Consumer Reports describes the 2024 Tucson as much more reliable than other vehicles from its model year, while calling the 2023 about average. The 2016–2021 third generation deserves the most caution, especially the 2016 and 2017 model years. The available evidence does not reliably separate the 2005–2009 first generation from the 2010–2015 second, so they share the middle tier.
This is a U.S. model-year ranking, not a guarantee about an individual SUV. A Tucson’s year, engine and transmission or hybrid setup, condition, maintenance history, mileage, and completed recalls all matter.

How the Tucson generations rank for reliability
| Rank | U.S. model years | Reliability assessment |
|---|---|---|
| 1, provisional | Fourth: 2022 onward | Best recent signal is for 2024; 2023 is described as about average. Evidence is not uniform across the generation. |
| 2–3, tied | First: 2005–2009 | No comparable generation-wide reliability rate is established. Recall counts alone do not settle the ranking. |
| 2–3, tied | Second: 2010–2015 | No comparable generation-wide reliability rate is established; year-level summaries are mixed. |
| 4, greatest caution | Third: 2016–2021 | 2016 and 2017 are the clearest caution years in the available survey summaries and complaint aggregation. |
The middle generations are tied because the available findings do not justify a confident order between them. Treat this ranking as a way to decide which model years to investigate first, not as a failure-rate comparison: the sources do not provide comparable, generation-wide Tucson rates.

Fourth generation: 2022 onward
The fourth generation leads on the strength of a specific year-level result, not a clean sweep. Consumer Reports characterizes the 2024 Tucson as much more reliable than other vehicles from that model year, but describes the 2023 as about average. Those assessments should not be generalized to every fourth-generation year, trim, or powertrain.

Newer vehicles also have less long-term ownership history than older ones, limiting what can be concluded about durability over time. J.D. Power gives the 2025 Tucson 83/100 for Quality & Reliability, but its page says it used prior-year ratings until new consumer-survey data for the current model year became available. That score is not a mature, fully observed 2025 ownership result.
First generation: 2005–2009
The first generation sits in the unresolved middle tier. Consumer Reports’ surfaced summaries report one NHTSA recall for the 2009 Tucson. That is a recall count, not a measure of how often vehicles fail or a basis for ranking the whole generation.

Second generation: 2010–2015
The second generation also remains in the middle tier. Consumer Reports’ surfaced summaries report four NHTSA recalls for 2010, but the difference between that count and the reported 2009 count does not establish which generation is more reliable; recall totals can change and are not reliability scores.
Year-level evidence is mixed for 2015: one Consumer Reports summary calls it about average for its peers, while a separate list of Tucson years rated much worse than average includes 2015. These summaries do not provide a comparable generation average, so they cannot support a firm verdict for the second generation as a whole.

Third generation: 2016–2021
This is the cohort to approach most carefully. Consumer Reports’ list of Tucson years rated worse than average includes 2016 and 2017. CarComplaints identifies 2016 as the year with the most complaints in its database and rates 2017 worse after considering factors that include repair cost and failures at lower mileage.
Complaint totals are not adjusted for how many vehicles were sold or how much they were driven, and a complaint does not prove that every Tucson of that year has the same problem. The agreement between the survey summaries and complaint aggregation makes 2016–2017 useful warning flags—not automatic reasons to reject every example.

What the reliability evidence can—and cannot—tell you
Owner surveys and trouble areas
Consumer Reports says its reliability-history charts draw on its latest subscriber survey covering about 380,000 vehicles across makes and models—not Tucson owners alone. The charts track 20 potential trouble spots, from engines and transmissions to brakes, electrical accessories, and EV charging. The surfaced Tucson summaries provide directional year-level descriptions rather than numerical scores that can be averaged across generations.

Scores and complaint counts are different measures
J.D. Power’s 2025 Quality & Reliability score is a consumer rating, with the prior-year carry-forward qualification noted above. CarComplaints aggregates owner complaints, but its counts are not exposure-adjusted. These measures answer different questions; combining them into a single precise reliability score would imply more certainty than the evidence supports.

Generation labels vary by source and market
The model-year groupings in this article are shopper-facing U.S. cohorts: 2005–2009, 2010–2015, 2016–2021, and 2022 onward. Government documents may use internal codes and spans that differ or overlap. For example, an NHTSA Hyundai/Kia investigation lists Tucson codes TG for 2005–2011, AD for 2016–2020, and SK3 for 2019–2022. Those code ranges serve the document’s purpose; they are not a replacement for these U.S. shopping cohorts.
Which Tucson years should you be most cautious about?
Start with 2016 and 2017, the clearest caution years in the third generation. That signal is not proof that every example is unreliable. A well-documented, well-maintained vehicle with a clean inspection may be a better prospect than a neglected Tucson from a year with a stronger average signal.
Do not interpret a recall count as a reliability ranking. Consumer Reports’ 2026 Tucson page lists five NHTSA recalls and describes an instrument-panel software recall affecting certain 2025–2026 vehicles. Whether a recall applies—and whether its remedy has been completed—depends on the specific vehicle. Check the VIN with NHTSA and confirm the repair documentation with the seller or dealer.

How to compare two used Tucsons
- Compare exact model years and powertrains. Do not stop at the generation label; identify the engine, transmission, and whether the vehicle is a hybrid or another variant.
- Review maintenance and repair records. Look for dated documentation that matches the vehicle’s mileage and stated service history, and ask about unresolved symptoms or repeat repairs.
- Check recalls by VIN. Confirm which campaigns apply and whether the required remedy is recorded as complete; a generation-wide recall count cannot answer that for a particular car.
- Arrange an independent pre-purchase inspection. Have a qualified mechanic assess the vehicle’s actual condition and investigate any warning lights, noises, leaks, shifting concerns, or other symptoms before purchase.
- Weigh the car’s evidence over the ranking. Use the generation and year as screening clues, then judge the specific vehicle on its condition, records, mileage, powertrain, and inspection findings.
