Hyundai Motor India said it planned to roll out two new models from its Chennai facility in 2026, including its first mass-market dedicated electric vehicle. The announcement pairs a vehicle launch plan with a broader supply-chain push: the company reported 82% localisation across its EV and petrol/diesel manufacturing operations and set a 90% target for the next five to six years. That is separate from Hyundai Motor Company’s later goal to source 90% of vehicle content from India by 2030.
What Hyundai announced for Chennai
On June 4, 2026, Hyundai Motor India Limited (HMIL) named Tamil Nadu its “Flagship EV Hub for India” and said two new models would roll out from its Chennai facility within the year. One was to be HMIL’s first mass-market dedicated EV. The announcement described future plans, not confirmation that either vehicle had launched.

On July 30, 2026, HMIL managing director and CEO Tarun Garg said both models would be available in the second half of the year, with one expected during the festive season. He did not provide an exact launch date. Hyundai Motor Company’s August 26 investor-day release separately said an all-new electric SUV for India was planned for Q4 2026. It described that SUV as localised and designed for India, with next-generation infotainment and Level 2 assisted-driving technology. The available announcements do not establish whether that SUV is one of the two models in HMIL’s June plan, so the plans should not be treated as a confirmed model-by-model match.
Two separate 90% targets
The two 90% figures refer to different measures and statements. HMIL’s June 2026 target covers localisation across its EV and internal-combustion-engine manufacturing operations. Hyundai Motor Company’s August 2026 target concerns the share of vehicle content it aims to source from India. They have different scopes and timelines; neither announcement says the measures are interchangeable.

HMIL’s June 2026 announcement reported 39 charging stations and 78 charging points in Tamil Nadu. On the July 2026 earnings call, Garg said the MyHyundai app provided access to 30,000 charging points. These figures describe different things: the first is a Tamil Nadu count of stations and points reported by HMIL; the second is a broader app-access figure. The call does not establish that all 30,000 points are owned or operated by Hyundai, or that they are all in Tamil Nadu.

How to read the announcements
- Launch status: The two-model rollout and dedicated-EV timing were plans stated in 2026 announcements; those statements alone do not confirm a completed launch.
- Localisation: HMIL’s 82% figure and five-to-six-year target concern EV and ICE manufacturing operations. The group’s 2030 sourcing target is a separate measure.
- Local industrial impact: The supplier-purchasing, job and investment figures are forward-looking company statements.
- Charging: A count of points available through an app should not be confused with a count of company-owned chargers or a state-specific network.
