The Volonaut Airbike is a real, demonstrated single-seat flying vehicle—not just a concept illustration—but it is not yet documented like a conventional motorcycle, aircraft, or mass-produced car. Volonaut presents it as a compact, jet-propelled personal aircraft with computer-assisted stabilization, a claimed 10-minute maximum flight time, and an official preorder price of $880,000.

That combination makes the Airbike look like a superhero machine brought into the real world. It also creates important questions about speed, legality, safety, delivery, maintenance, and what a buyer would actually receive.

What is the Volonaut Airbike?

The Airbike is a single-seat, vertical-takeoff-style flying vehicle associated with Polish inventor and entrepreneur Tomasz Patan. Volonaut says the project followed years of development in stealth mode before its public launch video appeared on April 30, 2025.

Its design intentionally resembles the speeder bikes familiar from science-fiction films: a narrow riding position, a lightweight open structure, and no large exposed conventional propellers. That visual comparison explains much of the excitement around the vehicle, but it should not be read as evidence of any licensing arrangement, technical relationship, or official connection with Star Wars.

Technically, the safest description is a compact, jet-propelled, single-seat flying vehicle with computer-assisted stabilization. Volonaut describes the propulsion system as redundant jet turbines. The company has not publicly supplied enough information to identify the turbine model, quote thrust, calculate fuel consumption, or explain the system’s detailed failure modes.

Volonaut Airbike specifications

Specification Publicly stated information Important qualification
Seats One rider There is no published evidence of independent passenger testing.
Empty mass 30 kg (66 lb) This is the current figure on Volonaut’s specification page.
Maximum pilot mass 95 kg (209 lb) This is a stated limit, not a guarantee of performance at every condition.
Propulsion Redundant jet turbines Turbine make, thrust, fuel burn, noise, and maintenance data have not been disclosed in the reviewed sources.
Speed 102 km/h (63 mph) on the specification page Launch material separately says up to 200 km/h (124 mph).
Maximum flight time 10 minutes Range, reserve policy, payload effects, and environmental conditions are not stated.
Fuel Diesel, biodiesel, Jet-A1, and kerosene These are manufacturer-listed fuel categories; independent fuel-system validation was not located.
Refueling time Under one minute Volonaut has not published a test protocol for this claim.
Stabilization Fully redundant flight computer with enhanced stabilization The public material does not describe the redundancy architecture or response to individual failures.

Why are there two different top speeds?

Volonaut’s public material gives two materially different speed figures:

  • The current technical-specification section lists 102 km/h (63 mph).
  • The launch video and company homepage use promotional language describing speeds of up to 200 km/h (124 mph).

These numbers should not be silently combined into a single “top speed.” The 102 km/h figure is presented alongside Volonaut’s FAA-ultralight compliance framing, while the 200 km/h figure appears in launch positioning. The available information does not establish whether 200 km/h is a development target, a measured test result, a condition-dependent maximum, or a figure that applies outside the stated ultralight operating framework.

For readers comparing the Airbike with cars or motorcycles, the responsible takeaway is that Volonaut currently publishes a 102 km/h specification-page figure while also promoting a separate 200 km/h claim. A final production specification and test conditions would be needed before treating either number as a fully verified customer-performance figure.

How the Airbike is supposed to work

Instead of using a large helicopter rotor or exposed propellers, the Airbike is presented as using compact redundant jet turbines. The vehicle’s flight computer assists with stabilization, allowing the rider to control a machine that must continuously manage attitude and height in three-dimensional space.

“Redundant” and “computer-assisted” are important descriptions, but they do not answer every safety question. Volonaut has not publicly detailed:

  • the number, make, or model of the turbines;
  • available thrust and thrust-to-weight calculations;
  • fuel consumption and usable fuel capacity;
  • noise levels and exhaust heat management;
  • what happens after a turbine, sensor, computer, or power-system failure;
  • emergency landing procedures or an autorotation-like backup capability; or
  • recommended inspection and maintenance intervals.

The listed fuels and jet propulsion also mean the Airbike should not be described as silent, emission-free, or maintenance-free. Its stated 10-minute maximum flight time points toward a short-duration personal-flight experience rather than a practical replacement for a road motorcycle or daily commuter car.

How much does the Volonaut Airbike cost?

Volonaut’s official preorder page lists a full price of $880,000. The published staged payment process is:

  1. $2,000 reservation fee: The initial reservation is described as non-refundable. Volonaut says it is not a legally binding purchase agreement and does not obligate the customer to complete the purchase.
  2. $80,000 deposit: This is intended to secure a build slot.
  3. $798,000 final payment: The remaining amount is due when final assembly begins.

The amounts total the advertised $880,000 price. The reservation process demonstrates that Volonaut is pursuing a commercial build-slot model, but it does not by itself prove mass production, guaranteed delivery, established aftermarket support, or a verified customer-delivery record.

