You need regular access to a space where the vehicle can be connected safely. In an apartment or shared building, feasibility also depends on the building’s electrical arrangement, designated parking and required approvals.
- Electrical capacity: Compare the proposed charger capacity with the home’s approved connected load, not just the rating of an existing socket or the apparent capacity of the wiring.
- Vehicle compatibility: Confirm the SUV’s connector and maximum onboard AC charging rate against the charging equipment. Verify these for the specific model and variant.
- Routine: Home charging is most convenient when the SUV can stay connected for a predictable period during hours when charging is permitted and suitable for the household.
Kerala’s domestic charging rules and installation safety
Outlet capacity and approved connected load
Kerala’s Electricity Supply Code (Fifth Amendment), 2024, provides for a domestic EV charging outlet of up to 8 kW from the consumer installation. It generally says charger capacity must not exceed 50% of the consumer’s approved connected load. For an existing domestic consumer, the amendment says load enhancement is not required if charger capacity is less than 50% of approved connected load, but installation details must be provided to the licensee for information and monitoring. If charger capacity is more than 50%, connected load must be enhanced through the due procedure. Read the Kerala Electricity Supply Code (Fifth Amendment), 2024 and confirm how its provisions apply to your connection with KSEB or the relevant licensee.
Charging hours and tariff
The amendment says domestic EV charging outlets should not normally be operated from 6 p.m. to 11 p.m. It allows operation during peak time where the consumer opts for a time-of-day tariff. Confirm the tariff option and its current implementation with the licensee before planning a charging routine around it; the rule should not be treated as a universal off-peak price or a promise that a particular time band will reduce your bill.

Apartments and shared parking
For new multi-occupant buildings, the amendment addresses individual charging points near designated parking spaces and separately describes fast-charging outlets connected to common service installations. In an existing apartment, ask the association or building manager how parking, electrical supply, cable routing and approvals are handled. Owning a charger does not by itself establish that it can be connected to a shared building supply.
Use a suitable circuit; do not bridge the distance with an extension
Kerala Electrical Inspectorate guidance says not to use a cord extension set or a second supply lead to connect the vehicle. Have a qualified electrical professional assess the circuit, earthing, protection and cable route, and use equipment specified for the vehicle. If the parking place is too far from a suitable supply point, get a proper installation plan rather than relying on a household extension cord.

How to estimate the cost of charging at home
There is no single verified Kerala home-charging cost that applies to every electric SUV and household. Your bill depends on the energy used, the distance driven, the applicable household tariff and time band, and whether the calculation includes charging losses. BEE’s E-Mobility resources link to a tentative EV-versus-ICE ownership cost calculator and state tariff information, but the resource page does not establish a current Kerala domestic tariff amount.

Inputs for a useful comparison
- The SUV’s energy consumption in kWh per 100 km, using a clearly identified source or vehicle figure.
- Your expected annual kilometres or a representative monthly distance.
- Whether the estimate includes charging losses; state the assumption rather than treating battery energy and electricity drawn from the home as identical.
- Your household tariff slab and any applicable time-of-day tariff, checked for your connection and the date of the estimate.
- For a petrol or diesel comparison, the other vehicle’s real-world fuel consumption and the current fuel price, calculated over the same distance.
For a simple estimate, multiply the SUV’s stated kWh per 100 km by the distance in kilometres and divide by 100 to estimate energy used for that distance. Apply an explicit allowance for charging losses if your consumption figure does not already account for them, then use the applicable electricity tariff. Treat the result as an estimate based on those inputs, not a measured owner’s bill.

Installation costs need a site quote
The official material cited here does not establish a standard installation price for Kerala homes. A quote can depend on the distance from the distribution board, required circuit protection and cabling, earthing, any supply or load upgrade, parking layout and whether the property is independent or shared. Ask for a site-specific quote that identifies the work and equipment rather than relying on a statewide price assumption.

Do not use a generic charge-time estimate for “an electric SUV.” The time depends on the exact battery and starting charge, the vehicle’s maximum AC charging rate, the charger’s rating and the available household supply. The lower of the vehicle’s onboard AC limit and the supply/charger capability constrains the charging rate. Check the vehicle’s specifications and ask the installer to assess the supply before assuming a particular overnight routine will be enough.

For everyday use, consider whether your typical driving distance can be replenished during the hours the vehicle is parked and charging is allowed. If your schedule requires frequent rapid top-ups, or your parking access is uncertain, home charging may be less convenient even where installation is technically possible.
Home charging versus public charging for trips
Home charging can cover a regular routine, while public chargers can be part of the plan for longer journeys or when home access is unavailable. Kerala’s PM E-DRIVE portal identifies KSEBL as the state nodal agency for public charging-station proposals under the scheme. The scheme information presented by KSEBL describes a national outlay of ₹10,900 crore, including ₹2,000 crore for public EV charging stations; those figures concern the national scheme, not a confirmed subsidy for an individual home charger. Check public charging availability for the route and date you plan to travel rather than assuming a station will be convenient or operational. PM E-DRIVE portal
Pre-installation checklist
