In-Vehicle Gesture Control Needs Better Driver-Behavior Technology

Gesture controls can be less visually demanding than touchscreens, but they are not automatically safe. Safer systems must adapt to the driver, road context, workload, and automation state.

In-car gesture control can reduce the need to look down and touch a screen, but it is not automatically safer. A 2023 simulator comparison found that gestures affected driving performance less than touchscreen interaction did, yet still worsened reaction-related and vehicle-control measures compared with driving without a secondary task. To make gestures safer in practice, a car must recognize not just a hand motion but also who is making it, what is happening on the road, and whether the driver is ready to interact.

Is gesture control safer than using a touchscreen while driving?

It may impose less visual demand than touch, but the available evidence does not support calling it safe in every situation. In a 2023 simulator study with 36 participants, touchscreen interaction produced the worst driving performance among the tested touch, speech, gesture, and baseline conditions. Gesture-related effects were smaller than touch-related effects, but gestures still degraded reaction-related measures and vehicle-control stability compared with baseline driving.

That distinction matters: “better than touch” is not the same as “no safety cost.” Gesture input can remove the need to find and press a target on a display, while still taking attention, time, and control away from driving. The cited comparison does not establish that every physical control or speech system is safer in every circumstance; its results indicate that speech and physical controls can outperform gesture on some safety measures.

Interaction What the cited evidence indicates Evidence scope
Touchscreen Worst driving performance among touch, speech, gesture, and baseline in the cited comparison. 36 participants; 2023 simulator study reported by Elsevier.
Mid-air gesture Smaller effects than touchscreen interaction, but reaction-related and vehicle-control measures still worsened versus baseline. 36 participants; 2023 simulator study reported by Elsevier.
Speech and physical controls Could outperform gesture on some safety measures in the cited evidence; no universal ranking is established here. Compared in the same 2023 study; specific measure-by-measure values are not stated in the study summary.

There is also a difference between what drivers like and what they can safely do while driving. In a 2024 simulator study, participants rated gestures attractive, less demanding, and trustworthy. Those are useful measures of acceptance, but they do not cancel out measured performance costs found in other work. A system needs both favorable user experience and objective evidence about reaction time, vehicle control, glances, and workload.

Why does a car misunderstand hand gestures?

A gesture recognizer has to separate an intended command from ordinary movement in a changing scene. The driver may sit at a different distance or angle, move at a different speed, or use a smaller or wider gesture than the system expects. Lighting, clothing, cabin layout, and the road environment can also change what a sensor sees. DFKI described the challenge in 2023 as the combination of “limited and costly data” and a “dynamic, ever-changing” driving environment.

A model trained to expect one idealized motion can therefore mistake a deliberate command for incidental movement—or miss a valid command from a driver whose movements differ from its training examples. DFKI’s 2023 work describes personalizing recognition for individual users, with the aim of improving accuracy while reducing the amount of user-specific data needed.

What personalization should account for

  • The driver’s gesture range and execution speed.
  • Handedness and the driver’s position in the seat.
  • Differences in how people perform the same gesture, rather than a single assumed “correct” motion.

Personalization is not a substitute for robust testing. A recognizer still needs to work across users and conditions, and it must avoid treating every hand movement as an instruction. The system should make it easy to learn a small, distinct set of commands rather than asking drivers to remember a large vocabulary.

Can in-car gesture control reduce distraction?

It can reduce one kind of distraction: looking down to locate and operate a touchscreen. But a gesture still competes with driving for attention, and a driver may look toward the interface to check whether the command registered. Input and feedback therefore need to be designed together.

A 2024 Taylor & Francis simulator study involved 24 participants navigating 12 menu items with mid-air gestures while using either a head-up display (HUD) or a head-down display. The HUD combined with auditory “spearcons”—brief, compressed speech cues—improved measured situation awareness, workload, navigation performance, and usability compared with the head-down-display condition. This supports keeping confirmation in the driver’s forward view and, where appropriate, using sound so the driver does not need to look down to verify an action.

That result is a design direction, not proof that a HUD makes any gesture system safe. The study was a simulator experiment with a limited participant group; systems still need evaluation in the vehicles and conditions where they will be used.

What does the car need to know before accepting a gesture?

A reliable interface should treat gesture recognition as a decision about the driver and the driving situation, not as a hand-shape detector operating in isolation. A useful behavior layer would combine information about the individual, the vehicle, the road, and the current interaction demand. SAE’s 3D framework uses driver, vehicle, and environment information because driving behavior changes with context and state.

Driver and gesture

The system needs to account for the driver’s usual motion range, handedness, seating position, and gesture speed. It should also distinguish a trained command from a movement that only resembles one, and provide a clear way to cancel or correct an unintended action.

Driving context and workload

Speed, road situation, steering activity, and workload can change whether a gesture is appropriate. For example, a command might be deferred when the road demands more of the driver and accepted when conditions are less demanding. These are design examples, not a claim that current production systems consistently make such decisions.

Automation and readiness to resume control

Automation changes what the driver is doing and how quickly they may need to take control. In 2024, the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration studied secondary tasks, transfer of control, and training with 100 commercial drivers in simulated Level 2 and Level 3 systems. That work underscores why an interface should account for engagement and readiness during automation and handover, rather than assuming that a driver who can make a gesture is ready to respond to the road.

The action can be simple: accept the gesture, defer it, or reject it. The important requirement is that the system’s response reflect context and driver state, not just whether a sensor detected a plausible movement.

Which gestures and feedback are easier to use?

A small, clearly distinguishable gesture set is a better starting point than a large collection of commands. AutomotiveUI research identified pointing, crossed-arm warning poses, and waving as promising signals for direction and attention in simulated scenarios. These findings do not establish a universally safe production vocabulary; each command still needs testing for ambiguity, learnability, and unintended activation.

Feedback should tell the driver whether a command was recognized without drawing attention away from the road. HUD and auditory cues are promising options, as the 2024 simulator findings indicate, but the right combination depends on the task and vehicle. A system should avoid making drivers repeat a gesture or look down to diagnose a missed command while the vehicle is moving.

How should manufacturers validate a gesture system?

Preference scores alone are not enough. NHTSA’s driver-vehicle interface guidance says safe and efficient operation requires an interface designed consistently with driver limitations, capabilities, and expectations. Applied to gesture control, that means checking how the system behaves under realistic driving demands, not just whether participants say the gestures feel natural.

  • Driving performance: measure reaction time, time-to-collision, and lane or vehicle-control stability.
  • Attention and effort: assess glance behavior, workload, and situation awareness.
  • Recognition quality: test accuracy across drivers, gesture styles, seats, cabins, lighting, and other relevant conditions.
  • Human understanding: evaluate learnability, trust, confirmation, and recovery from an incorrect or missed recognition.
  • Automation transitions: examine secondary-task engagement and readiness to resume control during handover.

Gesture-specific studies cited here are mainly simulator-based, including experiments with 24 and 36 participants. They help identify design risks and promising approaches, but they do not establish how every production system performs in everyday traffic. Real-world validation still needs to cover varied populations, vehicle cabins, lighting, clothing, injuries, and left- and right-hand-drive layouts.
