Pakistan’s spring 2026 fuel surge squeezed both ride-hailing captains and passengers, but it did not produce one uniform fare increase or prove that every driver was losing money. April and May reports documented individual accounts of losses and city-specific fare changes; they are historical snapshots, not current October fare quotes. Petrol was announced at Rs398.96 per litre from October 9, 2026, but that fuel price alone does not establish what an inDrive or Yango ride costs today.
What changed in spring 2026?
Fuel prices rose sharply during the spring, increasing the cost of running a car at the same time that commuters were confronting higher ride costs. TechJuice reported petrol at Rs458.41 per litre on April 3, 2026, up from Rs321.17 per litre in early March; its report also cited high-speed diesel at Rs520.35 per litre on April 3 and an earlier March petrol-price hike of Rs55 per litre. These are dated figures from the article, not today’s prices. TechJuice’s April report described the pressure on ride-hailing and delivery workers.
For captains, the squeeze is between what a trip pays and what it costs to complete: fuel is a major expense, but not the only one. For riders, the effect can be a more expensive commute, less predictable pricing, or fewer practical app-based options. Neither a fuel increase nor a reported fare change automatically tells us a driver’s net earnings.
Were captains actually operating at a loss?
One reported loss, not an industry-wide average
TechJuice gave the example of a captain who previously took home Rs3,500 a day and was operating at a net loss after the fuel surge. That is a reported individual case, not a representative earnings survey. The report does not establish how many captains were losing money, or what the average net income was across either platform.

One Karachi captain’s account to Dawn
In Dawn’s April 1 account, Karachi inDrive captain Qamar Abbas said his per-kilometre rates had not been adjusted since 2018, when he recalled petrol costing Rs120 per litre; at the time of his interview, he put petrol at about Rs322 per litre. He said his monthly take-home had been around Rs100,000 before the war and had fallen by half over the preceding 30 days. These are Abbas’s personal estimates as reported by Dawn, not independently measured earnings for all inDrive captains.
The accounts illustrate why “captains at loss” needs qualification: some drivers said rising costs had overwhelmed their income, but the available reporting does not show that every captain, city, trip, or platform was loss-making.

How much did fares rise—and where?
Dawn’s May 10 report attributed cumulative fare changes to Yango of up to 20% in Karachi and Lahore and up to 35% in Islamabad and Rawalpindi. Yango attributed the changes to longer average trip distances and higher fuel consumption per ride. These are company-attributed figures for the period covered by the May report, not current October fares or a guarantee that every trip rose by those amounts. Dawn’s fare report does not establish equivalent increases for every inDrive city or ride.
The price of a particular trip can also move with route, timing, demand, and the availability of drivers. In April, inDrive communications manager Parisey Tariq told Dawn that the platform did not apply a flat, automatic increase tied to petrol. She said reviews considered overall market conditions, including distance, route efficiency, driver availability, time, and broader operating costs. Her explanation describes the company’s stated approach; it is not a live fare formula riders can use to predict a quote.

Why higher petrol does not translate directly into a matching fare rise
A fare is a price for a specific ride; fuel expense is one part of a captain’s operating cost; take-home income is what remains after costs. They are related, but they are not interchangeable. A longer trip may use more fuel, while a driver’s day also depends on how many paid rides they get, time spent waiting, traffic, and whether the fare covers the route efficiently.
Dawn’s May article offered an illustration of fuel-cost pressure: it described a small ride-hailing car, such as a Suzuki Alto or Suzuki Cultus, travelling 200–250 km a day and using about 15 litres of fuel. At the article’s cited petrol price of Rs253 per litre on February 27, that fuel would cost Rs3,795 per day; at Rs415 per litre in May, it would cost Rs6,225, a reported increase of 64%. This is a calculation using the article’s stated daily fuel use and prices—not audited fleet data, a measure of every captain’s expenses, or a fare increase.

Demand and driver availability matter too. Dawn’s reporting noted that Ramazan and Eid timing, longer rides, and changing passenger demand could affect the market alongside fuel. A platform may adjust fares, but that does not establish that the increase covers each driver’s added costs or that passengers can afford it.

Passengers reported having to reconsider routine trips. Dawn quoted Karachi commuter Ayesha Emaad Khan, who travelled 15–17 km daily, saying a one-way ride that had initially cost about Rs900 rose to Rs1,700–Rs2,000 after the fuel hike. She said it could reach Rs2,500–Rs3,000 on days with rallies, protests, or rain. Those are her reported experiences on her route, not standard fares for Karachi or a current quote.

Dawn also reported that ride-hailing services had more than two million users in Pakistan over the preceding few years. The cost squeeze pushed some people toward carpooling, rickshaws, motorcycles, work-from-home arrangements, or using apps less often. Carpooling may reduce costs for a compatible route, but the report notes practical limits: irregular work schedules can make it difficult, and some passengers have safety concerns. The best alternative depends on the trip, timing, affordability, and the rider’s comfort and safety needs.
What are petrol prices now?
Pakistan announced petrol at Rs398.96 per litre and high-speed diesel at Rs395.72 per litre on October 8, 2026, effective October 9. The Petroleum Division published the notice, and Radio Pakistan reported the effective date: Ministry of Energy (Petroleum Division) and Radio Pakistan. This national fuel-price announcement is not a city-by-city fare survey and does not reveal current captain net earnings. The April and May fare figures above should not be recalculated mechanically from the October petrol price.
How riders and captains can use these figures
For riders comparing a commute
- Check the app quote for the specific route and time; historical percentages do not predict an individual trip’s price.
- Compare the full practical cost of alternatives, including schedule flexibility, availability, comfort, and safety—not just the headline fare.
- If considering a carpool, account for whether the route and work hours match; lower cost is not useful if the arrangement is impractical or feels unsafe.
For captains tracking trip economics
- Keep fuel spending and distance records alongside ride income to understand costs for your own vehicle and working pattern.
- Treat a logbook as a way to track expenses, not as a fix for low fares or a guarantee of profit.
- Do not assume a reported platform-wide or city-level fare change applies to each ride or covers each captain’s costs.
The reporting does not establish current October inDrive or Yango fares by city, representative captain earnings, or verified current driver incentives. For a current decision, the app’s live quote and a captain’s own cost records are more relevant than spring figures.
