What has Toyota announced for the GR86?
2027 U.S. model: the 2.4-liter boxer remains specified
Toyota’s June 1, 2026 announcement for the U.S. 2027 GR86 describes a 2.4-liter four-cylinder boxer engine rated at 228 horsepower and 184 lb.-ft. of torque. It also announces updates to throttle calibration, shift feel, interior treatments, convenience features and color—not a turbocharged engine. 2026 Japan update: controls and equipment, not a turbo announcement
Toyota Motor Corporation’s August 6, 2026 release concerns the Japan-market GR86. It describes revised throttle control, electric power steering, shift operation and cockpit details, along with a triple-camera EyeSight configuration. It does not announce a new turbo engine. Canada’s 2026 specifications are market-specific
For Canada’s 2026 model, Toyota describes a naturally aspirated 2.4-liter flat-four boxer with D-4S dual injection and a 12.5:1 compression ratio. Is a future turbo GR86 confirmed?
No primary Toyota statement in the announcements cited here establishes a future turbo GR86. Rumors and secondary claims are not confirmation, and the absence of an announcement does not prove Toyota has no plans. The accurate conclusion is narrower: Toyota has not confirmed the future turbo premise in these sources.

Why a turbo version is still impossible to compare fairly
A meaningful comparison requires verified specifications. Toyota has published no figures in these sources for an alleged future turbo GR86, so there is no grounded basis to assign it horsepower, torque, weight, price, fuel economy, launch timing or performance. Comparisons built from guessed numbers would create false precision.
If Toyota confirms a different powertrain, compare published output, mass, price, fuel economy, drivetrain and transmission, and rely on credible testing for handling or acceleration claims. Until then, the documented point of reference is the announced 2027 U.S. car: a 2.4-liter boxer, 228 horsepower, 184 lb.-ft., front-engine and rear-wheel drive, with manual or automatic transmission choices.
