The five award-winning models were the Hyundai Santa Cruz, Sonata and Venue, plus the Kia Carnival and K4. The results recognize early ownership quality in each model’s segment—not a group-wide victory or a long-term reliability guarantee.
Which Hyundai and Kia models won 2025 awards?
J.D. Power named these five Hyundai Motor Group models as the highest-ranked in their respective segments in the 2025 U.S. Initial Quality Study:
- Hyundai Santa Cruz
- Hyundai Sonata
- Hyundai Venue
- Kia Carnival
- Kia K4
The awards are segment-specific. They do not establish that one of these vehicles is better than the others overall, particularly because they serve different needs and are not direct substitutes. The 2025 results are listed in J.D. Power’s 2025 U.S. Initial Quality Study release.
How did Hyundai Motor Group compare with other automakers?
By model-level segment awards, BMW AG led the 2025 study with six, while Hyundai Motor Group had five. The phrase “dominates” therefore overstates the result if it means HMG won the most awards. HMG was among the top recipients, but not the leader.

The year-over-year record is also more nuanced than “dominates again.” In the 2024 U.S. Initial Quality Study, HMG received four model-level awards and General Motors Company led with six. In 2025, HMG rose to five while BMW AG led with six. These counts describe award-winning models, not an overall brand score. See the 2024 study release for the prior-year figures.
What does the Initial Quality Study measure?
J.D. Power describes the U.S. Initial Quality Study as measuring owner-reported problems during the first 90 days of ownership. It combines customer feedback with verified dealership repair-order data and reports problems per 100 vehicles (PP100). A lower PP100 means fewer reported problems. The study covers areas including mechanical systems, design execution, infotainment, driver-assistance systems and emerging technologies. J.D. Power’s IQS description summarizes the measure as problems reported after 90 days.

Do these awards prove long-term reliability?
No. The IQS is an early-ownership measure, so its awards alone cannot establish how a vehicle will hold up over several years, its lifetime repair costs, resale value or the quality of every model from the same corporate group. J.D. Power also cautions in the 2025 release that rankings based on numerical scores are not necessarily statistically significant. Treat the award as one useful early-quality indicator, not a prediction of an individual vehicle’s long-term ownership experience.
Are these still the latest J.D. Power results?
No. The 2025 ranking is a historical edition. In J.D. Power’s later 2026 U.S. Initial Quality Study, BMW AG again had six model-level awards and Hyundai Motor Group had five. The 2026 release lists the same five HMG models: Santa Cruz, Sonata, Venue, Carnival and K4. See the 2026 study release for the later results.

How should shoppers use the results?
Start by comparing vehicles that fit the same segment and intended use. Then weigh the factors that matter to your purchase—such as price, powertrain, size, features, ownership costs and warranty. The IQS award information identifies segment winners, but it does not provide those shopping specifications or determine which of the five is the right choice for a particular buyer.
