In most dual-clutch cars, leave the selector in Drive for ordinary automatic shifting. When you want a different gear, pull + to request an upshift or − to request a downshift. The transmission—not the paddle—decides whether the requested gear is safe and may continue shifting automatically to protect the engine.
What the paddles do in a DCT
Paddle shifters send electronic gear-change requests to the transmission. They are not a separate clutch pedal, and a paddle pull does not guarantee that the car will select any gear at any speed. In the Hyundai examples, each pull requests a change by one gear; the controller can refuse a request that would put engine speed outside its allowable range. It may also downshift as the car slows or upshift as engine speed nears the red zone. Hyundai’s 2025 Elantra owner’s manual describes those safeguards for that vehicle.
How to use the paddles
- Stay in Drive for normal use. In the representative Hyundai examples, the paddles can be used while the selector is in D, but exact operation depends on the vehicle.
- Pull + to request a higher gear when you want the transmission to shift up. Pull − to request a lower gear when a lower gear is useful.
- Make downshifts gradually and at a suitable speed. The car can reject a request if the resulting engine speed would exceed its allowed range. There is no universal RPM target for every DCT.
- Check the instrument display to confirm the selected gear or mode, and keep your attention on the road.
- Return to automatic shifting using your car’s specified method. Depending on the vehicle, that may mean selecting D or allowing a temporary manual mode to time out.
What changes from one DCT to another
Paddle behavior is model-specific: paddles may work in Drive, in a separate manual or sport gate, or in more than one mode. A paddle pull may temporarily override automatic shifting, or it may put the transmission into a manual mode that lasts until you take a particular action. The return-to-automatic method and protective automatic shifts also vary. Check the owner’s manual for your exact model year before relying on a particular sequence.
Example: 2026 Hyundai LX3
The 2026 Hyundai LX3 owner’s manual says the paddles operate in D and that one pull enters manual mode. For that model, automatic mode resumes if the driver holds +, selects D, does not press the accelerator for more than six seconds while driving, or slows below 1 mph (2 km/h). These are vehicle-specific rules, not general DCT settings.

When a lower gear can help—and when not to use it
On a descent
A lower gear can help control speed on a downhill stretch and reduce reliance on frequent braking. Slow down before shifting lower, make changes progressively, and continue to use the service brakes as needed; engine braking is not a substitute for them. Hyundai’s LX3 manual describes using a lower gear to help control speed on a descent, while a separate Hyundai manual advises slowing before a paddle downshift.
On slippery roads
Do not use engine braking on slippery roads: the vehicle may lose traction. Follow the owner’s manual and adjust speed smoothly for the conditions.

A note on low-speed DCT behavior
Some dual-clutch transmissions can feel less smooth during launch or at very low speeds because they operate like an automatically shifted manual transmission. That characteristic is described in the cited 2025 Elantra manual; it should not be assumed to describe every DCT. The same manual cautions against selecting Reverse before the vehicle has come to a complete stop.

Before using paddles, find the section on paddle shifters or manual mode in the owner’s manual for your make, model and year. Confirm which selector position enables the paddles, how the display indicates the selected gear, how manual mode ends, and what transmission limits apply. Do not assume another car’s timeout, speed threshold or button sequence applies to yours.
