Neither the Ineos Grenadier nor the Land Rover Defender is a universal off-road winner. The Grenadier stands out for its conventional hardware—ladder frame, solid axles, low range and available front and rear differential locks. But the Defender 110 with air suspension has higher published obstacle-clearance and wading figures than the Grenadier Station Wagon in the manufacturer specifications compared here. The right choice depends on the exact model, suspension, equipment and terrain; the figures below are not from a matched independent test.

What the published off-road figures show

The comparison below uses manufacturer figures for the Grenadier Station Wagon and Defender 110. They are not perfectly like-for-like: Land Rover separates coil- and air-suspension figures, while INEOS specifies different Grenadier approach angles for UK/EU and rest-of-world bumper configurations. The Defender figures come from a 2024 technical specification, so check the current specification sheet for the model and market you are considering.

Measure Grenadier Station Wagon Defender 110 How to read it
Ground or obstacle clearance 264 mm ground clearance 226 mm with coil suspension; 293 mm with air suspension, at off-road height The terms and configurations differ; these are published specifications, not controlled measurements on the same vehicle or route.
Maximum wading depth 800 mm 850 mm with coil suspension; 900 mm with air suspension Manufacturer maximums are not a guarantee that a particular crossing is safe.
Approach angle 35.5° with UK/EU bumper; 36.2° with rest-of-world bumper 31.5° with coil suspension; 37.5° with air suspension, at off-road height Bumper and suspension configuration change the figure.
Breakover or ramp angle 28.2° 24.2° with coil suspension; 30.7° with air suspension, at off-road height Breakover describes clearance under the middle of the vehicle as it crests an obstacle.
Departure angle 36.1° 38.0° with coil suspension; 41.9° with air suspension, at off-road height Equipment and suspension affect the published value.
Drivetrain and locking hardware Permanent four-wheel drive; two-speed transfer case with lockable centre differential; front and rear differential locks optional or trim-dependent Not fully compared in the cited Defender specification excerpt The available source detail does not support a full drivetrain comparison.

These are figures published by INEOS and Land Rover. Land Rover says its standard-specification unladen figures can change with optional equipment. Neither manufacturer’s figures establish how the vehicles perform against one another on a particular trail.

What the numbers mean on a trail

Clearance: rocks, ruts and ridgelines

Clearance matters when rocks, ruts or ridges could contact the underside. On the figures cited here, the Defender 110 with air suspension has 293 mm of off-road obstacle clearance, compared with 264 mm of ground clearance for the Grenadier Station Wagon. The Defender’s coil-suspension figure is 226 mm. Because Land Rover calls its measure “obstacle clearance” and INEOS calls its measure “ground clearance,” and because the suspension configurations differ, treat the numbers as manufacturer specifications rather than a direct test result.

For a route with repeated ridges or deep ruts, clearance is only one part of the question: the shape of the obstacle and the vehicle’s approach, breakover and departure angles affect where contact may occur. A higher published clearance figure does not by itself tell you whether a particular vehicle can cross an obstacle without touching its bumper, underside or rear. Use the figures to screen configurations, then assess the actual route and the vehicle as equipped.

Approach, breakover and departure: three different contact risks

  • Approach angle concerns the front of the vehicle as it climbs toward an obstacle.
  • Breakover (or ramp) angle concerns the underside as the vehicle crests a ridge or sharp rise.
  • Departure angle concerns the rear as it clears an obstacle on the way down or out.

The Defender 110 air-suspension figures are higher than the Grenadier’s published figures for approach, breakover and departure. With coil suspension, the Defender’s listed approach and breakover values are lower than the Grenadier’s, while its 38.0° departure angle is higher than the Grenadier’s 36.1°. Those comparisons apply only to the listed models and configurations: body style, ride height, bumper, wheels, tires and accessories can change the practical result. The Grenadier’s approach figure also differs by regional bumper.

These angles are not a promise that a vehicle can climb an obstacle of the same angle in every situation. The cited figures describe vehicle geometry; they do not account for every trail surface, line, tire, load or driver input. A loose slope and a firm, straight ramp are not interchangeable tests. Compare the same kind of measurement on the exact vehicle, and avoid turning a small numerical difference into a claim of overall superiority.

Wading depth: a maximum is not a safe crossing plan

INEOS lists 800 mm for the Grenadier Station Wagon; Land Rover lists 850 mm for the Defender 110 with coil suspension and 900 mm with air suspension. A maximum depth does not account for current, an uneven or soft bottom, water movement, vehicle load, entry and exit conditions, or a sudden change in depth. Check the owner’s manual for the exact vehicle and assess the crossing itself rather than treating the brochure figure as a target. Do not enter water if you cannot establish that the route and conditions are suitable.

