Audi has not officially confirmed a production RS Q5. Automotive outlets have reported camouflaged prototypes in both SUV and Sportback shapes, but the rumored plug-in-hybrid powertrain, output and launch timing remain unconfirmed. The “big decision” is best understood as a question about whether Audi will take the RS formula into the Q5 range—not as a disclosed decision by Audi.
Is Audi making an RS Q5?
There is evidence that Audi is testing vehicles reported as RS Q5 prototypes, but the reports are not a production announcement. SEMA’s September 2026 report describes spy photographs of a Sportback prototype near the Nürburgring. Autoblog reports sightings of both an SUV and a Sportback prototype and says Audi had not released official information about an RS Q5.
That distinction matters: a test vehicle can indicate development work without establishing that a model will reach production, which markets it would serve, or when it might go on sale. The sources reviewed contain no Audi statement explaining a product decision or confirming an RS Q5.
What do the prototypes show?
RS Q5 Sportback
SEMA’s account describes flared wheel arches, substantial tires, oval exhaust finishers and a high-voltage warning sticker on the reported prototype. These are visual observations from a camouflaged test vehicle, not confirmed production equipment or specifications.

RS Q5 SUV
Autoblog reports sightings of a conventional SUV-shaped prototype as well as the Sportback. That establishes only that both body shapes have appeared in prototype reporting; it does not confirm that Audi will sell both versions. evo’s September 15, 2026 page is a prototype photo gallery and does not provide verifiable technical specifications in its accessible text.
What powertrain and horsepower are rumored?
Reports speculate that an RS Q5 could use a plug-in-hybrid V6 related to the new RS 5’s powertrain. Autoblog frames a 2.9-liter twin-turbo V6 plug-in hybrid and 630 hp as expectations by analogy with the RS 5; SEMA likewise describes borrowing the RS 5 plug-in-hybrid V6 as likely. These are outlet projections, not confirmed RS Q5 specifications. Motor.es has projected 639 CV and a late-2027 debut, also by reference to RS 5 hardware; neither figure is an Audi-confirmed output or schedule.

Audi’s May 29, 2026 RS 5 release provides technical context for that model, not confirmation of an RS Q5. Audi says the RS 5 V6’s design and validation are the responsibility of the engine development team in Neckarsulm. Its published fuel-consumption, electricity-use and emissions ranges apply to the RS 5 Sedan and Avant in the release’s stated test context; they should not be read as RS Q5 figures.
Will there be an RS Q5 Sportback?
A Sportback-shaped prototype has been reported, alongside an SUV-shaped one. That makes both body styles part of the current prototype story, but does not establish that either—or both—will become production models. There are no confirmed RS Q5 figures for cargo capacity, equipment, price or performance by body style.

When will the RS Q5 come out, and how much will it cost?
No official launch date, ordering date, price or market list appears in the reviewed sources. The late-2027 debut reported by Motor.es is speculation, not a scheduled release. Buyers should treat any purported timing or pricing as unconfirmed until Audi announces the model and its availability for a specific market.

- Its engine, hybrid system, system output, battery capacity, electric range and charging details.
- Whether the SUV, Sportback or both body styles would be sold.
- Production tire fitment, curb weight, handling hardware, price and ordering or delivery dates.
Those details would determine whether a plug-in-hybrid RS Q5 balances performance with the added mass of electrification, and whether its electric driving and charging capability would be useful to owners. No comparative test of an RS Q5 is available, so prototype sightings cannot establish how it drives or whether one body style would be the better choice.
