Dispatches and registrations measure different things
A dispatch is a wholesale shipment from an automaker to a dealer. A registration records a vehicle entering the customer-facing market through the registration system. Timing differences mean the two totals need not match in a given month.

JATO Dynamics India reported 423.4K passenger-vehicle registrations in September 2026, up 31.0% year over year. That is a separate retail-registration measure, not an alternative count of September manufacturer dispatches. JATO’s release identifies its figure as registrations.
Maruti Suzuki leads, but company-wide sales are not the market comparison
Maruti Suzuki India Limited reported total sales of 236,013 units for September 2026. Its company total includes domestic sales, sales to other original-equipment manufacturers, and exports; it should not be described as domestic passenger-vehicle dispatches. For a like-for-like domestic PV comparison, HT Auto reported Maruti’s dispatches at 181,838 units. Maruti Suzuki’s official release sets out the broader company-sales scope.

Why Tata and Mahindra rankings vary by report
Tata Motors and Mahindra are close in some maker-level dispatch tables, but their reported order and figures vary with the table and scope. Autocar India’s wholesale table lists Tata at 56,972 and Mahindra at 56,745, putting Tata ahead by 227 units in that particular comparison. These figures should be quoted with that attribution, not treated as a settled ranking across all reports. Autocar India’s table gives those values.
Mahindra’s official release reports 64,092 domestic passenger vehicles, all of them utility vehicles, and says that figure grew 14% year over year. Its scope is not interchangeable with every maker-level PV dispatch table. The same release gives total vehicle sales of 114,874, a broader figure that includes other categories and exports. Mahindra’s September release distinguishes the utility-vehicle and total-vehicle figures.

- Use approximately 4.58–4.60 lakh for the reported domestic PV dispatch market, noting whether the figure is Autopunditz’s exact compilation or another outlet’s rounded total.
- Do not substitute JATO’s 423.4K registrations for wholesale dispatches; they measure different stages of the market.
- Keep automaker comparisons within the same category and scope. Domestic PV dispatches, utility-vehicle sales, company totals, exports, and sales to other OEMs are not equivalent measures.
