In the United States, NBC carried the television broadcast and Peacock was the announced online streaming platform, with coverage scheduled to begin at 11:00 a.m. ET. The race itself was originally planned for 12:30 p.m. ET, but rain and lightning concerns delayed the green flag until approximately 4:44 p.m. ET.
This is an archived race-day guide, not a current live-stream listing. The 2024 race is complete, and a current Peacock subscription should not be assumed to include the completed broadcast. Replay or archive availability must be checked separately.

Peacock and the Indianapolis-area blackout
Peacock was intended to carry the online livestream as well as surrounding Indy 500 programming, including practice, qualifying, warm-up and related coverage. However, the 2024 event was subject to territorial blackout restrictions. Subscribers in the Indianapolis-area market could be unable to stream the race through Peacock and instead needed to use their local NBC affiliate.
IMS specifically reported that Indianapolis NBC affiliate WTHR would carry the race live locally after the delay was lifted. If Peacock is unavailable because of a local blackout, an indoor TV antenna may be another way to receive your local NBC station. Reception depends on location, building construction, antenna quality and signal conditions; an antenna does not provide the Peacock stream.
That blackout information is historical. It should not be treated as a rule for a later Indy 500, and it does not establish whether a current Peacock subscription includes a replay of the 2024 race.

Why the Indy 500 started late
Heavy rain moved through central Indiana on race day, and lightning concerns led Indianapolis Motor Speedway officials to clear the grandstands and pause operations. INDYCAR’s post-race account described the evacuation as beginning at approximately 11:15 a.m. ET. The storm interruption continued through the original pre-race and race-start window.
The important distinction is that 12:30 p.m. ET was the planned race-broadcast time, not the eventual green-flag time. IMS reported that track-drying equipment began working at 2:30 p.m. ET and later announced an estimated 4:44 p.m. ET start.
| Time | Race-day event |
|---|---|
| 11:00 a.m. ET | NBC and Peacock pre-race coverage was scheduled to begin. |
| About 11:15 a.m. ET | Grandstands were evacuated as weather and lightning concerns affected operations. |
| 12:30 p.m. ET | The original race-broadcast start time passed while the event remained delayed. |
| 2:30 p.m. ET | Track-drying equipment began working, according to IMS. |
| Approximately 4:44 p.m. ET | IMS targeted the delayed green flag, and the race ultimately ran later that afternoon. |
The race was not postponed to Monday. It was held later on Sunday after the track-drying process and weather-related safety pause.

- VHF-UHF DUAL BAND AMPLIFICATION: Outdoor preamplifier uses TwinAmp technology to separately process VHF and UHF signals, to improve handling capacity and maintaining a cleaner signal path across long coax runs.
- LOW NOISE AMPLIFICATION TECHNOLOGY: Clear Circuit design provides 1.0 dB low noise performance, reducing dropouts and maintaining stable over-the-air reception.
- INSTALLS ON NON-AMPLIFIED ANTENNAS: Compatible with non-amplified outdoor HDTV antennas, adding performance enhancement without replacing existing hardware.
- SMART DEVICE AND TV COMPATIBILITY: Works with most Smart TVs and digital tuners using standard coax input, integrating with streaming setups and supporting over-the-air reception when paired with external amplification systems.
- TRUSTED U.S.-BASED DESIGN: Built on decades of Winegard technology expertise, delivering dependable performance and exceptional quality with American designs and manufacturing.
What the weather record shows
The useful historical weather story is operational rather than a reconstructed forecast: rain and lightning concerns forced the grandstands to be cleared, the track needed drying, and the green flag moved to late afternoon. The available race-day record does not justify presenting a generic forecast as though it were the official reason for every timing change.
The delay also affected Kyle Larson’s attempt to compete in both the Indianapolis 500 and NASCAR’s Coca-Cola 600 on the same day. That double-duty schedule was one reason the unusually long Indy 500 delay received additional attention.
2024 Indianapolis 500 starting grid
Scott McLaughlin won pole position with a four-lap qualifying average of 234.220 mph. INDYCAR described it as the fastest pole-winning performance in Indianapolis 500 history at that time. The front row was an all-Team Penske Chevrolet lineup: McLaughlin on pole, Will Power second and defending race winner Josef Newgarden third.

- 4-Output Distribution Amplifier: Boosts signal to be split for reception of free broadcast TV on up to four TVs or digital converter boxes without impacting quality; Supports ATSC 3.0 NEXTGEN TV, 4K 8K UHD
- Compact Design for Versatile Installation: Measures 3.5" H x 3.8" W x 1" D; Compact size for indoor use, can be used outdoors with termination caps, watertight F-connectors, and weather boots; Compatible with HDTV, analog, digital TV antenna applications, legacy CATV
- Extended Frequency Range: Operating frequency extends to 1.2 GHz to accommodate CATV and cable broadband applications
- Reception Considerations: Each market has TV towers located in different areas; Distance to the towers and obstructions like trees and your home's building materials will affect reception; an antenna cannot provide cable TV channels
- Durable Housing with Protection Features: Precision machine-sealed zinc diecast housing protects against dust and water droplets and provides shielding from electrostatic discharge; Excellent surge protection on all ports

- 𝗜𝗺𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗮𝗻𝘁 𝗡𝗼𝘁𝗲: This amplifier does not create signals, only enhances weak or moderate ones. If you live extremely close to broadcast towers with full-strength signals, this product is not required. It performs best in areas with obstructions or farther from transmitters.
Where was the 2024 Indy 500 streamed?
In the United States, Peacock was the announced online streaming platform, while NBC carried the television broadcast. Universo was listed as the Spanish-language outlet. The arrangement described here applied to the 2024 race and should not be assumed to describe later events.
Why could some Indianapolis viewers not watch the race on Peacock?
The 2024 broadcast had territorial blackout restrictions. Viewers in the Indianapolis-area market could be unable to stream the race through Peacock and instead needed their local NBC affiliate, including WTHR in Indianapolis.
Was the 2024 Indianapolis 500 postponed to Monday?
No. The race was delayed on Sunday by rain and lightning concerns, track-drying work began in the afternoon, and the event ultimately started at approximately 4:44 p.m. ET.
The Bottom Line
The 2024 Indy 500 was scheduled for a 12:30 p.m. ET race start on NBC and Peacock, but storms and lightning concerns pushed the green flag to approximately 4:44 p.m. ET. Scott McLaughlin started from pole, Josef Newgarden won after a final-lap pass on Pato O’Ward, and the race was completed on May 26 rather than postponed to Monday.
