The title points to the Chevrolet Volt, GM’s discontinued plug-in hybrid, though it does not name the model. A used Volt can still be useful, but there is no evidence here that every example is reliable or that an individual car retains its original electric range. The sensible answer is vehicle-specific: check its service history, charging function, diagnostic record, and VIN-specific coverage before you buy.
What the Volt does—and what its ratings mean
The Volt is a plug-in hybrid: it can drive on electricity and also use gasoline. That makes it different from a battery-electric car, and its electric range is not a promise for every trip. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency explains that weather, air-conditioning use, and high-speed driving can significantly reduce electric range; its estimates are general comparison guidance, not a prediction for a particular used car. EPA’s overview of electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles also explains that PHEVs have separate electric-mode MPGe and gasoline-mode MPG measures.
GM Authority cited published second-generation Volt figures of 53 miles of electric range and 106 MPGe combined efficiency in its March 2025 report. Those are ratings, not a guarantee of current range or efficiency in a used vehicle. A car’s observed range depends on its condition and driving conditions, so interpret a displayed estimate in context rather than treating it as a battery-health test. GM Authority’s report on the Volt BECM investigation gives the rating context.
What battery-replacement statistics can—and cannot—tell you
The EPA summarized Recurrent’s 2025 analysis of about 15,000 electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles through model year 2023. It reported an average battery replacement rate due to failure of 2.5%, excluding major recalls, and a rate under 0.5% for vehicles from model year 2016 onward. These are broad fleet figures, not a Chevrolet Volt failure rate. They do not measure ordinary range loss or establish the condition of any specific car. The EPA notes that batteries can lose range over time. Read the EPA’s battery-reliability summary.

Check the second-generation Volt’s BECM history
A specific issue merits attention on second-generation cars. GM Authority reported on March 4, 2025, that NHTSA had closed its investigation into battery energy control module (BECM) complaints involving reduced power or a no-start condition in 2016–2019 Volts. The report describes GM special coverage for certain 2016–2018 Volts, extending coverage for the BECM from eight years or 100,000 miles to 15 years or 150,000 miles.
That reported coverage is not universal: eligibility can depend on the vehicle’s VIN and configuration. Ask Chevrolet to check the VIN and confirm any coverage in writing; do not assume a car qualifies based only on its model year. Ask the seller for records showing whether BECM work was completed, and have a qualified shop investigate any warning messages, reduced-power events, or starting problems.

What to inspect before buying a used Volt
- Get the records. Review available maintenance and repair invoices, including records of BECM diagnosis or replacement. Ask the seller about warning messages, reduced-power events, no-start incidents, and charging problems.
- Check coverage by VIN. Contact Chevrolet and review the vehicle’s warranty documents to establish whether any BECM special coverage or other warranty applies to this car.
- Test charging. Confirm that the car connects to charging equipment and charges without warnings or interruptions. A seller’s claim that it charges is not a substitute for seeing the function tested.
- Observe electric range in context. Note the displayed estimate and, if possible, how the car behaves on a familiar drive. Temperature, speed, and climate-control use affect range, so a single display reading does not diagnose battery condition.
- Arrange a qualified inspection. Ask a Chevrolet or hybrid-vehicle specialist to check for diagnostic faults and assess the car’s condition before you commit. The evidence available does not establish a Volt-specific battery failure rate, so aggregate statistics should not replace an inspection.
- Compare specific cars on evidence. Weigh model year, mileage, maintenance records, observed range under comparable conditions, BECM history, VIN-specific coverage, charging operation, and likely repair costs. The available evidence does not support naming one model year as the best choice.
Plan home charging around the car and your electrical system
A J1772-compatible Level 2 EVSE may be appropriate for home charging, but first confirm the particular Volt’s model-year and trim charging capability. More powerful equipment cannot make a vehicle charge faster than its own limit. EPA advises checking circuit capacity and electrical safety before installing Level 2 equipment; consult a qualified electrician if the installation requires new wiring or a dedicated circuit. EPA’s charging guidance explains charger capability and home-charging considerations.
Home charging can make regular charging more convenient. Public charging generally takes longer than filling a gasoline car, so account for your routes and charging access rather than assuming every trip can be completed electrically.

Remember that it still uses gasoline
The Volt is not a zero-tailpipe-emission vehicle in every operating mode. The EPA states: “PHEVs produce tailpipe emissions when gasoline is being used as a fuel source.” Electricity generation also affects the vehicle’s overall emissions. EPA’s PHEV guidance describes these operating modes and emissions considerations.
Federal emissions-control warranties can apply to used vehicles and begin from the date the vehicle was first sold to its original owner, according to EPA guidance. That is not a blanket battery warranty. Check the specific warranty booklet, VIN, state, and in-service date for the protections that actually apply. EPA’s transportation emissions FAQ explains federal emissions-warranty coverage.

- ✅ Battery Dimensions: 9.53" L x 6.89" W x 6.89" H, Terminal: Tapered terminal (Left negative (-), Right positive (+)). ✅ Please ensure to verify the dimensions and terminal position before making a purchase to guarantee compatibility with your vehicle to avoid any fitment issues.
- ✅ With a 52AH capacity and 600 cold cranking amps (CCA). weize group 96R car battery provides reliable performance and long service life, Up to 2 times the cycle life of conventional batteries. If your car's original battery is an AGM type, you must continue using an AGM battery, as your car will not accept a "downgrade" to a flooded battery. Nominal Voltage: 12V. Charging Voltage: 14.4~15.0V. Acceptable Charging Current: 0~15A. Operating Temperature Range: -22°F~158°F.
- ✅ Heat / Cold Resistance: The materials used in the construction of AGM batteries (such as glass fiber mats and specialized separators) have better heat resistance. This allows AGM batteries to maintain their performance and capacity even in the hottest climates, They are also more resistant to extreme temperatures, making them ideal for hot or cold regions.
- ✅ Low Self-Discharge: AGM car batteries have lower self-discharge rates compared to flooded batteries. Self-discharge refers to the loss of capacity that batteries experience over time when not in use. In hot climates, when the battery may need to be stored for extended periods or not frequently used, AGM batteries can better maintain charge, providing higher voltage output and easier engine start-up in any climate.
- ✅ Enhanced Safety: weize AGM batteries have a lower risk of acid leaks and spills compared to flooded batteries. This is because the acid is absorbed and held within the glass fiber mats, reducing the risk of corrosion or damage to surrounding components, this makes AGM batteries more durable and long-lasting, is also two to three times longer than flooded batteries. AGM batteries also have a lower risk of explosion and are safer to handle, making them ideal for high-performance vehicles.
