Hyundai Motor Group completed its acquisition of a controlling interest in Boston Dynamics in 2021, at a reported company valuation of US$1.1 billion. The deal gave Hyundai an 80% stake, with a SoftBank affiliate retaining 20%. The next step is not simply more robot sales: Hyundai is connecting Boston Dynamics’ robots to its manufacturing and logistics operations, with Atlas targeted for sequencing work at Hyundai Motor Group Metaplant America by 2028. Hyundai’s July 2026 statement said a proposed purchase of SoftBank’s stake was still under shareholder review, not completed.
What Hyundai bought—and what it paid
Hyundai Motor Group announced the acquisition’s completion on June 21, 2021. It acquired a controlling interest in Boston Dynamics at a reported company valuation of US$1.1 billion. Hyundai did not disclose further financial details, so that figure is the reported valuation, not a confirmed cash purchase price. Hyundai’s closing announcement said Hyundai held 80% after closing and a SoftBank affiliate retained 20%.
Hyundai framed the deal as part of its ambition to become a “Smart Mobility Solution Provider.” Its stated goal was to combine Boston Dynamics’ robotics expertise with Hyundai’s capabilities in manufacturing, logistics, construction and automation, building a value chain from robot components to smart logistics. That was the company’s rationale for the acquisition, not a claim that the entire value chain was already in place.
What Boston Dynamics brought to the group
Boston Dynamics was not just a bet on a future humanoid robot. At the time of the acquisition, its portfolio included products and technologies aimed at industrial and logistics work. The products differ in intended use and commercial maturity:

The difference matters: Spot and Stretch provided a commercial industrial footing, while Atlas represents a more ambitious manufacturing bet. Their settings and tasks are not interchangeable, and the planned Atlas deployment should not be read as proof that humanoid robots are already performing routine factory work.
What Hyundai plans to do with Atlas
At CES on January 5, 2026, Hyundai announced a Group-level AI Robotics strategy and a product version of Atlas. The company said it plans to introduce Atlas for sequencing tasks at Hyundai Motor Group Metaplant America by 2028, starting in manufacturing. Hyundai’s broader plan is to connect Boston Dynamics’ robotics with the group’s manufacturing and logistics capabilities and with a collaboration involving Google DeepMind.

“By combining capabilities of Boston Dynamics and Google DeepMind through this strategic partnership, we are taking a significant step toward redefining the future paradigm of the industry,” said Zachary Jackowski, Boston Dynamics’ vice president and general manager of Atlas, in Hyundai’s CES announcement. That is a statement of strategic ambition; the announced 2028 target remains a plan rather than a completed deployment.
Hyundai has also described Atlas demonstrations involving mobility, whole-body coordination, object manipulation, delivery of the ceremonial match ball at a 2026 FIFA World Cup match, and lifting and transporting a 23-kilogram compact refrigerator. Hyundai characterized the demonstrations as supporting validation for potential industrial applications. Demonstrations show capabilities in specific settings; on their own, they do not establish sustained production performance.

Does Hyundai own all of Boston Dynamics now?
No completed full buyout is established by Hyundai’s latest ownership statement in this account. On July 16, 2026, Hyundai said that, following SoftBank’s notice of exercise of its put option, relevant shareholders were reviewing their contractual rights and obligations through internal governance and approval processes. The statement described the contemplated transaction as expected to support collaboration, but did not say the purchase had closed. The ownership figures announced at the 2021 closing therefore remain the last confirmed structure here: 80% Hyundai and 20% a SoftBank affiliate. Hyundai’s July 2026 statement is the relevant update.
