Is Chery coming to the U.S.?
Chery is considering a U.S. entry at a “suitable” time, according to a May 20, 2026 Reuters report citing an executive overseeing its international business. The executive gave no timetable, and the report said the United States had not yet been added to Chery’s export destinations. That is expressed interest, not an announced launch plan. The available report excerpt identifies the executive only by the surname Zhang, so a fuller name or direct quotation cannot be established from it. There is no confirmed U.S. launch date, distribution channel, or manufacturing plan in the reporting cited here.
Is Chery state-owned?
The label “state-owned” is not established by the available company disclosures. Chery Automobile Co., Ltd. began trading on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange on September 25, 2025. Its IPO announcement said state-owned enterprises were among the cornerstone investors, while a Chery International privacy statement effective May 18, 2026 describes the automaker as a “private company with limited liability.” These facts do not, on their own, establish ultimate control or settle the extent of state influence. Why would a U.S. launch be difficult?
One significant issue is the Commerce Department’s connected-vehicle rule, published as a final rule in the Federal Register. It restricts imports and U.S. sales of certain completed connected vehicles incorporating covered software designed, developed, manufactured, or supplied by persons owned by, controlled by, or subject to the jurisdiction or direction of China or Russia. It also restricts manufacturers with those ties from knowingly selling completed connected vehicles that include covered vehicle-connectivity-system hardware or covered software. The rule is relevant to a potential Chery entry, but the cited material does not establish a Chery-specific legal determination or show that this is the only obstacle. Its application, operative provisions, and any authorizations or amendments should be checked against the current rule before drawing conclusions about a particular vehicle.

Tariffs are another time-sensitive consideration. Reuters described 100% tariffs on Chinese-made electric vehicles as part of the difficult U.S. environment for Chinese automakers, but that figure should not be treated as a current rate for every vehicle or import. Tariff treatment depends on applicable rules and should be verified against current official sources. Reuters, May 20, 2026
Chery’s international scale does not mean U.S. availability
Chery reported 943,817 vehicle exports in the first half of 2026, up 71.5% from the same period a year earlier, and 6.78 million overseas users by the end of June 2026. Those company-reported figures show substantial international activity, but they do not indicate that Chery vehicles are available in the United States or that a U.S. launch is imminent. What would need to be settled before Chery could sell cars in America?
No U.S. models or launch route have been confirmed. Any eventual entry would depend on details that have not been announced, including:
- Vehicle origin and production: where the cars are made and how that affects applicable trade rules.
- Connectivity systems: whether covered hardware or software is present and how the connected-vehicle rule applies.
- Ownership or control: how relevant company relationships are treated under the rule.
- Tariffs: which rates and other import measures apply at the time.
- Sales plan: whether Chery announces U.S. distribution, local production, or another route to market.
These are questions a future plan would have to answer, not routes Chery has announced.
