Hyundai’s three-row electric SUV is officially named IONIQ 9, not IONIQ 7. Hyundai announced the IONIQ 9 in November 2024; this comparison assumes that is the Hyundai model intended by “Hyundai Ioniq 7 vs Kia EV9.” The figures below compare Hyundai’s European-market IONIQ 9 specifications with Kia’s 2026 U.S.-market EV9 information, so they are not a direct, same-market matchup.
Which versions are being compared?
The available specifications cover different markets and model-year contexts: Hyundai’s figures are from its European technical pages, while Kia’s are for the 2026 EV9 in the United States. Europe’s WLTP range and the U.S. EPA estimates use different test procedures. Prices, trims, equipment and availability also vary by region, so these figures help explain each vehicle but do not establish which is better in a single local showroom.
Hyundai’s 2024 announcement described projected IONIQ 9 figures, including 620 km WLTP and 335 miles EPA for a specified long-range rear-wheel-drive configuration. Those were announcement-stage projections, not a substitute for current market specifications. For the comparison below, Hyundai’s current European technical data is the more relevant basis. Hyundai’s IONIQ 9 announcement also notes that specifications may differ by region and change.
Range, battery and charging
Hyundai Europe lists the IONIQ 9 with a 110 kWh battery and three powertrain configurations: rear-wheel drive, all-wheel drive and Performance all-wheel drive. Its stated range is 600–620 km under WLTP. Kia America lists EPA estimates for selected 2026 EV9 trims, from 230 miles for the 76.1 kWh Light RWD to 305 miles for the 99.8 kWh Light Long Range RWD. Because the test cycles and markets differ, those figures should not be read as evidence that one vehicle travels farther than the other.

| Specification | Hyundai IONIQ 9 | Kia EV9 |
|---|---|---|
| Market and data context | Europe; manufacturer technical data | United States; 2026 model information |
| Battery | 110 kWh listed by Hyundai Europe | 76.1 kWh Light RWD; 99.8 kWh Light Long Range RWD, per Kia America |
| Published range | 600–620 km WLTP, depending on configuration | 230 miles EPA for Light RWD; 305 miles EPA for Light Long Range RWD |
| Maximum DC charging power | 230 kW listed by Hyundai Europe | Kia’s cited 2026 page describes 800V architecture and a NACS port; a maximum DC charging power figure is not stated there |
| 10–80% charging claim | About 24 minutes with a 350 kW charger, according to Hyundai Europe | 24 minutes for specifically listed configurations in Kia’s 2026 brochure |
The IONIQ 9’s 24-minute estimate does not mean it charges continuously at 350 kW: Hyundai lists the vehicle’s maximum DC charging power as 230 kW. Charging time depends on conditions, and the Kia brochure’s 24-minute claim applies only to the configurations identified there. Check the current specification sheet for the exact trim you are considering.
Both makers’ range figures are estimates, not promises of everyday driving distance. Temperature, speed, route, vehicle setup, load and battery condition can change actual range. Kia specifically warns that towing can significantly reduce EV9 range.

Seating and family use
Hyundai Europe says the IONIQ 9 is offered with six or seven seats. Kia’s U.S. EV9 accommodates up to seven passengers, with six-seat layouts featuring second-row captain’s chairs available on some configurations. Seat count alone does not establish which SUV has more usable third-row space or makes access easier; confirm the precise layout and try the seats with the passengers and child seats you expect to carry.
Cargo space: compare the measurement carefully
Hyundai Europe lists 338 litres behind the third row, 908 litres with the third row folded, and 2,419 litres with both the second and third rows folded. Kia’s 2026 U.S. brochure gives EV9 volumes of 20.2 cubic feet behind the third row, 43.5 cubic feet behind the second, and 81.7 cubic feet behind the first. These figures use different units and may use different measurement conventions, so they are not a clean like-for-like ranking. Check the usable space in person with your typical luggage, stroller or other bulky items.

Towing and vehicle dimensions
Hyundai Europe lists braked towing capacity of 1,600 kg for the IONIQ 9 RWD and 2,500 kg for AWD configurations. Kia’s 2026 U.S. brochure states a maximum EV9 towing capacity of 5,000 lb with required equipment. The headline capacities are not directly comparable across markets, configurations and equipment. Kia cautions that towing can substantially reduce range; verify the exact vehicle’s rating, required equipment, and local towing rules before hauling a trailer.
Hyundai Europe lists the IONIQ 9 at 5,060 mm long, with a 3,130 mm wheelbase. The cited Kia materials do not provide a matching set of dimensions for this comparison, so no direct size advantage can be established from these figures alone.

Price and equipment depend on where you buy
Kia America lists a 2026 EV9 starting MSRP of $54,900, excluding destination and other charges. That is a U.S. starting price, not a like-for-like comparison with a European IONIQ 9 price; the cited Hyundai European pages do not state a comparable price. Local taxes, fees, incentives and trim availability can change the amount a buyer pays. Kia says prices, specifications, features and availability may change, so confirm the current offer with a local dealer.
For either SUV, compare the exact trim’s equipment and warranty in your market rather than relying on model-level headlines. Hyundai’s trim and accessories listings are regional, and the cited information does not establish a complete, directly comparable warranty or service-coverage picture.

Home charging: match the equipment to your market
A Level 2 EV charger can be useful for overnight home charging, but the suitable unit depends on your region’s connector standard, each vehicle’s onboard AC charging limit and the capacity of your household electrical installation. Have installation requirements assessed locally and check the exact vehicle and charger specifications; neither cited source establishes that a particular charger is compatible with every market or trim.
Quick Recap
How to choose between the intended Hyundai and Kia
- Start with local availability: compare IONIQ 9 and EV9 trims actually offered in your country and model year.
- Compare like with like: match drivetrain, battery, seat layout, wheels and equipment before weighing range or price.
- Use the same range standard: look for estimates certified under the same test cycle for your market; do not equate WLTP kilometres with EPA miles.
- Test the family fit: check third-row access, child-seat placement and cargo space in the seating configuration you will use.
- Calculate the real ownership setup: include local pricing and fees, home charging installation, towing needs and the range impact of your typical load.