Anyone considering the Volonaut Airbike should read the current preorder terms carefully and obtain written answers about cancellation, delivery timing, taxes, transport, training, storage, spare parts, warranty coverage, insurance, and what happens if the final production configuration changes. A reservation is not the same thing as a delivered aircraft.

When will customers receive one?

The preorder material describes future delivery and training at a U.S. facility, but the reviewed sources do not establish a final production schedule, planned production volume, or verified history of customer deliveries. They also do not establish that the published specifications are frozen for the customer version.

That makes availability one of the Airbike’s biggest unresolved issues. A public demonstration proves that a vehicle was shown flying. It does not independently prove production readiness, reliability over repeated flights, airworthiness, or the existence of a mature service network.

Is the Volonaut Airbike legal to fly in the United States?

Volonaut says that a pilot’s license is not required in the United States because the Airbike is presented as compliant with FAA ultralight rules. The FAA’s own guidance says that ultralight vehicles generally do not require a pilot certificate, but they remain subject to 14 CFR Part 103.

That distinction matters. “No pilot certificate generally required” does not mean “anyone can fly it anywhere.” Part 103 includes operating, airspace, weight, performance, and other limitations. Local property rules, state requirements, airport restrictions, temporary flight restrictions, and the specific characteristics and final classification of the delivered vehicle may also affect where it can operate.

The available sources do not establish a final independent FAA determination for a customer-delivered production Airbike. U.S. readers should confirm the aircraft’s final classification and operating limitations directly with the manufacturer and appropriate aviation authorities before making a purchase or flight plan. Readers outside the United States cannot assume that the FAA framing applies to their country.

What the launch footage proves—and what it does not

The public footage shows that Volonaut has demonstrated a flying vehicle with the Airbike’s distinctive design. That is meaningful: the project has moved beyond a static computer rendering.

However, promotional footage cannot independently establish:

  • a long-term safety record;
  • repeatable performance in wind, rain, heat, or cold;
  • the claimed maximum speed or 10-minute flight time under defined test conditions;
  • failure-handling performance;
  • production consistency;
  • certification or airworthiness documentation; or
  • the cost and availability of training, insurance, repairs, and replacement parts.

Those are not minor details for a machine using jet propulsion just a short distance from its rider. They are the information that separates an impressive prototype or early production aircraft from a practical, supportable consumer product.

  • where the vehicle may legally be stored and operated in the buyer’s jurisdiction.

Ultralight flight training and Part 103 operating guidance may become useful categories for future Airbike owners, but no Airbike-specific training or compliance provider was verified in the reviewed material. Buyers should not assume that a general ultralight course, insurer, or mechanic will accept this particular jet-powered vehicle.

Could the Airbike replace a motorcycle or car?

Not on the evidence currently available. The Airbike’s single-seat layout, 10-minute maximum flight-time claim, exposed rider position, fuel requirements, unclear operating locations, and unresolved support arrangements make it better understood as an early personal-flight product than as everyday road transportation.

It may eventually serve a specialized recreational, demonstration, or short-hop role for trained operators with suitable private operating space. But that is very different from commuting between cities, using public roads, or treating it like a motorcycle with an unusual engine.

Bottom line

The Volonaut Airbike is real enough to have been publicly demonstrated and commercially concrete enough to carry an official $880,000 preorder process. Its carbon-fiber-oriented lightweight design, redundant jet turbines, computer-assisted stabilization, and superhero-like silhouette make it one of the more striking personal-flight projects to reach public attention.

It is not yet sufficiently documented in the reviewed sources to support claims of routine availability, unrestricted operation, final certification, proven safety, or practical everyday transportation. The most accurate way to view it is as a spectacular and potentially significant early personal aircraft whose final performance, production maturity, regulatory status, and ownership experience still require verification.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does the Volonaut Airbike cost?

Volonaut lists an $880,000 full price: a $2,000 non-refundable reservation fee, an $80,000 deposit to secure a build slot, and a $798,000 final payment when final assembly begins.

How fast is the Volonaut Airbike?

Volonaut’s specification page lists 102 km/h (63 mph), while launch material separately claims up to 200 km/h (124 mph). The available information does not resolve whether the higher figure is a measured production capability or a differently framed promotional claim.

Do you need a pilot’s license to fly the Volonaut Airbike in the United States?

Volonaut presents it within the U.S. ultralight framework, under which a pilot certificate is generally not required. Ultralights still must comply with FAA Part 103 and applicable airspace and local rules, so this does not mean the Airbike can be flown anywhere.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How long can the Volonaut Airbike fly?

Volonaut states a maximum flight time of 10 minutes. The reviewed material does not provide a confirmed range, reserve policy, fuel-burn figure, or performance data under specific payload and weather conditions.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: The Volonaut Airbike is a demonstrated single-seat jet-powered flying vehicle with an $880,000 preorder process, but its final production status, independent airworthiness evidence, customer delivery record, operating limits, and ownership costs remain unresolved. Treat the 102 km/h and 200 km/h figures as separate company claims, and do not confuse FAA ultralight eligibility with permission to fly anywhere.
