France is reportedly one of BYD’s leading candidates for another European assembly plant, alongside Spain. But the company has not confirmed a French site, signed a deal or announced a factory project there. The reports describe a possibility under consideration—not a commitment.
What is known about a possible BYD factory in France?
In September 2026, reports said France and Spain were the leading candidates for BYD’s next European assembly site, with Italy also mentioned as an option. BYD adviser Alfredo Altavilla reportedly said the company expected to decide by the end of 2026 and preferred acquiring and refurbishing an existing plant rather than building a new one. There is no confirmed French location or site agreement in those reports, and they do not establish that BYD has selected France. The distinction matters: being considered is not the same as being chosen, acquiring a plant, beginning construction or producing vehicles.
What has BYD said about its wider European manufacturing plans?
Altavilla’s reported longer-term view calls for three European assembly plants and one battery factory. That describes an eventual production footprint, not a published schedule identifying the locations or construction dates for all four facilities. He was quoted as saying: “À plus long terme, nous aurons besoin de trois usines d’assemblage et d’une usine de batteries.” In English: “In the longer term, we will need three assembly plants and one battery factory.” The quote was reported by Auto Plus; it was not issued as a BYD press release. BYD identified its Szeged facility in Hungary as its first European passenger-car factory in a June 2025 announcement. At the time, the company said the site was expected to be ready to start vehicle manufacturing by the end of 2025. That was a target stated in 2025, not confirmation of the plant’s present operating status. (BYD, June 24, 2025)
In a September 2025 interview, BYD executive vice-president Stella Li described plans to start Dolphin Surf production in Hungary by the end of that year, a second plant under construction in Türkiye with a late-2026 target, and a third plant still under consideration. Why might France be in the running?
The reports describe an acquisition-and-refurbishment approach, which would make the availability and suitability of an existing factory relevant. France and Spain are reported as the leading options, while Italy is also under consideration. The sources do not provide comparable site-level cost, incentive or workforce data, so they do not support a conclusion that one country is more attractive than another.
Factors that could matter in evaluating a site include the condition and cost of an existing plant, refurbishment time, local suppliers and workforce, operating costs, access to markets, and applicable European manufacturing and trade rules. These are decision factors, not reported reasons BYD has chosen France.
Does French EV policy confirm a BYD investment?
No. In a 2023 response to a question in the National Assembly, the French government said potential automotive investment decisions would be announced once effective. It also cited a national ambition to produce two million electric vehicles annually by 2030 and roughly €5 billion in France 2030 support for the automotive sector. Those figures describe broader policy and industry support; the response does not say that funding was offered to or earmarked for BYD. (French National Assembly, 2023)

A country being named as a candidate is an early-stage signal, not proof of a committed project. Confirmation would require an announcement or documentation identifying a chosen French site or a completed transaction, followed by evidence of construction, refurbishment or production as those stages occur. The September reports do not establish any of those steps.

BYD’s earlier French footprint figures also need dates attached. Le Monde reported that a BYD spokesperson cited 8,286 registrations through August 2025 and reported a target of 100 dealerships by the end of 2025. Those are historical, time-bounded figures; they do not establish current sales or dealership totals, and they are not evidence of a factory investment. (Le Monde, September 2025)
