The KONA Electric range then started at AUD 46,000 before on-road costs, according to CarExpert’s report dated June 5, 2026. A separate Australian price-cut story later covered the 2027 Inster; it is not the same announcement.
Which Hyundai EV got cheaper in Australia?
The June 2026 reductions applied to the KONA Electric and IONIQ 5 lineups, excluding the IONIQ 5 N. CarExpert reported an AUD 8,000 cut for each and a new KONA Electric starting price of AUD 46,000 before on-road costs. The report quoted an unnamed Hyundai Australia spokesperson: “We are responding to an extremely price-competitive EV market – it’s that simple.” That is the company’s explanation, not independent evidence establishing the cause of the reductions.

The headline’s “cheapest EV” wording needs a market and date. Hyundai’s prices vary by country, and later Australian coverage describes a different price change involving the Inster.
How much did the KONA Electric price fall?
CarExpert’s June 5, 2026 report put the reduction at AUD 8,000 and the KONA Electric range’s new starting price at AUD 46,000 before on-road costs. Because that figure excludes on-road costs, it is not a drive-away price: the amount payable can differ once applicable charges are added. Check the current price and terms with Hyundai Australia or an authorized dealer before relying on the reported figure.

Is the 2027 Hyundai Inster the same price-cut story?
No. CarExpert’s October 2026 coverage reported a separate cut for the 2027 Inster and described its Essential variant as Australia’s equal-cheapest new car at the promotional price. The report’s surfaced details give a claimed 220 km WLTP range, but do not establish the exact offer price or how long it lasts. Those details are therefore not enough to compare the Inster’s offer with the KONA Electric’s June starting price.
The two announcements should not be combined: they concern different models and dates, and the available Inster offer details do not establish a directly comparable price basis.

How do Hyundai’s price cuts differ by country?
Hyundai Denmark announced cuts effective March 2, 2026, to the KONA Electric, IONIQ 5 and IONIQ 9. The Danish release says the KONA Electric Essential Standard Range, with a 48.4 kWh battery and up to 377 km of stated range, starts at DKK 219,995, down from DKK 234,995—a DKK 15,000 reduction. These are Danish prices and specifications, not Australian figures.
That country-specific announcement illustrates why a Hyundai EV price cannot be quoted meaningfully without identifying the market. Currency, trim, local taxes and price conventions differ; do not treat a price from one country as a price available in another.