The figures are best used as published reference points, not a guarantee of safe passage through water at that depth. A route can become unsuitable well below a maximum rating if the current, bottom or exit is problematic. Land Rover’s specifications also remind buyers that figures may change with optional equipment; the same general caution applies when evaluating a vehicle that has been modified or fitted with accessories.

Where the Grenadier’s hardware makes its case

INEOS describes the Grenadier as built around a full box-section ladder-frame chassis and heavy-duty solid beam axles developed with Carraro. Its permanent four-wheel-drive system pairs with a two-speed transfer case and integrated lockable centre differential. Front and rear electronically actuated differential locks are optional or trim- and market-dependent, so confirm that a specific vehicle has them rather than assuming they are standard.

This hardware may appeal to drivers who want low range, solid axles and the option of axle lockers for situations where traction is uneven. It does not prove that the Grenadier will outperform every Defender: tire choice, driving line, ground conditions, vehicle setup and driver skill all matter. Nor does the evidence here establish that every Defender lacks a particular feature; the cited Defender specification excerpt does not fully compare its drivetrain hardware.

When evaluating a Grenadier, separate the features that are part of the described basic layout from the options that may or may not be fitted. Ask whether the exact trim and market include front and rear locks, which tires are installed, and whether the winch is present if recovery capability is part of your plan. The source identifies the KO2 as an optional tire for more demanding terrain and describes reinforced sidewalls, but that does not establish fitment for every Grenadier or Defender. Confirm tire size, wheel, load rating, vehicle compatibility and market before choosing a replacement.

The winch and differential locks are possible configuration choices, not a checklist of equipment every buyer must purchase. Consider them in light of the route and recovery plan; the reviewed specifications do not support a universal aftermarket-fit recommendation or a claim that a particular accessory is essential. They also do not provide purchase prices, so capability comparisons here should not be read as value-for-money or ownership-cost comparisons.

Why the exact Defender configuration matters

“Defender” covers more than one body style and suspension setup. Land Rover’s 2024 technical specification separates 110 coil and air suspension and provides separate dimensions and figures for the 130. The figures in the table are for the 110 only; do not transfer them to a Defender 90 or 130. Air suspension’s listed off-road-height measurements are materially different from the 110’s coil figures, which changes the comparison with the Grenadier.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Optional equipment can also alter specifications. Land Rover specifically cautions that side tubes or side steps may affect off-road capability. Wheels, tires, bumpers and other accessories can change clearance or geometry too. Confirm the exact vehicle’s technical sheet and installed equipment, including the suspension setting applicable to the published figures.

That configuration check matters before comparing brochure figures, but also when viewing a used or modified vehicle. Identify the actual body, suspension, wheels, tires and fitted accessories rather than assuming that a badge or trim name tells the whole story. The reviewed source gives separate Defender 130 figures but does not provide a complete, matched comparison for every Defender body against every Grenadier body. Likewise, the Grenadier measurements cited here apply to the Station Wagon, not automatically to the Quartermaster.

What the manufacturers’ testing does—and does not—establish

INEOS says it assessed the Grenadier at Austria’s Schöckl proving ground. Its development page reports that the vehicle’s 35.5° approach angle and 264 mm ground clearance proved effective on gradients up to 31°. INEOS also reports nearly 10,000 km of durability driving on the mountain and 2,000 km of endurance per vehicle in its capability section. These are the manufacturer’s accounts of its own testing; the two distance figures describe different things and should not be combined or treated as independent verification. See INEOS’s testing and development description.

The manufacturer material cited here does not provide an independent, same-route Grenadier-versus-Defender test. The Schöckl figures therefore offer context about INEOS’s development program, not evidence that the Grenadier is better than the Defender. Land Rover’s specification supplies configuration-specific capability figures and cautions that “Challenging off-road driving requires full training and experience.”

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

That distinction is important when interpreting impressive-sounding test numbers. The nearly 10,000 km and 2,000 km figures are reported in different parts of the INEOS development material and describe different testing claims. They are not a single combined distance, a third-party durability result or a Defender comparison. The evidence reviewed also does not provide an independent population statistic, comparative trail score or universal pass/fail result to settle the choice.

Choose by route and configuration, not by one headline number

The Grenadier may fit better if…

  • You place a high value on its ladder-frame and solid-axle layout, permanent four-wheel drive and two-speed transfer case.
  • You want the option of front and rear differential locks, and have confirmed they are fitted to the trim and market you are buying.
  • You have identified suitable tires and equipment for your actual terrain, rather than assuming an optional feature is standard.

This is a fit based on its published hardware, not a universal trail ranking.

The Defender may fit better if…

  • The specific Defender body style and suspension suit your route and everyday use.
  • You are comparing a 110 with air suspension and value its higher published obstacle-clearance and wading figures against the Grenadier Station Wagon figures in this comparison.
  • You have checked the effects of its wheels, tires, accessories and suspension configuration rather than relying on a model name alone.

