The mark replaced a 169.828 mph record set in 1972. The 58-year span applies to that specific class—not to every motorcycle land-speed record, including Burt Munro’s separate 1967 mark.
What record did the Indian Challenger break?
Indian Motorcycle reported on 24 September 2025 that O’Hara reached 194.384 mph in the AMA 2000cc APS-AG class. The Bonneville Motorcycle Speed Trials’ record table lists the same speed, rider, manufacturer and year for its 2000 APS AG category: the event’s current record table.
Indian says the previous class record was 169.828 mph, set by J. Angerer on a Triumph in 1972. The difference between the two published speeds is 24.556 mph. The claim that the record stood for 58 years describes the interval from that 1972 class mark to O’Hara’s 2025 mark; it is not a claim about the overall motorcycle land-speed record.
Why this is a class record, not an overall speed record
Land-speed competition divides attempts into classes. The AMA says categories can vary according to engine displacement, engine and chassis modifications, and streamlining. O’Hara’s result belongs to the 2000cc APS-AG class, so it should not be described as the fastest motorcycle speed ever recorded.

The Bonneville Motorcycle Speed Trials are the AMA Land Speed Grand Championship, held at the Bonneville Salt Flats near Wendover, Utah. The AMA describes the flats as a 40-square-mile expanse of dried saltwater. The event also hosts FIM world-record attempts, but O’Hara’s reported result here is an AMA class record.
How the record-setting Challenger differed from a production bike
The record attempt used an S&S-built Indian Challenger prepared for Bonneville, not an unmodified retail motorcycle. Indian Motorcycle’s account describes competition-specific changes to the bodywork, fuel tank, engine setup and tires.

- Engine preparation: Indian reports minor changes for land-speed racing’s limited runtime. The crankshaft retained OEM weight, while compression was raised to use higher-octane fuel.
- Land-speed tires: The bike used Dunlop tires selected as more appropriate for the attempt.
These details come from Indian Motorcycle’s description of the project, rather than an independent teardown of the machine.
How it compares with Burt Munro’s record
Burt Munro’s 1967 record is a separate achievement on a different motorcycle and in a different class. Indian Motorcycle lists Munro’s speed as 184.087 mph on a heavily modified 1920 Indian Scout. O’Hara’s 194.384 mph Challenger result is a 2025 AMA 2000cc APS-AG class mark. The speeds are useful historical context, but they are not competing claims for the same record.

The team behind the Bonneville effort
Indian Motorcycle says it partnered with S&S Cycle and Mission Foods for the attempt. O’Hara is an Indian Wrecking Crew rider and a two-time King of the Baggers champion, according to the company’s report. Indian’s Vice President of Product Technology, Racing, and Service, Gary Gray, said the effort also aimed to honor earlier land-speed racers and push the team to go as fast as possible.
