Lewis Hamilton says his Ferrari F40 was driven just 69 kilometres—about 43 miles—after it was collected in Maranello in 1991, then parked. He chose to restore the car so he could drive it rather than leave it as a dusty display piece. The restoration was reported to have taken place in Maranello, but the published accounts do not provide a work-by-work record or the car’s final odometer reading.
Why Hamilton wanted this F40
Hamilton described the F40 as a dream car and said he had been looking for a low-mileage example with a story. In his account, the previous owner collected it in Maranello, drove it home 69 kilometres and never started it again. That short journey is the origin of the roughly 43-mile figure in the car’s story.
The 69 kilometres is a reported distance driven after collection, not independent confirmation that the car’s total odometer reading was exactly 43 miles. Neither account establishes a final reading after restoration.
Preserving a time capsule or making it usable?
Hamilton’s decision was between leaving the dusty F40 as an “art piece” and having it cleaned and restored so he could drive it. He opted for use: the car’s unusually limited history mattered to him, but he did not want its preservation to mean it could never be enjoyed on the road.

- The leader in hobby products around the world
- Made using the highest quality components and materials
- Test for durability and safety
That choice captures a real tension with exceptionally low-mileage cars. Leaving a car untouched can preserve its original state; restoring it can make it usable, while changing some aspect of that untouched condition. Hamilton’s stated aim was to drive his F40, not simply to keep it as a static exhibit.
What is known about the restoration
Motorsport.com’s October 6, 2026 report places the restoration in Maranello. The available reporting does not itemize the work performed on Hamilton’s car: it does not say which mechanical components, body panels, paint or interior elements were serviced or replaced. It also does not establish the restoration’s duration or cost.

Ferrari Classiche offers useful context, but not a work log for this F40. Ferrari says its Maranello workshop performs restorations and maintenance on classic cars using original components and spare parts, or replicas made to original specifications. Its authenticity process involves technical inspection against the car’s initial specifications, supported by historical records including chassis drawings and information about components. Ferrari’s general description should not be mistaken for confirmation of the precise tasks carried out on Hamilton’s car.

- Reported journey: Hamilton said the car travelled 69 kilometres from Maranello to its first owner’s home in 1991.
- Rounded conversion: 69 kilometres is approximately 43 miles.
- Not an independently established total: The accounts do not verify an exact lifetime mileage or state the post-restoration odometer reading.
The figure is best understood as the reported distance of that initial journey, not as a certified current mileage claim.