That specification advantage applies to the cited 110 air-suspension figures; it does not establish that every Defender configuration is more capable than every Grenadier.

Make a configuration checklist before deciding

  1. Write down the exact model. For the Defender, identify whether it is a 90, 110 or 130. For the Grenadier, confirm the body style; the figures here are for the Station Wagon, not the Quartermaster.
  2. Confirm suspension and ride height. The Defender’s cited 110 figures differ substantially between coil and air suspension; verify which setup and height apply.
  3. Check installed hardware. Confirm differential locks, transfer-case equipment, bumper specification and any factory options on the individual Grenadier. Check the Defender’s exact technical specification rather than inferring equipment from this comparison.
  4. Inspect wheels, tires and accessories. Match tires to the terrain and vehicle, and account for steps, side tubes, bumpers, winches and other additions that may affect clearance or capability.
  5. Describe the route, not just the vehicle’s limits. Consider the actual rocks, ruts, slopes, water, recovery options and driver experience. A maximum brochure figure does not substitute for route assessment or training.

For a practical comparison, make two lists before choosing: the conditions the route actually presents and the equipment fitted to each candidate vehicle. If water crossings are relevant, check the owner’s manual and conditions rather than relying only on the stated maximum depth. If the route involves rocks or ridges, compare the right geometry figures and account for installed accessories. If recovery planning is important, verify whether the Grenadier’s optional winch or differential locks are actually fitted, and assess recovery equipment for the specific vehicle and route.

Then compare the configurations you could really buy, not the most favorable figure from one model against an unspecified version of the other. A Defender 110 with air suspension and one with coil suspension have different published figures; the Grenadier’s listed approach angle also changes by regional bumper. The specification sheet is a starting point for narrowing choices, not a substitute for checking a specific vehicle.

Verdict

Choose the Grenadier if its traditional chassis and drivetrain layout, plus the availability of axle lockers, are the priorities and the exact vehicle is equipped for your terrain. Choose the Defender if the specific model and suspension suit your needs; the cited 110 air-suspension specification leads this comparison in published obstacle clearance and wading depth. Neither conclusion is a universal ranking: compare the exact body, suspension, trim, tires and accessories, and treat manufacturer specifications as limits and reference points—not as proof of a head-to-head result.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the Grenadier more capable off-road than the Defender?

The reviewed specifications do not establish a universal winner or provide a same-route independent comparison. The Grenadier has a conventional ladder-frame and solid-axle layout, permanent four-wheel drive, low range and available front and rear locks. The cited Defender 110 with air suspension has higher published obstacle-clearance and wading figures than the Grenadier Station Wagon. The answer depends on exact configuration and terrain.

Which has more ground clearance, the Grenadier or Defender 110?

INEOS lists 264 mm of ground clearance for the Grenadier Station Wagon. Land Rover lists 226 mm of off-road obstacle clearance for the Defender 110 with coil suspension and 293 mm with air suspension at off-road height. Because the manufacturers use different terms and configurations, treat these as published specifications rather than a direct measurement test.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What is the wading depth of each vehicle?

INEOS lists 800 mm for the Grenadier Station Wagon. Land Rover lists 850 mm for a Defender 110 with coil suspension and 900 mm with air suspension. These are manufacturer maximums, not a guarantee that a crossing at that depth is safe; check the exact vehicle’s manual and assess water conditions.

Do the Defender’s off-road angles change with suspension?

Yes. For the Defender 110, Land Rover lists approach, breakover and departure angles of 31.5°, 24.2° and 38.0° with coil suspension, and 37.5°, 30.7° and 41.9° with air suspension at off-road height. The Grenadier Station Wagon lists 35.5° or 36.2° approach depending on regional bumper, 28.2° breakover and 36.1° departure.

Are front and rear differential locks standard on the Grenadier?

The reviewed INEOS specification describes electronically actuated front and rear differential locks as optional or dependent on trim and market. Confirm the equipment on the specific vehicle rather than assuming it is standard.

Do the cited figures apply to every Grenadier and Defender?

No. The Grenadier figures here are for the Station Wagon, not automatically the Quartermaster. The Defender figures in the comparison are for the 110; Land Rover lists separate configurations and figures for other body styles, and the 110’s measurements vary by coil or air suspension. Check the current market- and model-year specification and fitted accessories.

Has either manufacturer proved its vehicle is better in an independent head-to-head test?

Not in the reviewed sources. INEOS reports its own development testing at Austria’s Schöckl proving ground, including gradients up to 31°, nearly 10,000 km of described durability driving and 2,000 km endurance per vehicle. Those manufacturer-reported figures are not an independent Grenadier-versus-Defender test.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: the Grenadier makes its case with traditional off-road hardware and available axle locks; the Defender 110 with air suspension has higher published obstacle-clearance and wading figures in this comparison. Choose by exact model, suspension, equipment and route—not by a single brochure number.
